Cushions for Mountain West cabins and lodges

Up high the air is dry, the sun is sharp and the stove hardly ever goes out. A cabin cushion has to live with all three and still be sitting there next winter.

The quick answer

Mountain West cabin cushions work best in warm corduroy or velvet by the fire, tough pet-friendly fabric by the door, and outdoor fabric on the porch that comes indoors before the first snow. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 ft (91 cm) from the woodstove. Where doors and ladders are tight, a frameless floor sofa that arrives in pieces beats a framed couch.

High, dry and bright: what mountain weather does to a cushion

The sun up high works harder than folks expect. The World Health Organization puts it at about 10% more UV for every 3,281 ft (1,000 m) of elevation, and fresh snow almost doubles the exposure. Cushions by a bright window that faces a snowfield fade even indoors.

The air is dry. Salt Lake City's July afternoons average about 21% humidity. Mildew seldom takes hold, but dust and static do, and firm, stable foam keeps its shape.

Winters run long, cushions live close to the stove, and some late summers bring wildfire smoke. So pick the cloth for the seat: corduroy and velvet by the fire, a pet-friendly performance weave by the door, and a proper winter storage plan for the porch. Buy the cushion once, cry once.

Log walls, bunk rooms and the bench by the door

Cabins out here run from log and timber-frame lodges to A-frames, ski condos, bunkhouses and tiny cabins in the woods. The seats repeat themselves: a bunk room, a window seat facing the mountains, floor seating by the woodstove, and a mudroom bench that takes ski boots, snowmelt and dogs.

Floor cushions and modular floor sofas earn their keep here, with no frame to wrestle up a ladder. A buyer in the US planning a retreat room wanted seven to ten floor cushions at 24 x 40 in (61 x 102 cm) and decided to order one first to check the quality. That is how I would do it too, my friend.

Another buyer, in a tiny cabin with cedar walls and a yellow carpet, asked to see three grays side by side, because the windows threw green light across the room. Judge swatches in that room, not on a screen. Then let the seat height calculator and the foam firmness finder settle height and firmness.

How far is your woodstove from the spot where everybody drops to the floor?

Picked for the Mountain West

A real project

The tiny house that needed a sofa under 30 inches

A parent in the US wrote to the workshop about a tiny house on wheels. They needed a frameless floor sofa about 77 in (196 cm) wide and no taller than 30 in (76 cm), and they hoped for cotton.

The workshop pointed them to the modular corduroy floor sofa: 78.5 in (200 cm) wide, 29 in (74 cm) high and 39 in (100 cm) deep, with a 14 in (36 cm) seat. No legs, just cushion and cloth. The workshop sent the numbers first, so the family could check the space before ordering.

An inch to spare does not sound like much. In a tiny house it is the whole argument.

Measured
78.5 in W x 29 in H x 39 in D (200 x 74 x 100 cm); 14 in (36 cm) seat height
What it taught
In tiny spaces, check overall height and opened length before choosing a floor sofa.

A cabin year for cushions

  • Before the first snow: bring porch cushions in and store them dry, off concrete and out of sealed plastic.
  • All winter: keep floor cushions, bench cushions and throws 3 ft (91 cm) from the woodstove.
  • Bright snowy weeks: rotate window seat cushions that face a snowfield.
  • Mud season: wash the mudroom bench cover at 86°F (30°C) and air dry.
  • Smoke days in late summer: bring cushions in when ash is forecast, then wash the covers.

A fireside floor cushion belongs at least 3 feet from the woodstove. Let the corduroy hold the warmth and let the stove keep its distance.

Buyer questions: cabin questions

  1. A common question

My dogs jump on everything. Which cushion fabric will stand up to them?

    The workshop's answer

Not linen; it is a natural-look fabric, not a performance one. The pet-friendly performance collection holds up much better against claws, jumping and daily wear, and it cleans more easily. For an entry bench where big dogs pass all day, outdoor fabric is the most rugged pick.

  2. A common question

Is a corduroy floor sofa a good idea with a cat and a dog, and will the hair stick?

    The workshop's answer

The corduroy is a dense, durable pile, though no fabric is claw-proof, and the covers come off for the washing machine. Pet hair does cling to corduroy, though. If that bothers you, the sofa covers can be made in faux leather instead.

  3. A common question

Will a modular floor sofa fit through a narrow cabin door, and does it come with the support pieces?

    The workshop's answer

Yes to both. The sofa comes in separate pieces, so it fits through a normal door. The metal support bars are included and hold the backrests and armrests; a single sofa comes with 2 armrests, 2 seat cushions and 4 bars.

  4. A common question

Is velvet sensible in a house with cats, dogs and small children?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The velvet's tight weave resists snagging from claws, spills spot-clean easily, and the covers machine wash at 86°F (30°C). For a house with pets and small children, the workshop recommends it over linen.

More cabin questions, answered plain

How close can cushions sit to a woodstove in a cabin?

The National Fire Protection Association advises keeping anything that can burn at least 3 ft (91 cm) from heating equipment. Size fireside floor cushions and bench runs so they sit outside that circle, throws and pillows included.

Why do cushions fade faster in a mountain cabin?

UV rises about 10% for every 3,281 ft (1,000 m) of altitude, according to the WHO, and fresh snow almost doubles the exposure. A window seat facing a snowy slope takes a lot of light, so rotate the cushions through the winter.

Can outdoor cushions stay on a cabin porch through the winter?

Better not. The outdoor line is a UV-resistant, water-repellent polyester, but quick-dry foam isn't standard, and water trapped in foam freezes and thaws. Store porch cushions dry and off concrete until spring.

How thick should a camper or bunk cushion be?

Measure the headroom first. A buyer in the US ordering two 71 x 28 in (180 x 71 cm) cushions for a camper top bunk was told the pictured cushion stood 12 in (30 cm) thick. Sit up in the bunk and measure before choosing.

Sit well. — Harlan
