Meditation corners: firm, flat floor cushions matched to the rug

Long sitting asks for less cushion, not more. Eight quiet corners from past orders, and what each one said about height, fill and the rug underneath.

A large mustard floor cushion serves as a seat for people and a bed for the dog. Its pet-friendly weave handles both.

The quick answer

A meditation floor cushion should be firm and flat: about 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) thick and densely filled. Size it to the sitter, from 18 x 18 in (46 x 46 cm) for one person to 24 x 40 in (61 x 102 cm) for a longer mat. Tufted fiber fill rates about 6 to 7 out of 10. Take the color from the rug.

Firm, flat, and close to the floor

Plush is the wrong word for a meditation corner. A soft cushion feels kind for ten minutes. By minute forty the hips have sunk and the back is doing all the work.

A meditation floor cushion should stay flat under weight. The tufted floor cushions we read most are about 4 in (10 cm) thick, packed tight with cluster fiber, no foam core. The workshop rates them about 6 to 7 on a scale where 1 is very plush and 10 is a firm bed.

Height is a feeling. Some sitters want less lift and ask for 3 in (7.5 cm) of firm foam. Others sit for hours and want more. The foam firmness finder puts a number on it before anything is cut.

Then the rug. The cushion lives on the rug, not beside the sofa. Most of these corners chose linen or cotton-linen, a few velvet.

Eight corners follow, with their real inches. What sits under yours: a rug, bare boards, or a bench?

Eight quiet corners, measured

  1. 01A past project

An 18 x 18 in meditation cushion chosen for the rug

One buyer wrote in about an 18 x 18 in (46 x 46 cm) meditation cushion to sit with a new rug and a gray sofa. The workshop sent anthracite, beige and mint samples and explained the tufted version: durable fiber inserts, no foam, and bound tufting so the buttons cannot be felt. The buyer then asked for something flatter, about 3 in (7.5 cm) high in durable foam, in light green.

The takeaway: For long cross-legged sitting, go firm and flat, and judge the color against the rug.

  2. 02A past project

Seven to ten retreat cushions, and one ordered first

A retreat owner in the US planned seven to ten 24 x 40 in (61 x 102 cm) floor cushions for a farm meditation room, plus more 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) squares. They asked about cotton velvet, teddy and swatches, and learned teddy costs more than velvet or soft fabric. The plan: order one cushion first and check its quality before the rest.

The takeaway: A swatch shows color; only a finished cushion shows firmness.

  3. 03A past project

A seat and a backrest on a 20 in deep bench

A buyer in the US with a 20 in (51 cm) deep bench needed 24 in (61 cm) of total depth, and asked whether the listed 24 in counted the backrest. It did: a 20 x 32 x 4 in (51 x 81 x 10 cm) seat plus a separate 16 x 32 x 4 in (41 x 81 x 10 cm) backrest, and 20 plus 4 makes 24. On arrival the seat measured 19 in and the backrest 15 in, with one underfilled spot, and the buyer sent photos right away.

The takeaway: Total depth is seat depth plus backrest thickness. Measure the day the box opens.

  4. 04A past project

Hours of reading on the floor, and a filling tuned for it

A buyer wrote to the workshop about floor seating for long reading sessions: the tufted linen cushion, but thicker, soft to the touch yet firm enough to sit on for hours without sinking. The workshop said the standard is about 4 in (10 cm), it can be made higher, and dense filling takes years to flatten. Then it worked out a filling for that soft-but-supportive feel.

The takeaway: Describe how long the sitting lasts and how it should feel, not only the size.

  5. 05A past project

An outdoor floor seat that kept its edge without tufting

A buyer asked for an outdoor floor cushion, 32 1/4 x 44 in (82 x 112 cm), in white outdoor acrylic with the zipper on the 44 in side. A zippered outdoor version is not tufted, and the buyer worried it would look plain. They sent a photo of French seams and detailed sides, and the workshop confirmed it could copy that edge.

The takeaway: When tufting is off the table, send a photo of the edge you want.

  6. 06A past project

A 28 x 40 in floor cushion filled with cotton

A household avoiding polyester asked for floor cushions with no polyester fill. The workshop confirmed seat, backrest and pillows could all be cotton-filled, and sent a custom link for a 28 x 40 in (71 x 102 cm) cushion in linen color 24. From the outside, it said, a cotton-filled one looks the same.

The takeaway: If the cover must be polyester-free too, ask for its exact fiber content.

  7. 07A past project

Two square floor cushions in pure linen

A buyer in the US who reacts to synthetic fabrics wanted a medium or dark blue, but the suggested linen, number 38, looked too faded to them. They ordered two square floor cushions in anthracite, with color 28 dark gray as the fallback. The covers had to be pure linen, and the workshop confirmed it.

The takeaway: For an allergy, confirm the fiber by message and ask for photos of made-up cushions, not only swatch numbers.

  8. 08A past project

    A patterned rug from a trip, and a 20 x 44 in cushion

A buyer got in touch about matching a patterned rug brought home from a trip, leaning toward gray or smoke, in a 20 x 44 in (51 x 112 cm) size. They asked if cover and fill could both be 100% linen. A pure cover comes from the separate 100% linen chart; cotton is the natural fill the workshop has made on request.

The takeaway: Take the color from the rug's background, not its loudest thread.

Tufted, foam or cotton: how each one sits

Four builds came up again and again. None is wrong; each asks something different of the sitter and the washing machine.

What the word linen means on a chart

Most quiet corners ask for linen. The word needs checking. The standard linen charts are mostly blends or linen-look weaves, some all polyester, some half linen. Pure linen lives on a separate chart, sent on request, beside the 100% cotton fabrics.

A buyer in the US once asked for linen or a natural linen-cotton blend and received a well-made cushion in a synthetic blend. The workshop apologized and offered a remake in a natural fabric. When fiber matters, get the composition in writing and hold a swatch first.

Real linen vs linen-look reads the labels. Zabuton and meditation cushion sizes covers proportion. For a quarter-round seat, see corner reading nook floor cushions.

Firm under the hips. Flat on the rug. Quiet in color.

A meditation floor cushion should be firm and flat: about 4 in (10 cm) of dense fill, near 6 to 7 out of 10, with its color taken from the rug.

Quiet-corner questions

  1. A common question

What is actually inside a tufted floor cushion? Is there foam?

    The workshop's answer

No foam core. Tufted and French-style floor cushions are packed densely with silicone-ball fiber: polyester hollow fiber rolled into small clusters that feel soft like cotton, not like foam. The standard mix often includes some cotton filler, the cushions are sewn by hand, and the workshop can send a photo of the filling before you order. Foam fill is available as an alternative on some orders.

  2. A common question

If I pick a linen color, is the fabric 100% linen?

    The workshop's answer

Usually not. The standard linen charts are blends or linen-look fabrics: the linen-look codes are polyester, the natural linen chart is described as 50% linen and 50% polyester, and another range is 50% cotton and 50% linen. They are used because they are durable and easy to clean. For pure fiber, ask for the separate 100% linen chart or the 100% cotton fabrics.

  3. A common question

Will a tufted floor cushion stay firm enough to sit on for a long time?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, it is firm: about 6 to 7 on a scale where 1 is very plush and 10 is a firm bed you barely sink into. There is no sponge inside; the tightly packed fiber feels soft to the touch but holds its shape through long daily use. Because it is so densely filled it is heavy, and for more support you can ask for extra filling or a thicker cushion.

  4. A common question

How thick is a standard floor cushion, and can it be made thinner?

    The workshop's answer

The standard tufted linen floor cushion is about 4 in (10 cm) thick, and some listings run 4 to 5 in (10 to 12 cm). The velvet floor seat is about 6 in (15 cm). Any thickness can be made to order: thinner, such as 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm), which also lowers the price, or thicker. The dense fill takes years to flatten.

Questions buyers ask next

What size meditation floor cushion works for one person?

In these sketches, a single sitter's cushion ran 18 x 18 in (46 x 46 cm), and a retreat planned 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) squares alongside 24 x 40 in (61 x 102 cm) mats. Thickness sat between 3 and 4 in (7.5 and 10 cm), firm rather than plush.

Can a meditation cushion go in the washing machine?

Only an untufted one. Tufted cushions cannot be machine washed and should be wiped gently, because the tufting holds cover and fill together. An untufted cushion can have a removable zippered cover that goes in the machine, which suits a corner shared with children.

Can the filling be natural instead of polyester?

Yes, on a custom order. Seat, backrest and pillows have been made cotton-filled, and from outside the cushion looks the same. Natural fill costs more and feels different from polyester fiber clusters, so decide the fill and the thickness together.

Why does a floor seat with a backrest need more depth than the seat size?

The backrest stands in front of the wall and adds its own thickness. A 20 x 32 in (51 x 81 cm) seat with a 4 in (10 cm) backrest needs 24 in (61 cm) of depth. One such set arrived about an inch short, so leave a little margin.
