Pillow cover studio: see the color sit down before you do

My friends, choose a size, an edge and a cloth, and watch the pillow settle into a sofa corner in the light of your screen — then take the cut list, not the screen, to your maker.

The quick answer

Pick a size — 16, 18 or 20 in square throws, a 12 × 20 or 14 × 36 in lumbar, or an 8 × 20 in bolster — then the edge: knife, piped or flanged. Choose a hidden zipper or an envelope back, the fabric and the fullness. The studio shows the pillow on a sofa and lists every cut piece, the piping length and the fabric to buy.

Drag to turn, pinch or scroll to zoom. With the preview focused: arrow keys turn it, + and − zoom, Home resets.

    Workshop notes

      What to send the workshop

      1. This ticket with sizes and quantities.
      2. Fabric and piping codes, written as “body” and “piping”.
      3. For covers only: the insert’s exact size, measured flat.
      4. A photo of the sofa or bench they will sit on, in daylight.

      Buyer questions

Every control in this builder answers a question buyers commonly ask. Here are some of them, with the workshop’s answers.

      1. A common question

Can you make pillows in the same fabric as my bench cushion?

        The workshop's answer

Yes, and often. Mixed combinations work too — one pillow in deep olive with beige piping, a smaller one in the bench fabric with olive piping. Send the sizes, how many, piping or not and the fabric codes in one message.

      2. A common question

Are the covers removable, and can they go in the washing machine?

        The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cover has a zipper and comes off completely, and all the fabrics — velvet and linen included — wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Air dry rather than machine dry, and iron on low if needed.

      3. A common question

My pillows arrived looking underfilled. Is that right?

        The workshop's answer

They travel vacuum-packed, so the filling shifts to the middle. Pat and shake them to push it back into the corners and give them a day or two. The corners stay a little less full than the body, but there should be no empty gaps. The filling is shredded foam.

      4. A common question

Can the bolsters have clean straight piping and a button in the middle of each end?

        The workshop's answer

Yes. The craftsman ran a test piece first and confirmed that straight piping and buttons come out with clean edges; bolsters can have plain straight piping with a center button.

      5. A common question

Why does the same fabric look lighter in one photo and darker in another?

        The workshop's answer

Light and camera settings change how a color reads — warm or white light pushes it one way or the other. Trust the chart and physical samples first, and use real-home photos to see how it lives in a room.

      6. A common question

I already have inserts. Can I order just the covers?

        The workshop's answer

Yes. Zippered covers are made to your measurements; give the insert’s length and width — and the thickness for boxed ones — and they fit snugly.

      How to use the builder

      1. Choose the size

Square throws for sofa corners, a lumbar to run along a bench or bed, a bolster for the arms of a daybed or window seat.

      2. Choose the edge

A knife edge is the quiet one. Piping draws the outline, in the same cloth or a contrast. A flange frames the pillow with a flat border, and the stuffed body inside it is smaller.

      3. Choose the closure

A hidden zipper in the bottom seam, or an envelope back that simply overlaps.

      4. Pick the cloth, then check it in daylight

Use the swatches to narrow the choice, then look at close-ups or samples by a window: screens vary, daylight does not lie.

      5. Set the fullness and copy the cut list

Fullness only changes the preview; the ticket lists the finished size, every cut piece and the piping length for your maker.

      A real project

Bolsters made entirely in the piping stripe

A buyer ordered two bench cushions in a deep red with black-and-white striped piping, and two long bolsters, about 7 by 65 in and 7 by 47 in. Then came the good idea: make the bolsters entirely in the stripe. The red speaks, the stripe answers, and the two never argue.

Try it here: choose the bolster, the striped cotton and a fine scale, and put the pillow beside a plain one. Let one color speak and the others listen.

      Questions about the builder

What size insert goes in a flanged cover?

The insert fills the stuffed body only, so a 20 × 20 in cover with a 2 in flange needs a 16 × 16 in insert. The ticket shows the body size whenever you choose a flange.

Knife edge or piping on a velvet pillow?

Velvet already catches the light on its pile. Self piping gives it a crisp line without a second color; a contrast cord turns the edge into a drawing. Both are sewn the same way.

Which way should stripes run on a long lumbar?

Stripes running up and down repeat many times across a 36 in lumbar and feel lively; stripes running along the length stretch it. Tell your maker which you want — it changes how the panels are cut.

Does the studio work without WebGL?

Partly. Without WebGL the 3D pillow cannot be drawn, but every control still updates the front-view drawing and the cut list, and the PNG button saves that drawing to send with your order.
