Mudroom and entry bench cushions that take the daily traffic

Wet boots, a leash and three backpacks, every single day. Nine past entry-bench orders, and the numbers that kept each cushion honest.

The quick answer

A mudroom bench cushion should be sized from the seat height you want, cut to the bench's true measurements and covered in a wipe-clean fabric. Subtract the bench height from your target seat (18 in minus 15 in means a 3 in cushion), measure after the bench is installed, choose soft poly-cotton or performance velvet that washes at 86°F (30°C), and add a non-slip base.

Sat on all day, usually by someone in one boot

A mudroom bench gets sat on more times a day than the sofa, usually by someone wearing one boot.

That is the job description for a mudroom bench cushion: wet soles, a leash, a backpack dropped from shoulder height and a wipe-down most evenings. Pretty comes second, and I say that as someone who once covered her own entry bench in pale linen and spent a winter regretting it.

The nine benches below are past orders, each with the sizes that fit. Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have.

Sketch yours in the bench cushion builder, check the subtraction in the seat height calculator, and browse the mudroom and entryway bench cushions hub. For boots and dogs, the shortlist lives in performance and pet-friendly fabrics. What does your bench measure from the floor to the top of the seat, dear?

Nine entry benches and what each one taught

  1. 01A past project

An 18 in seat from a 15 in niche

A buyer in the US had a mudroom niche 17 x 35.75 in (43 x 91 cm) and 15 in (38 cm) high, and wanted the seat top at 18 in (46 cm). That meant a 3 in (7.6 cm) cushion. The workshop said to pick the 17 in width, 36 in length and 3 in thickness and write the exact size in the note.

The takeaway: Subtract the bench height from the seat you want; the difference is the cushion.

  2. 02A past project

Wait for the bench to arrive

A buyer got in touch about a new entry bench, 47 in (119 cm) wide and 18.5 in (47 cm) deep, asking whether the cushion should be an inch smaller. The workshop said to order the exact size for a full look, through the 18 x 48 in option at the standard 4 in (10 cm). They waited for the bench, measured it in place and ordered two; the buyer called them gorgeous.

The takeaway: Measure after the bench is installed and order its exact size.

  3. 03A past project

Stripes, a series code and a remake

A buyer wrote to the workshop about a mudroom with gray cabinets and tan linen chairs, choosing a striped fabric by series code for cushions of 20 x 27 in (51 x 69 cm) and 20 x 44 in (51 x 112 cm). They came in the color that code named, not the one she meant. The workshop let her keep both and remade the pair in the right color at a reduced cost, the shorter one now 20 x 26 in (51 x 66 cm).

The takeaway: Get a photo of the exact fabric beside its code before anything is cut.

  4. 04A past project

A boot-room bench with wood at the ends

A buyer got in touch with a green painted boot-room bench, wood sticking out at both ends, wanting one neutral and no velvet. Of three warm neutrals from the soft fabric range, 910 won, with matching piping, because it washes easily. It went through the custom-shape route with the buyer's photos, and when the final check found a small flaw, the cover was remade before shipping.

The takeaway: Order any bench with jutting wood as a custom shape, with photos.

  5. 05A past project

An angled window bench and its mudroom twin

A repeat buyer in the US ordered a symmetrical angled window bench in orange linen-look, through the 21.5 x 68 in (55 x 173 cm) option with angled sides of 1.5, 12 and 9.5 in (4, 30.5 and 24 cm), plus a matching mudroom bench. It fit perfectly. Then the cover met a hot iron and melted, because linen-look is synthetic.

The takeaway: Iron linen-look on low heat only, if at all.

  6. 06A past project

    Mustard, tufted, every single day

A buyer got in touch wanting a tufted mustard cushion about 64 x 17.7 in (162.4 x 45 cm) for a daily-use entry bench: durable, not velvet, no handles. The workshop recommended the soft-touch poly-cotton, its easy-clean best seller, and explained that tufted covers can't come off, though an untufted cushion can have a zippered cover. The buyer chose tufted.

The takeaway: Choose between the tufted look and a zip-off, washable cover before you order.

  7. 07A past project

Two dogs and an oatmeal room

A dog owner in the US asked whether linen could survive dogs jumping on it in an oatmeal-and-charcoal room. The workshop pointed to a pet-friendly polyester instead: 88,000 Martindale, 370 g/m² (about 10.9 oz per square yard), wipe-clean, with a warning that the darkest charcoal reads nearly black. The owner chose oatmeal with contrasting piping and added the non-slip base.

The takeaway: Where dogs jump up, choose a high-Martindale polyester over natural linen.

  8. 08A past project

Short by almost 2 in out of the box

A buyer in the US ordered a 14 x 56.25 in (36 x 143 cm) velvet entry bench cushion and asked the workshop to hold it until after a move. Opened, it measured about 54.5 x 14.75 in (138 x 37.5 cm), leaving a gap at the wall. The workshop asked for tape-measure photos, explained that vacuum compression can shrink a cushion for a while, and offered a discounted remake in Mushroom Taupe 108, 2 in (5 cm) thick.

The takeaway: Open a vacuum-packed cushion right away and measure it against your order.

  9. 09A past project

    The grip you never see

Some buyers expect a non-slip base to be a separate mat. It is the cover's whole bottom panel, sewn in grippy anti-skid fabric, and it holds by friction rather than glue, so it leaves no residue on a painted or wooden bench. It's an optional extra, priced by cushion size and requested in personalization.

The takeaway: Add the non-slip base when you order, so it shows on the quote.

Which fabric survives which mudroom

The fabric decides whether Saturday is for scrubbing. Read pet-friendly cushion fabric and which way stripes run, and see striped cotton and ticking for the crisp option.

A mudroom bench cushion is sized from the seat: a 15 in bench and an 18 in target seat call for a 3 in cushion.

Mudroom questions

  1. A common question

Does a bench cushion come with a non-slip bottom, or is that extra?

    The workshop's answer

It's an optional add-on, not standard, and it can go on any shape: bench, entryway, window seat, daybed or trapezoid cushions. The cost scales with the cushion's size. Order as usual, write 'non-slip base' and your exact size in the personalization note, and the workshop either builds it into your quote or sends a link for the difference. You can choose it for some cushions in a set and not others.

  2. A common question

Which fabric is easiest to keep clean with kids and a dog coming through the door?

    The workshop's answer

The first question back is indoors or out. Indoors, the top pick is soft fabric: durable, smooth, resistant to wear in busy rooms, and it doesn't collect dust or lint. Velvet is also easy to clean and pet-friendly, and there are water-resistant wipe-clean charts. Outdoors, use the water-repellent range. Covers wash at 86°F (30°C).

  3. A common question

Are these performance fabrics with a stain-proof coating on them?

    The workshop's answer

They're performance fabrics made for daily use: machine washable, pre-shrunk and suited to high-traffic spots, and the velvet is a performance velvet. The striped fabrics are the exception; they're 100% cotton and may not last as long. No branded stain-proof finish or coating is applied, so for families with small children, soft fabric and velvet are the easiest to wash and wipe.

  4. A common question

My tufted bench cushion can't go in the washer. How do I clean it?

    The workshop's answer

Clean it where it sits, gently by hand: wipe the surface with a damp cloth, and use a little mild soap and water on marks. The soft fabric range wipes clean most easily. If you'd rather machine wash, choose the untufted foam version, which has a zippered, removable cover.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a mudroom bench cushion be?

Work backward from the seat height you want and subtract the bench height: a 15 in (38 cm) bench and an 18 in (46 cm) target need a 3 in (7.6 cm) cushion. The standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm). The seat height calculator does the subtraction for you.

Should an entry bench cushion be smaller than the bench?

Not on an open bench. For a full look, order the bench's exact size, measured after it is delivered and installed. Only a bench walled in on three sides needs a few millimeters off; see alcove and hallway niche bench cushions.

Why would a brand-new bench cushion measure shorter than ordered?

Vacuum compression can shrink a cushion for a while after it arrives. Open the package promptly, measure every edge with a tape, and send photos to the maker if it still falls short of your order. Read the first 72 hours with a vacuum-packed cushion.

Will a mudroom bench cushion slide when people sit down to pull on boots?

It can on a smooth painted or wooden bench. A non-slip base, a grippy bottom panel sewn into the cover, holds by friction without glue; ties are the other option. Both are add-ons, so confirm them in writing. See how to stop a bench cushion sliding.
