A Reading by NateBench Cushions
A mustard mudroom bench cushion, and a no-sag project from question to delivery
Mustard on white tongue-and-groove, brass hooks overhead, a terrier on the rug. I read it as a spec sheet, then walk through a real order that asked the same questions.
SaveThe quick answer
A custom bench cushion that must not sag starts with the foam: the standard 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) grade already holds its shape. Thickness then sets seat height, so a 15 in (38 cm) mudroom bench plus a 3 in (7.5 cm) cushion sits at 18 in (46 cm). Split benches over about 75 in into two pieces.
The 7 in bench cushion, cut open
Performance cover. A tough woven performance fabric, zipped and removable. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.
Fiber wrap. Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.
Foam core. About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³): the standard grade, which holds its shape without sagging. Cut 7 in (18 cm) thick for this project.
Zipper. Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.
Base panel. The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.
The photo, read like a drawing
Start with the cushion. It runs the full length of the bench with no gap at either end. The front end is rounded, a bullnose edge, which is kinder to shins in a hallway where people pull boots on in a hurry. The color is mustard, a mid-tone that hides dust and dried mud far better than cream.
Now the supporting parts. Two linen pillows with brown contrast piping tie the seat to the tweed coat on the brass hook and the boots below. The canvas tote says the bench is used daily. The terrier asleep on the kilim rug has its own spot, which keeps the cushion for people. That is not decoration, partner. That is traffic planning.
One question before we go on: what does your bench measure from the floor to the top of the seat board? Everything below depends on it.

Five callouts, from the hooks down to the dog.

- Rounded front end
A softly rounded front edge is kinder to shins in a busy hallway.
- Mustard seat
Mustard hides mud and dust better than cream in an entry.
- Piped linen pillows
Brown piping on the pillows links them to the boots and coat.
- Coat on brass hook
Brass hooks and tweed set a country-house tone for the bench.
- Terrier on kilim
The rug gives the dog its own spot so the cushion stays for people.

The choices, side by side
Three decisions from the story below, with the numbers the workshop gave.
| Decision | Option A | Option B | Chosen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foam | Ask for something sturdier | Standard 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) | Standard; it does not sag |
| Seat thickness | 6 in (15 cm) | 7 in (18 cm) | 7 in |
| 97.5 in (248 cm) outdoor bench | One long cushion | Two 48.75 in (124 cm) cushions | Two, each with a bolster |
Seat height = bench height + cushion thickness. Run the numbers in the seat height calculator.
The result: two benches, two bolsters, one flat surprise
A buyer in the US wanted very sturdy cushions for two indoor benches, 53.5 and 54 in long (136 and 137 cm) and 20 in deep, later corrected to 19.75 in (50 cm). Measure twice; the fabric remembers. Two 44 in (112 cm) bolsters, 6 in (15 cm) across, completed the set, in white performance fabric with no piping.
The workshop explained that its standard foam already holds up, then priced the seats at 6 in and at 7 in. They chose 7 in.
A second set followed for a 97.5 in outdoor bench: two 48.75 x 21 in (124 x 53 cm) seats at 8 in (20 cm) and two 7 in (18 cm) bolsters, white with black piping. One bolster arrived flat from its vacuum pack; the workshop explained recovery time and asked for a photo. See one piece or two.
- Sizes
- 53.5 x 19.75 x 7 in and 54 x 19.75 x 7 in; bolsters 44 x 6 in; outdoor 2 x 48.75 x 21 x 8 in
- Fabric
- White performance weave; white outdoor fabric with black piping
The lesson: Split a long bench into two cushions and two bolsters: easier to handle, same look.
Buyer questions: fit, backs and height
- A common question
I measured wrong and the cushion is about 15 in short for my 70 in space. Can I return it and reorder?
The workshop's answerReturns are possible, but return shipping is costly and no return labels are provided. The workshop offered a better fix: add-on filler cushions, two 7.5 in seat pieces and two 7.5 in back pieces, one of each at either end so the main cushion stays centered.
- A common question
Should the back cushion be firm foam, or soft like a pillow?
The workshop's answerEither works. The workshop asks if you want it foam-filled or pillow-soft, and will pair a firm foam seat with a softer back pillow if that is what your photo shows.
- A common question
What size cushion should I order for a mudroom bench niche?
The workshop's answerFor a niche 17 x 35.75 in and 15 in high, a 3 in cushion gives the 18 in seat height the buyer wanted. Select 17 x 36 in at 3 in thick, then write the exact 17 x 35.75 x 3 in in the order note.
Over about 75 in, split a bench cushion into two equal pieces. Two 48.75 in cushions carry, wash and ship better than one 97.5 in slab.

Questions buyers ask next
What fabric holds up best on an entry bench used by big dogs?
For a busy entry with dogs, the workshop has pointed buyers to its outdoor fabric as the rugged choice. No fabric survives every claw, but tight, flat weaves snag far less than looped ones.
Can a bench cushion have a rounded front end?
Yes. Rounded ends and corners are made as custom shapes. Send a drawing of the bench with every edge measured, and mark where each curve starts and ends.
How thick can a bench cushion go?
The standard options are 2, 3, 4 and 5 in (5 to 12.5 cm). Thicker builds such as 6, 7 and 8 in are made on request at extra cost. Every inch of cushion raises the seat by an inch.
