A zebra-print custom bench cushion in a narrow hallway, taken apart layer by layer

Nate reads an entryway the way he reads a seat drawing: top to bottom, one layer at a time, each prop with a job and a number worth checking.

Late sun, an amber lamp and a zebra cushion give a narrow hallway a proper place to sit and tie laces.

The quick answer

A custom bench cushion for a narrow entryway should be slim, boxed and firm, so the bench still looks light and people can pass. Style it in layers: one bold pattern on the seat, plain furniture beside it, a mirror or lamp that repeats the cushion's colors at eye level, and a basket underneath to hide shoes.

The cushion, cut open

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 4 in (10 cm) on 17¾ in, to proportion.1. Cover fabric: A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.; 2. Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Cover fabric3Fiber wrap2Piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core2.0 lb HR foam4 in10 cm17¾ in deep · 45 cm

The hallway bench stack, read from mirror to doormat

A hallway bench is a small engineering problem with shoes in it. You need a seat, a walkway and somewhere to drop keys, all inside a few feet of floor. This one solves it in layers, so let's read it the way I read a seat drawing: top to bottom.

Eye level. A round black-framed mirror. Its thin black line repeats the zebra stripes, so the pattern shows up twice without a second patterned object. To the right, an amber ribbed-glass lamp throws a warm glow that matches the caramel pillow and the oak bench top. Eucalyptus stems in a glass vase add one soft green vertical against all that black and white.

Seat level. The custom bench cushion itself: black and white zebra print on cotton canvas, a slim box with self piping. It is only about twice as thick as the oak top, which keeps the bench looking light in a narrow hall. Three pillows step black, white, caramel, the same order you meet in the mirror frame, the shoe cabinet and the lamp. The white three-drawer shoe cabinet beside it is plain on purpose, so the print is the only loud note.

Floor level. A wicker basket under the bench gives the setup a lower layer and hides the shoes. Without it the bench would seem to float. A jute rug and a coir doormat take the grit.

Late golden sun does the rest. Measure twice; the fabric remembers, and in a hallway the number that matters most is the free walkway, measured with the bench in place, before you settle on seat depth. The cotton canvas prints sit with the striped cotton and ticking fabrics, more entry setups live under mudroom and entryway bench cushions, and the full range is in bench cushions. What is the clear width of your hallway with the bench in it?

  5. White shoe cabinet

A plain white cabinet next to it lets the patterned seat be the only bold note.

The bench that changed height after the cushions shipped

A buyer abroad, working with an interior designer, ordered a 98 x 17¾ in (249 x 45 cm) seat on 7⅞ in (20 cm) of foam, plus a back cushion whose height moved three times: 19¾ in (50 cm), then 20¼ in (51.5 cm), then 13 in (33 cm) at 3⅛ in (8 cm) thick, with the bottom edge shaped to follow the angled back. The first set was sewn in a poly-cotton performance fabric in 3 to 5 business days and shipped in 2 to 4.

Then the carpenter finished the bench. The final frame only suited a 4¾ in (12 cm) seat. Rather than have the cushions shipped back, the workshop remade them at 98 x 17¾ x 4¾ in (249 x 45 x 12 cm) for the seat and 98 x 15¾ x 2⅜ in (249 x 40 x 6 cm) for the back, and the buyer switched to a dark navy.

Partner, the cushion is the last dimension in the stack, not the first. Confirm the finished bench height and back angle with your carpenter before anyone orders foam depth; the seat height calculator shows what each thickness does to your knees.

Three measuring questions, answered with numbers

  1. A common question

My bench has a small notch at each end. Can you make two cushions, split in the middle, that fit around them?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop confirmed the split point, exactly in the middle, and asked whether the notches sit on the back edge, where the zipper goes. A photo of the bench settled which side the zippers belonged on.

  2. A common question

How tall, wide and thick is the backrest on the floor sofa?

    The workshop's answer

On the standard floor sofa the backrest is 16 in (40 cm) wide and 4 in (10 cm) thick. On the 12 in thick model the backrest stands 12 in (30 cm) high, the same as the seat, so seat and back together reach 24 in (61 cm).

  3. A common question

I typed my measurements in centimeters when I meant inches. Can it still be fixed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes: place a new order with the corrected size. Before cutting, the workshop compared the new numbers with the buyer's photo, saw that 62.4 x 63 in could not fit a space about 24 in wide, and asked for a re-measure. The final size was 24⅝ x 63 in (62.5 x 160 cm), and the difference was refunded because it came out smaller than the quote.

In a narrow hallway, a bench cushion about twice as thick as the bench top keeps the bench looking light; four times as thick and it reads as a bed.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should the cushion be on a slim oak hallway bench?

Thin enough that the bench still looks light; in this photo the cushion is roughly twice the thickness of the oak top. Check the finished seat height with the cushion added, so knees sit at a comfortable angle for tying laces.

Can a zebra-print bench cushion work with a patterned hallway rug?

Keep one pattern loud. Here the zebra print is the only bold note, and the jute rug and coir mat add texture, not pattern. If your rug is already patterned, choose a solid cushion in the rug's darkest color instead.

Which way should the zipper face on an entryway bench cushion?

Toward the wall, on the back edge. In a hallway the front edge is what visitors see and what legs rub against. If the bench has notches or posts at the back, send a photo so the zipper lands on the correct side.
