A denim blue bench cushion at the mudroom door, and everything around it

Brass, tweed, oatmeal linen and brown leather. Every object at this door was chosen to keep one mid-blue calm instead of cold.

A denim blue bullnose cushion softens a white mudroom bench. The rounded front edge is easy on legs when you sit to pull on boots.

The quick answer

A mudroom bench cushion looks best in a mid-tone performance weave such as denim blue, surrounded by warm props: brass hooks, a tweed or canvas layer, two oatmeal pillows and leather boots below. Mid-tones hide dust and pet hair better than white or black, and a rounded bullnose front is kinder to the backs of the knees.

Buyer questions: long built-ins, a matching valance, two odd sizes

  1. A common question

Why does a custom set of replacement cushions for our built-in bench cost so much?

    The workshop's answer

Everything is cut and sewn by hand from good materials, and long runs take a lot of both. One US set covered an 80 in (203 cm) run and a 139 in (353 cm) run, each 22.5 in (57 cm) deep, with backs sized to the height left above the seat. A run that long can be split into two equal sections.

  2. A common question

Can you also make a valance or a simple top border for the window so it matches the bench?

    The workshop's answer

Valances and window coverings are not made in the workshop. It can supply the same fabric, though, so the window treatment matches the bench cushion.

  3. A common question

I need two window seat cushions in gray, each a different size. How do I order them?

    The workshop's answer

Send the size of each one, fractions included, for example 19 3/8 x 75 5/8 in and 19 7/8 x 72 1/2 in, plus a link or photo of the style you want. The workshop then makes a custom order link for both.

Now, the reading

Why the brass matters more than the blue

Take the brass hooks away and this denim blue bench cushion goes cold, like a sidewalk in February. The hooks are doing half the work.

The cushion itself is plain on purpose: one rectangle of tight mid-blue performance weave on a white board-and-batten bench, no piping, and a bullnose front that rolls over the edge instead of stopping at a sharp corner. At a door you perch for thirty seconds to pull on boots. The rounded edge is what the backs of your knees meet.

Clean morning light comes in from the side. In it, denim blue reads true to its name: washed, faintly gray at the shoulders, a little warmer where the sun crosses the weave. Beside white paint a pale cushion would look tired by March. A mid-tone holds.

If you are planning one, start with mudroom and entryway bench cushions and the performance and pet-friendly fabrics.

  1. Bullnose front

  2. Denim blue weave

A tight mid-blue weave shrugs off dust and pet hair at the door.

  3. Brass hooks

Warm brass hardware pairs with blue the way buttons do on a navy coat.

  4. Boots below

Keeping the space under the bench open leaves the cushion as the only soft layer.

  5. Linen pillows

Two oatmeal pillows in the corner make the bench inviting without clutter.

Brass, tweed, oatmeal and leather, one by one

Brass hooks. Warm metal beside blue is the oldest pairing in the closet: gold buttons on a navy coat. The hooks hang right above the cushion, so the eye reads them as a set.

A tweed jacket and a canvas tote. Two textures that look lived-in on purpose. Tweed brings flecks of brown and rust; the canvas belongs to the same oatmeal family as the pillows. Neither is blue. Let one color speak and the others listen.

Two oatmeal linen pillows. Only two, pushed into one corner. They say sit here without turning a working bench into a sofa. A third would be in the way of the next pair of boots.

Brown leather Chelsea boots live under the bench, on wide oak planks, and the rest of that space stays open. The cushion remains the only soft layer, which is why the corner looks tidy. The honey floor under the blue works like a frame under a painting.

To copy it, my friends: one mid-tone cushion, one warm metal, two neutral pillows and an open floor below. What hangs above your bench right now?

A real project

Three benches and two slim bolsters

An interior designer in the US wrote to the workshop with three benches in one project. Two were long and shallow: 60.5 x 21 in (154 x 53 cm) and 68 x 21 in (173 x 53 cm), each only 2 in (5 cm) thick, each with a slim bolster 4 in (10 cm) across, all in a mushroom taupe. The third was larger, 77.5 x 25 in (197 x 64 cm) and 3 in (7.6 cm) thick, in a second fabric.

The workshop added piping in the same color at no charge. Production took 7 to 9 days, delivery another 3 to 5.

The bolster is the detail I keep. A standard one would have loomed over a 2 in pad like a log on a doorstep. At 4 in across it sits like a rolled cuff at the end of the bench. The diameter is the one prop measurement people forget to write down.

The lesson: Give the bolster diameter on the order; a slim 4 in (10 cm) bolster suits a 2 in (5 cm) bench pad.

If a bench cushion sits by the back door, choose a mid-tone like denim blue: white shows every paw print and black shows every speck of dust.

Questions buyers ask next

What color bench cushion hides dirt best in a mudroom?

A mid-tone. Denim blue, slate, mushroom or a muted green hide dust, grit and pet hair far better than white, which shows every mark, or black, which shows every pale hair and speck of dried mud.

What is a bullnose edge on a bench cushion?

A front edge that rolls over in a smooth curve instead of meeting the top at a sharp boxed corner. It feels softer behind the knees on a seat used briefly, like an entryway bench where people sit to pull on boots.

How many pillows belong on an entryway bench?

Two at most, pushed into one corner. An entry bench is a working seat: people sit, pull on boots and stand up again. More pillows end up on the floor or take the room the next person needs.

What size bolster suits a thin bench cushion?

A slim one. For bench pads 2 in (5 cm) thick, one designer chose bolsters 4 in (10 cm) across, which keeps the end of the bench in proportion. Always give the bolster diameter along with its length.
