A gray corduroy custom bench cushion with navy piping, and how it will wear by the door
Harlan puts a pale corduroy seat on a dark storage bench through a working year of boots, paws, spilled juice and afternoon sun, and says what the navy cord is really for.
SaveThe quick answer
A light gray corduroy bench cushion with navy piping ages well at a busy door if you plan for it: the dark cord guards the edges where bags and boots rub, four corner ties keep the seat from sliding, and a matching backrest is made the same length as the seat. The pale top shows life first, so blot spills and brush along the wale.
Why a pale seat on a dark cabinet needed a dark line
Here's a light gray corduroy cushion on a storage bench of dark wood grain, set under a window. Pale on dark. Left alone, a cushion like that looks like it's hovering an inch above its base, like a guest nobody has asked to sit.
The navy piping is the help. A dark cord runs along the top edge and the bottom edge, and those two lines tie the light seat down to the dark cabinet. One piece covers the whole long top, and that single run makes the bench look longer under the window than it is.
The room is bright and a touch bohemian. Rattan folding screens stand behind, two woven pendants repeat that weave at ceiling height, a snake plant on the white console lifts the corner, and a round mirror catches the window. A blush pink rug warms the gray and the dark wood both. That's a lot of company, and the plain gray cushion is the calm middle of it. Seats like this fill our entryway and mudroom bench cushions, and the cloth comes off the corduroy shelf.
Buy the cushion once, cry once, my friend. An entryway seat works harder than any sofa in the house, so let's put this one through a year. What comes through your front door on four legs?

The daily life test, one line at a time
- Kids: boots and backpacks hit the front edge first, and the navy cord takes those scuffs where pale gray would show them.
- Dogs: a light top shows dark hair and muddy paws before anything else, so brush the corduroy along the wale and clean it often.
- Spills: blot, never rub; rubbing crushes the ribs and leaves a flat patch you'll see in side light.
- Sun: a seat under a window takes the afternoon light every day, so turn the cushion end to end now and then to share it out.
- Sliding: four corner ties knotted under the bench keep the seat still when someone drops onto it.
Three straight edges, one angle, and a half inch to decide
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a nook with three straight edges and one angled side. They sent photos and drawings, which is exactly what a workroom hopes for. The shop said it would be easy, even offered a custom 4.5 in (11.5 cm) thickness, and told them to select a depth of 29 in (74 cm) and a length of 53 in (135 cm).
In the end the buyer settled on the standard 4 in (10 cm) and asked for the piping in the same fabric as the body. The shop confirmed that was fine.
A clear drawing and a photo of the space make an odd angle as easy to sew as a plain rectangle. If your bench has one slanted end, start your sketch in the trapezoid cushion calculator, and see ties and non-slip bases before you choose how it stays put.

Buyer questions: backs, ties and a price question
- A common question
If I order a 59 in (150 cm) seat, will the backrest be 59 in too? And how tall is it?
The workshop's answerYes. The seat and backrest are made the same length. The standard backrest is 16 in (41 cm) tall and can be made taller. Round armrests, if you add them, are 4 in (10 cm) shorter than the seat depth.
- A common question
Can you sew on ties so I can fasten the cushion underneath my bench? How many would I need?
The workshop's answerYes; just leave a note with your order. Ties are sewn into the cushion seam. To tie under the base you need one at each corner, four in all, so opposite ties knot to each other underneath. Two ties on the back edge only is the other option.
- A common question
Can you give me a price for a custom rectangular cushion?
The workshop's answerYes. The shop quotes custom rectangles, and the same price appears on the listing when you select the matching size range, so the quote and the listing agree.
When the bench base is dark and the cushion is light, dark piping along the top and bottom edges is the tailor's trick for making the two belong together.

Questions buyers ask next
Will navy piping hide wear on a light gray bench cushion?
It helps a great deal. The edges are where bags, boots and hands rub most, and a dark cord shows scuffs far less than pale fabric does. The top surface still shows life first, so plan to brush and spot-clean it.
Is corduroy sensible for a bench by the front door?
It can be, with a little care. The ribs are soft to sit on but crush if you rub at a spill. Blot instead, brush along the wale, and choose a light or middle tone that forgives dust better than a very dark one.
Why cover a long storage bench with one cushion instead of two?
On a single cabinet top, one piece looks longer and cleaner, as it does under this window. Splitting is usually kept for very long benches where one cushion would be awkward to lift and handle.
How thick should a cushion on an entryway storage bench be?
Four inches (10 cm) is the standard and suits most storage benches. One buyer with an angled nook was offered 4.5 in (11.5 cm) and still chose the standard 4 in.
