A Reading by HarlanBench Cushions
A letter about a custom bench cushion in teal corduroy and the company it keeps
Somebody chose every object on this bench on purpose. I want to walk you through them the way the old men in my first shop walked me through a room: slowly, and with the lights low.
SaveThe quick answer
To style a bench cushion against a dark wall, pick a saturated mid-tone for the cushion, such as petrol teal, and take it from a color already in the room's art. Layer pillows dark to light, with a chunky knit behind and a sheen fabric in front, and keep the cushion thinner than the bench so the wood edge shows.
High Point ·
My friend,
Dear reader, about that bench in the dark hall
A bench cushion against a charcoal wall is a gamble, and this one pays off. The pad is petrol teal corduroy, cut to the exact footprint of a light oak slab bench. Nothing hangs over. Nothing falls short.
Look at the thickness first. The cushion is about a third as thick as the oak slab, so a clean band of wood still shows under it. A fatter cushion would have swallowed the bench, and a bench this handsome deserves to be seen.
Then the color. That teal was not picked from a chart in a hurry. It was lifted from the blues in the navy and gold canvas above, and that is why the seat looks planned instead of added later. On a dark wall, black would disappear and white would shout. A saturated middle tone holds its own.
Now the company it keeps, one piece at a time.
- Charcoal chunky-knit pillow, set at the back. Dark first, so it melts into the wall and gives the seat depth.
- Silver lumbar with geometric stitching, in front. A sheen fabric catches what little light a dark wall allows.
- Rubber plant in a glazed navy pot. The one living green, and the pot repeats the navy in the canvas.
- Glass and amber vases on the picture ledge. Their warm tone answers the gold in the painting.
- Black knot sculpture on stacked books. One small hard shape among all that soft texture.
- Gray wool rug. It keeps the pale oak from floating.
Corduroy was the right call for a dim corner. The wales take side light in fine stripes, so even a dark hall shows texture. There is more on that in corduroy wale and nap direction, and the whole family lives under corduroy, beside the other bench cushions and our entryway bench notes. What is hanging above your bench right now?
Pinned by Harlan: five things on the dark wall
Five pins, from the teal cord pad to the navy and gold canvas it borrowed its color from.

- Teal cord pad
Color lifted from the canvas above, so the seat looks planned.
- Charcoal knit pillow
Dark pillow first, it melts into the wall and adds depth.
- Silver lumbar
A sheen fabric in front catches what little light the dark wall allows.
- Oak slab leg
Cushion stays thinner than the slab so the oak edge still reads.
- Abstract canvas
Navy and gold in the art tie the teal seat to the brass-toned vases.

How to copy the look on your own bench
- Pull the cushion color from art or a rug already in the room, not from the paint chart.
- On a charcoal or navy wall, choose a saturated mid-tone; skip black and bright white.
- Keep the cushion thinner than the bench top so a line of wood shows.
- Cut the pad to the bench's exact footprint; no overhang on a slab bench.
- Layer pillows dark to light: a knit at the back, a sheen fabric in front.
- Add one plant in a pot that repeats a color from the art.
The bench with one curved end, and why a drawing came first
A buyer messaged the workshop about a bench cushion with one curved end: 70 1/2 in (179 cm) along the long side, 57 1/2 in (146 cm) along the short side, 15 3/8 in (39 cm) wide, with a smooth curve of 15 3/8 x 13 in (39 x 33 cm) joining them.
Good numbers. Not enough of them. Before the shop would confirm the shape, it asked for a sketch showing exactly where the curve starts and where it ends. Two cushions can share every one of those measurements and still curve differently.
Once the drawing came in, the order went through the custom-shape option, with the size range chosen by the 70 1/2 in length and the 15 3/8 in width. Production took 5 to 10 business days, and delivery another 2 to 4. A seam is a promise, and a drawing makes sure it is the right promise. The method is in curved cushions: chord, rise and radius.
Buyer questions: backs, feathers and cushions that wander
- A common question
Can you make an L-shaped bench cushion with back cushions to match?
The workshop's answerYes. Send the length, width and thickness of each run, plus a quick sketch or a photo of the spot, and the shop will quote. One L-shaped lounge bed of about 172 3/4 x 73 1/4 in (439 x 186 cm) used one 23 5/8 x 73 1/4 in (60 x 186 cm) seat and two 23 5/8 x 74 3/4 in (60 x 190 cm) seats, 3 1/8 in (8 cm) thick, with four wedge backrests.
- A common question
Could the foam be wrapped in feathers, maybe 20 percent feather, for a softer window seat?
The workshop's answerFeather-wrapped foam isn't offered. The shop can wrap the foam in Dacron instead for extra comfort, as it did on a trapezoid window seat measuring 96 and 55 1/2 in (244 and 141 cm) along its long edges, 19 1/4 in (49 cm) deep and 4 in (10 cm) thick.
- A common question
My back cushions lie along the bench. How do I keep them from sliding off?
The workshop's answerAsk for a non-slip bottom. The shop can put one on every cushion, backrests included, so nothing slides. Just say which cushions should get it when you order.

If the wall is charcoal, a black bench cushion disappears and a white one shouts. A saturated mid-tone like petrol teal holds its own.

Questions buyers ask next
What color bench cushion works against a charcoal wall?
A saturated mid-tone such as petrol teal, taken from a color in the art or rug. Black tends to vanish into a dark wall and bright white jumps forward, so the middle of the range holds up best in dim light.
Should a bench cushion be thinner than the bench?
On a handsome slab bench, yes. Here the pad is about a third as thick as the oak, so a band of wood still shows beneath it and the bench keeps its shape instead of disappearing under the seat.
Why layer pillows dark to light on a bench?
A dark pillow at the back sinks into a dark wall and adds depth, while a lighter sheen fabric in front catches the light. The pair reads in layers instead of as one flat block of color.
How do I order a bench cushion with a curved end?
Give every straight length and the width, then draw the curve and mark where it starts and ends. The shop asked for exactly that sketch before confirming one curved-end bench cushion.
Sit well. — Harlan
