Texas is three porches in one state, neighbor: a sticky one on the Gulf, a baking one in the middle and a windy one out west, and a cushion has to earn its keep on all three.

SaveTwo pairs of forest green seat and back cushions turn a built-in masonry bench into outdoor seating on a whitewashed terrace.
The quick answer
Texas patio cushions should be made in UV-resistant, water-repellent outdoor fabric, built without tufts and tied down where the wind blows. Choose lighter colors for west-facing patios, split very long pool and fire-pit benches into pieces, and stack everything under cover when hail or a Gulf storm is coming.

Heat, hail and two kinds of air
Dallas sees about 104 days a year at 90°F (32°C) or hotter. Houston sees about 106. In July the noon UV Index sits around 10 in both, and that is the sun a west-facing patio cushion takes every afternoon.
The air splits the state in two. Houston mornings average close to 89% humidity, so a soaked cushion takes its sweet time drying. El Paso mornings average about 50%, and out on the plains the wind will lift a light cushion clean off a bench.
Then comes spring. Texas leads the country in hail insurance claims, and on the coast hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. A patio cushion here needs somewhere to go in a hurry.
Ranch houses, dogtrots and the covered patio
Texas homes are built around the patio, not the deck. Ranch houses and farmhouses, Craftsman bungalows, big suburban builds with an outdoor kitchen. Hill Country homes in pale limestone. And the old dogtrot: two cabins joined by a roofed breezeway.
Those houses hand us the seats: a sectional on the covered patio, a bench by the pool, a masonry bench around the fire pit, a porch swing, and inside, a family banquette where the kids and the dog eat breakfast. Kids and dogs are the real quality control.
A buyer in the US had an angled breakfast bench 110 in (279 cm) across the front and 31.75 in (81 cm) deep, plus a small dog and a toddler. The workshop steered them off the 100% cotton stripes toward the washable linen, soft fabric and velvet charts, and because the bench sits at a table they chose a thinner 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) cushion. Which seat in your house takes the most wear?
Tufting and pools don't mix: every tuft is stitched through the cushion, and water finds its way in, even through outdoor fabric. Tufted or plain is an easy call outdoors.
Wind is the other thief. A buyer in the US from a windy spot ordered 33 x 30 x 4 in (84 x 76 x 10 cm) seats with 32 x 13 in (81 x 33 cm) wedge backs, thicker at the bottom, and ties to hold the lot down. Another, with an L-shaped concrete fire-pit bench, got two separate seat cushions instead of one L, so each cover zips off easily and sits snug.
A real project
A curved fire-pit bench, measured with a string
A buyer in the US had a curved stone bench around an outdoor fire pit and measured it the way my grandmother measured everything: with a piece of string. Bless them, that is a fine start. The workshop asked for the inner curve, the outer curve, the depth at several points, and the straight distance end to end, 142 in (361 cm) at the back and 117 in (297 cm) at the front.
From those numbers the true shape was drawn: a 245 in (622 cm) outer curve, a 208 in (528 cm) inner curve, 12 3/4 in (32 cm) deep and 3 in (7.5 cm) thick. At about 20 ft (6 m) long it became four matching segments for handling and storage. For your own curve, read chord and rise first.
Measured
Outer curve 245 in, inner curve 208 in, 12 3/4 in deep, chords 142 in and 117 in, 3 in thick, 4 pieces
What it taught
For a curve, send both arc lengths and the straight chords, so the exact shape can be rebuilt.

A Texas porch calendar
Spring: hail season. Keep a covered corner clear so the cushions stack in minutes.
Summer: flip and rotate cushions on a west-facing patio.
June 1 to November 30 on the coast: bring every cushion in when a storm heads your way.
After a Gulf downpour: unzip the cover and get the foam dry within 24 to 48 hours.
Winter: Dallas averages about 30 freezing nights a year. Store cushions dry, off the concrete.
A curved fire-pit bench cushion needs four measurements, not one: the outer curve, the inner curve, the depth and the straight chord from end to end.
Our patio has a solid roof over it. Is regular indoor fabric all right out there?
The workshop's answer
Yes, if the roof is closed and neither rain nor direct sun reaches the seat; linen, velvet and soft fabric are fine there, though not waterproof. For screened porches with pollen, dust and humidity, or open air, use outdoor fabric.
A common question
Two kids and a big dog share our banquette. Which fabric cleans up easiest?
The workshop's answer
Indoors, the soft fabric first: durable, smooth, it doesn't collect dust or lint and it wipes clean. Velvet is also easy to clean and pet-friendly, and there are water-resistant wipe-clean charts. Covers wash at 86°F (30°C).
A common question
Can outdoor cushions stay out on the patio all year, rain or shine?
The workshop's answer
The fabric is water-repellent and UV-resistant, but the foam isn't quick-dry and there's no mesh bottom as standard, so they shouldn't sit uncovered through storms and freezes. A covered patio or winter storage suits them best.
A common question
My outdoor sofa frame is 67.5 in long, 27.5 in deep and 21 in high at the back. What sizes do I order?
The workshop's answer
Three 22.5 x 27.5 x 4 in seats fill the frame, and three 22.5 x 17 x 4 in backs reach the 21 in (53 cm) frame height once they sit on the seats.

Questions buyers ask next
Where should patio cushions go when hail is in the forecast?
Somewhere covered and close: the garage, a shed or the back of the covered patio. Texas leads the country in hail insurance claims, so size cushions so one person can carry each one.
Which colors hold up best on a west-facing Texas patio?
Light and mid tones. Every outdoor fabric in the range is UV- and fade-resistant, but a west-facing patio takes the strongest afternoon sun. Dark shades also get hotter to sit on.
Is a dogtrot breezeway indoors or outdoors when choosing fabric?
Outdoors. The roof keeps off rain from above, but the open ends let wind-blown rain, dust and humidity through. Regular fabric belongs only where a solid roof keeps both rain and direct sun off the seat.
How do I keep patio cushions from blowing off in the wind?
Ties, sewn into the seams at the corners or the back in any position; ties on the back corners of outdoor cushions come free. Double piping can give back cushions enough structure to stay put.
