Two palm-print outdoor cushions, stacked, and the finishing that makes them a pair
Callum answers the practical questions first, then reads the terrace: a navy welt, long ties, and a stack that shows whether the cutter was consistent.
SaveThe quick answer
Hand-finished outdoor cushions show their quality in three places: piping taken from the darkest tone in the print, ties sewn at the back corners where the chair braces sit, and matching pads that stack flush. Order a seat and a backrest as two separate items, and check every length on the approval drawing before cutting starts.
Buyer questions first: three questions off the terrace
- A common question
Do you make washable outdoor cushions 6 inches thick for a custom bench?
The workshop's answerYes. Outdoor, washable cushions are made in any size, 6 in (15 cm) thick included. Send the full length and width first, and the shop recommends suitable outdoor fabrics from there.
- A common question
Does the price include both the seat cushion and the matching back cushion in the photo?
The workshop's answerNo, the price covers one cushion. For a set like the photo, add two items to the cart, a seat and a backrest, each in its own size, and write the color code in the personalization box.
- A common question
Can you put ties on my bench cushion and on the backrest too?
The workshop's answerYes, both can have ties. There is normally a small extra charge, though depending on the order the shop sometimes adds them free. On chair pads you can say exactly where they go, for example 4 1/2 in (11.5 cm) in from the back corners so they line up with the chair's braces.
Now, the reading
The bench that got three payments and one short cushion
A buyer in the US ordered an outdoor bench cushion without realizing the listing covered one piece. They ordered again for the back and ended up paying three times. The shop refunded the extra payment. That part was easy.
The hard part came later. The shop had sent a schematic, the buyer approved it, and one cushion arrived 23 in (58 cm) shorter than the buyer had meant it to be. The length on the drawing was the length that got cut. The shop pointed to the approved drawing and offered to make the correct length at production cost.
Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does a signed-off drawing. Before you approve one, read every number on it, not just the overall shape, and hold a tape against the real bench for each line. How many lengths are on yours?
Pinned by Callum: five marks on the terrace
Five pins, from the navy welt on the top pad to the bougainvillea that answers the blue.

- Stacked palm-print pads
Two pads of the same size sit flush on top of each other, a quick check that cutting and filling are consistent.
- Navy contrast piping
The navy welt takes the darkest leaf color and draws a sharp frame against the ivory sofa.
- Long fabric ties
Ties sewn at the back corners let the same pads be fastened to any chair frame on the terrace.
- White rattan arm
White wicker keeps the blue print as the only strong color on the sofa.
- Bougainvillea in clay pots
Pink flowers and terracotta give a warm answer to the cool blue fabric.

Where the hand-finishing shows
I cut sail canvas before I cut cushions, and the habit stuck. Look at the edges first, friend, and the middle last.
Start with the stack. Two slim palm-print pads sit flush on each other against the low rattan arm, and from the side they read as one block. That only works when both were cut to the same pattern and filled to the same height. A stack is the quickest honesty test for a pair.
Then the welt. The navy piping is lifted from the darkest leaf in the cobalt-and-white print. It outlines each pad against the ivory seat cushions behind without fighting the pattern. A white welt would have split the print from its own edge.
Then the ties. They hang long from the back corners, sewn where a chair's back braces usually sit, so the same pads fasten to any chair on the terrace. On a windy afternoon that is the difference between a cushion on the chair and a cushion in the pool.
The setting does the rest. Hard midday sun, white wicker that keeps the blue the only strong color, terracotta tiles and magenta bougainvillea in clay pots giving a warm answer to a cool print, and an agave on the low wall. The cloth for that light is outdoor acrylic. For where ties belong, read tie placement on chairs and swings; for welt color, matching, contrast or no piping. More sets live in outdoor cushions and patio and porch cushions.
Four checks before you approve an outdoor set
Count the pieces
A listing price covers one cushion. A seat and a back are two items, each in its own size.
Read every length
On the approval drawing, check each line against a tape on the real bench, not just the outline.
Place the ties
Say where they go, for example 4 1/2 in (11.5 cm) in from the back corners, so they meet the chair braces. The chair cushion builder helps you mark them.
Name the welt
Pick piping from the darkest tone in the print, by code, and write it in the personalization note.

Take the piping color on a patterned outdoor cushion from the darkest tone in the print, so the welt frames the pattern instead of competing with it.

Questions buyers ask next
Why is the piping navy on a blue and white palm print?
Navy is the darkest tone in the leaves, so the welt reads as part of the pattern and draws a sharp outline against the ivory sofa behind. A lighter welt would separate the edge from the print and make the pads look busier.
Where should ties go on an outdoor chair pad?
At the back corners, lined up with the chair's back braces or spindles. You can specify the inset, such as 4 1/2 in (11.5 cm) from each corner. Long ties let one pad fasten to different chair frames on the same patio.
How can I tell if a pair of custom cushions was cut consistently?
Stack them. Two pads of the same size should sit flush on each other, with edges and piping lined up all the way around. Any step at an edge means one was cut or filled differently from the other.
What does approving the drawing mean on a custom outdoor cushion?
Before cutting, the shop sends a schematic with every length. Approving it confirms those are the sizes to make, so a wrong number on the drawing becomes a wrong cushion. Check each line against the real bench before you say yes.
