Cushions for Florida and the Gulf Coast

Miami's noon UV Index still averages about 5 in January. Down here the sun never takes a season off, the air stays wet, and hurricane season runs six months. Build the cushion for that, and know where it goes when the wind comes.

The quick answer

Outdoor cushions in Florida need UV-resistant, water-repellent outdoor fabric, a plain non-tufted foam build and zip-off covers, plus a plan to bring them inside before storms. Screened lanais and pool cages count as outdoors, because humid air and blowing rain get through; indoor fabric belongs only in an air-conditioned Florida room. Light and mid tones don't bake in year-round sun.

Year-round sun, wet air and six months of storms

The sun comes first. Miami's average noon UV Index runs about 10.5 from May through July. A lanai cushion facing the sun fades every month of the year.

Water comes second. Miami gets about 67 in (171 cm) of rain a year, roughly two-thirds of it June through October, and Pensacola and Mobile get about as much. Morning humidity averages 82% to 88% along the coast. A soaked cushion won't dry overnight in that air, and foam that stays wet past a day or two is where mildew starts.

Then the storms. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and Florida has more recorded hurricane strikes than any other state. Rain doesn't negotiate. Neither does a hurricane, friend.

Lanais, Florida rooms and pool cages

Florida houses live out past the slider. A block ranch house opens onto a lanai, a covered patio that is often screened, and the pool sits under a screened pool cage. Older homes have a Florida room, a glassed sunroom on the back, and Gulf beach houses stand on pilings with the wind blowing straight through.

The seats follow the house: chaise and sunbed cushions on the pool deck, long pool benches, lanai sectionals, a porch swing, a daybed in the sunroom.

Here is the rule I'd tape to the slider. A screen stops bugs, not weather. Humid air, pollen and blowing rain get through, so a screened lanai or pool cage is outdoors as far as fabric goes. Only an air-conditioned Florida room gets indoor linen or velvet. Which of those rooms does your family actually sit in?

Fabric and build, from pool deck to Florida room

Anything the weather can reach is made from the outdoor fabrics or the water-repellent range. Sketch sizes in the bench cushion builder first.

The outdoor line is a UV-resistant, water-repellent woven polyester. There is no quick-dry foam or mesh bottom, so keep it covered and dry.

Lounge sets, old inserts and one final table

Big outdoor sets go wrong in the paperwork, not the sewing. A buyer in the US ordered four seat cushions with non-slip bases and four backrests without, then re-measured and sent one final table listing every piece. That table became the production reference. For any set where seats and backs look alike, do the same.

Another buyer in the US wanted six zippered covers for the existing inserts of two lounge chairs, the largest 31.5 x 31.5 x 3.5 in (80 x 80 x 9 cm), in a name-brand outdoor fabric. The workshop doesn't stock that brand, so it matched the look from its own outdoor range. Covers for existing foam are an honest way to refresh a tired lanai set.

A real project

Tufted by the pool? One family changed the plan

A family in the US wanted tufted floor-style cushions for three benches by the pool and the fire pit: one at 125 x 20.5 x 3 in (318 x 52 x 7.5 cm) and two at 86.75 x 20.5 x 3 in (220 x 52 x 7.5 cm). The workshop told them straight. Tufting lets water inside, even in outdoor fabric. It suggested plain, non-tufted foam cushions instead.

The 125 in bench was too long for one piece, so it was drawn in two. A year later the family came back for a quote on four plain pieces in outdoor fabric.

A tuft is a doorway for water. A plain cushion has none.

What it taught
Outdoors, choose non-tufted foam cushions, and split very long runs.

A Florida cushion year

  • Winter and spring: the sun still fades. Keep cushions under the lanai roof when nobody is using them.
  • June 1: hurricane season opens. Pick a dry indoor spot for every cushion now.
  • Summer storm days: after a soaking, unzip the cover and get the foam into moving air.
  • Near the beach: rinse covers and zippers with fresh water, then wash covers at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle.
  • Storm watch: Ready.gov's hurricane checklist says to bring in outside furniture. Cushions go first.

A wet Florida cushion has 24 to 48 hours to dry before mildew gets a foothold. Unzip the cover and get the foam into moving air.

Florida questions

  1. A common question

If I get one long cushion for the pool bench, will it crease when I fold it away?

    The workshop's answer

No. The foam is flexible, so a long cushion can be folded or rolled for storage without damage, and the cover can be made in water-repellent outdoor fabric. The bench can also take two long cushions, or one per seat.

  2. A common question

Does the outdoor fabric feel rubbery, like cheap waterproof cushions?

    The workshop's answer

No. It isn't a plastic, coated fabric; it feels like proper cloth, not a tarp. It is firmer than indoor upholstery, closer to a good sun-lounger cushion.

  3. A common question

It's very humid where we live. Will chenille survive outdoors, or will it mold?

    The workshop's answer

Chenille isn't recommended for permanent outdoor use, least of all in high humidity. The outdoor-performance fabrics resist moisture, mildew and mold far better, so order through the outdoor range.

  4. A common question

Are the outdoor cushions actually waterproof, or only water-resistant?

    The workshop's answer

Water-resistant, in practice. The outdoor range is water-repellent and handles showers and spills well, but it isn't a sealed, coated material. For a big patio order you can buy one cushion first to check the fit.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a screened lanai or pool cage indoors or outdoors for cushion fabric?

Outdoors. The screen keeps bugs out, but humid air, pollen, dust and blowing rain still reach the seat. Save indoor linen, velvet and soft fabric for an air-conditioned Florida room.

What should happen to pool cushions when a hurricane watch is posted?

They come inside. Ready.gov's hurricane checklist says to bring in outside furniture, and a loose cushion in a gale is a sail with no sheet. Size each piece so one person can carry it.

Does salt air hurt outdoor cushions at a beach house?

Salt spray is heaviest near breaking waves and drops off sharply over the first 300 to 3,000 ft (90 to 900 m) inland, though corrosion reaches further. No fabric is salt-proof. Rinse covers and zippers with fresh water.

Can an outdoor daybed come with bolsters in waterproof fabric?

Yes. A buyer in the US asked for a 52 x 28 x 4 in (132 x 71 x 10 cm) outdoor daybed with a back cushion and two cylinder side pillows in water-repellent outdoor fabric; outdoor colors differ from indoor velvet, so the closest water-repellent code was suggested.
