A Reading by CallumOutdoor & Water-Repellent Cushions
A saffron-striped outdoor bench cushion, put through a season of real life
Whitewash, bougainvillea, a bowl of lemons, and a striped cushion on hot masonry. Lovely on a still noon. I want to know how it does in August sun, a thunderstorm, a tipped glass and a wet dog.
SaveThe quick answer
A striped outdoor acrylic cushion on a masonry bench ages well with three habits: dappled shade, a water-resistant inner cover on the foam, and a dry place in the off-season. The fabric resists UV, but UV resistance protects the color, not the foam, and water-repellent cloth isn't waterproof, so no cushion should sit out in all weather.
Buyer questions: outdoor cloth and the budget question
- A common question
Do you have outdoor fabric, and can the same tufted style be made for outside?
The workshop's answerYes. There is a separate outdoor fabric range with its own color chart, including darker greens, and the same shapes are made in it. For cushions that live outside, that range is water-repellent and UV-resistant.
- A common question
My budget is lower than the quote. Is there any discount?
The workshop's answerSometimes, though the lever is mostly the order itself: size, fabric and extras such as piping set the price, so a smaller footprint or a different fabric family brings a quote down. Bulk orders have been quoted as one set, and on a tight budget the workshop has adjusted a quote once.
Now, the reading
Reading the bench on its best day
Friend, a patio photo is always taken on the best day of the year. My job is to picture the worst one.
Start with what's here. A whitewashed masonry bench, hard and deep, with an outdoor bench cushion running its full length and stopping just short of the rounded arm, so the whitewash frames it. The box edge carries no piping, and the stripe runs clean to the corners.
The stripe is saffron, burnt orange, cream and rust, and the bands run across the seat so every sitter gets the same warm band of color. It already holds every color in the scene: lemon, clay, rust tile. One mustard lumbar pulls the brightest band out as a solid, and that's all the styling a multi-stripe needs. The painted blue-and-white tile table is the only cool note, which makes the yellows look hotter still. The clay amphora on the ledge and the lemon tree in its terracotta pot tie the rust stripes down to the floor tiles.
The daily life test, one hazard at a time
Sun. The cloth is an outdoor acrylic made to resist UV, and the bougainvillea overhead helps more than you'd think. Dappled shade is the cheapest color insurance there is.
Rain. Rain doesn't negotiate. The foam inside is the part to protect. Give it a water-resistant inner cover, and remember the outdoor cloth is water-repellent, not waterproof, so even a cushion that lives outside needs a dry spell. Our Pattern on water-repellent vs waterproof sorts out the two.
Spills, kids and paws. Lemons, olives and terracotta mean juice, oil and muddy feet. A busy stripe forgives a faint mark far better than a pale solid would. Keep our stain first aid handy for the first ten minutes.
Winter. Bring the cushion in, dry, before the wet season sets in, and spring starts easy. Copying this on a concrete or brick bench in the Southwest? Pick a stripe that holds your floor color and let one solid pillow echo its brightest band. What color is the floor under your bench?
Pinned by Callum: five marks on a whitewashed patio
Five pins mark the sun-stripe seat, the mustard lumbar, the clay amphora, the painted tile table and the bougainvillea that shades it all.

- Sun-stripe seat cushion
Stripes run across the seat so each sitter gets the same warm band of color.
- Mustard lumbar pillow
The pillow pulls the brightest stripe out as a solid, a simple way to style any multi-stripe.
- Clay amphora
Terracotta on the ledge links the rust stripes to the floor tiles.
- Painted tile table
Blue-and-white tiles are the only cool note, which makes the yellows look hotter.
- Bougainvillea canopy
Overhead blossom gives dappled shade that helps any outdoor fabric keep its color longer.

Eight thick pallet cushions and a budget that didn't stretch
A buyer messaged the workshop wanting tufted cushions for a set of outdoor pallet sofas. Eight pieces: two at 39.4 x 31.5 x 5.9 in (100 x 80 x 15 cm), two at 47.2 x 23.6 x 5.9 in (120 x 60 x 15 cm), two at 39.4 x 15.7 x 7.9 in (100 x 40 x 20 cm) and two at 47.2 x 15.7 x 5.9 in (120 x 40 x 15 cm).
The workshop sent two outdoor fabric ranges and a quote. The quote landed far above the budget the buyer had in mind, and the order never happened.
Nobody did anything wrong. Thick outdoor sets add up fast, the way a small leak fills a bilge. Ask for a ballpark before you fall for a fabric. The pallet sofa cushions sketch has more on sets like this one, and patio and porch cushions gathers the rest.

If an outdoor bench cushion stays out through winter rain, give the foam a water-resistant inner cover; UV-resistant fabric guards the color, not the foam.

Questions buyers ask next
Will a striped outdoor cushion fade in full sun?
Outdoor acrylic is made to resist UV, so it holds its color well, but shade still helps. A vine, a pergola or an umbrella that breaks the midday sun keeps any outdoor fabric brighter for longer.
Can an outdoor bench cushion stay outside all winter?
Not ideally. The outdoor cloth is water-repellent, not waterproof, so add a water-resistant inner cover on the foam and bring the cushion into a dry place when the wet season sets in.
Which way should stripes run on a long patio bench cushion?
Across the seat, from front to back, so every person sitting gets the same band of color. Stripes running the long way put one color under one guest and a different color under the next.
How do I style a multi-color striped outdoor cushion?
Pull the brightest band out as a solid pillow. Here one mustard lumbar repeats the saffron stripe, while clay pots and terracotta tiles pick up the rust. Keep patterned pillows off a stripe that already carries four colors.
