Stacked herringbone stripe outdoor cushions on a rattan terrace sofa
Four cushions stacked on a sofa on a bright morning. That stack tells you whether a set was cut to be sat on all afternoon.
Matching seat cushions stacked on a rattan sofa show how evenly the stripe repeats from one piece to the next.
The quick answer
Outdoor bench cushions for long sitting need a box seat thick enough to carry you, a thinner back that leaves seat depth free, and ties or a non-slip base so nothing creeps. One real outdoor pair put a 48 x 24 x 5 in (122 x 61 x 13 cm) seat under a 48 x 18 x 3 in (122 x 46 x 8 cm) back.
What a stack of cushions gives away
A stack of cushions is an honest witness. Pile four on top of one another and every flaw in the cutting shows: a box half an inch shallower than its neighbor, a piping line that wanders, a stripe that turns the wrong way.
This stack on a bent-rattan sofa passes. Every box is the same depth, so the edges line up. The piping falls at the same height on each piece. The gray and cream herringbone stripe runs the same direction on all four, and on the seat cushion below them too. Read together, they look like one run of fabric, which is what they are.
The colors suit the place. A muted gray-taupe weave sits easy against weathered rattan and a white rendered wall, and it won't shout under a hard coastal sun. Terracotta pots of olive and herbs bring the only warm note. The sea beyond the parapet does the rest.
A stack says something about the owner, too. Those are spare pads, ready to come indoors when the weather turns.
Pinned by Callum: a terrace sofa at morning
Five pins, from the top of the stack to the terracotta pots and the sea beyond the parapet.

- Top of the stack
Each box is the same depth, so the stack lines up edge to edge.
- Aligned piping lines
Piping on every cushion falls at the same height, a sign of consistent cutting.
- Sofa seat cushion
The seat uses the same stripe direction as the stacked pieces.
- Rattan frame
Weathered rattan matches the gray-taupe weave.
- Terracotta and sea
Clay pots bring the only warm color to the terrace.

Built for the long sit: reading, working, staying out till dusk
Comfort over three hours is a different job from comfort over ten minutes. Three things decide it.
Seat before back. The seat carries you, so it gets the thickness. The back only has to meet your shoulders. In one outdoor pair from a past order, a 5 in (13 cm) seat sat under a 3 in (8 cm) back. The thinner back leaves more of the 24 in (61 cm) seat depth to sit on, and that's where your legs want to be by hour two.
Nothing that walks. A cushion that creeps toward the edge all afternoon wears you out. Ties at the corners hold it to the frame; a non-slip base holds it by grip. Pick one, or both. Here's how to stop a cushion sliding.
Fabric that shrugs off a shower. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Outdoor acrylic makes the promise: water beads on the surface and rolls off. Know which one you're buying. The water-repellent vs waterproof guide spells out the difference, and our outdoor cushions show the full range of shapes.
Where do you sit longest outside, friend: morning coffee or the last light?
Six covers for cushions that already existed
A buyer in the US had two identical outdoor lounge chairs, three cushions each, and inserts that only needed new covers. They wanted six zippered covers to slip over the old inserts, plus matching throw pillow covers, in a specific name-brand outdoor fabric with contrast piping.
The sizes were clear: 31.5 x 31.5 x 3.5 in (80 x 80 x 9 cm), 26.5 x 26.5 x 3.5 in (67 x 67 x 9 cm) and 12 x 28 x 3.5 in (30.5 x 71 x 9 cm), two of each, with pillows at 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) and 20 x 20 in (51 x 51 cm).
The shop doesn't stock that brand, but it has its own outdoor range, so it asked for photos and a sized drawing. When the buyer offered to send their own fabric, the shop explained it can't take fabric in, and offered to match the color from a photo instead.
Replacement cushion covers for existing foam can be made from measurements alone. Keep the inserts; change the skin.

Buyer questions: ties without piping, no hook-and-loop, and whose fabric
- A common question
Can you make waterproof outdoor cushions with ties and no piping?
The workshop's answerYes, from the outdoor water-resistant fabric range. One pair was quoted with a 48 x 24 x 5 in (122 x 61 x 13 cm) seat and a 48 x 18 x 3 in (122 x 46 x 8 cm) back, no piping, and ties at the two corners of the long sides. Garden floor cushions can use the same outdoor fabrics.
- A common question
Could you sew on hook-and-loop tape, the Velcro kind, instead of ties to keep cushions on the frame?
The workshop's answerVelcro isn't offered at the moment. Ties can go wherever you want them, and a non-slip bottom is another way to stop cushions moving.
- A common question
Can I send you my own fabric, or pick a name-brand outdoor acrylic?
The workshop's answerNo. Fabric is chosen from the workshop's own outdoor range, and the name-brand acrylic isn't used. There are close to 200 outdoor options, so there's usually one close to what you had in mind.
An outdoor seat cushion for long sitting takes the thickness and the back does not: a 5 in seat under a 3 in back leaves room for your legs.

Questions buyers ask next
Can I order new covers for outdoor cushions I already own?
Yes. Replacement covers can be made from measurements alone, with zippers so they slip over your existing inserts. Send the length, width and thickness of each insert and a photo of the set; two chairs with three cushions each came to six covers.
Which way should the stripe run on matching outdoor cushions?
The same way on every piece, and it's worth asking for when you order a set. When stripe direction, box depth and piping height all match, separate cushions read as one run of fabric, stacked or side by side.
Is outdoor acrylic waterproof?
Outdoor acrylic is water-repellent: water beads on the surface and runs off. That is not the same as waterproof, which keeps water out completely. Check which one a listing promises before leaving cushions out through a storm.
