Sage leaf-line outdoor cushions on a rattan sofa, and why the piping matches
Callum reads a green outdoor set on warm cane and clay tile, and makes the case for self piping when the pattern is already doing the work.

The quick answer
For a patterned outdoor bench cushion, self piping cut from the same fabric is usually the right edge: it keeps the box crisp without drawing a second line across the pattern. Choose contrast piping on plain cloth when you want the outline to show, and no piping for a soft, casual edge. Back cushions are ordered as separate pieces.
Swatch strip: two greens against clay and cane
- Sage green#A3B18AThe ground of the cloth. Cool against warm cane.
- Forest green#2F4F38The fine under-stripe. Hides dust and small marks up close.
- Leaf-line white#F1EFE6Big leaf lines that read from across the patio.
- Natural rattan#C69C62The warm frame that makes the greens look fresher.
- Worn terracotta#B4613FThe clay floor, the natural counterweight to green.
Self, contrast or none: why this edge matches
Every edge on a cushion is a decision. On this rattan two-seater it was the right one.
Three ways to finish the edge of an outdoor bench cushion:
- Self piping. A cord wrapped in the same cloth. Crisp edge, no second line. Right for a pattern like this leaf-line, where a white or dark welt would cut the leaves off at the border.
- Contrast piping. A cord in another color. It draws the outline. Right for plain cloth, or a cushion that has to stand out from a pale frame.
- No piping. A plain sewn seam. Softer, rounder, more casual.
This set took the first. The seats are thick box cushions that come up level with the top of the rattan arm, so the frame looks full. The front edge is self piped. The box stays sharp and the white leaf lines run straight over the seam. The back cushions carry the same pattern placement as the seats, so the leaves line up top to bottom.
The warm materials do the rest. Natural rattan and worn terracotta are honey and clay. Sage and forest green sit against them like shade on a hot afternoon. The white leaves are big enough to read from across the patio. The fine forest stripe underneath hides dust up close.
If you're re-covering rattan cushions, friend, ask for zippers along the back edge so the foam comes out and the covers wash. The three finishes are laid side by side in piping: matching, contrast or none. More frames live in outdoor cushions, and the cloth in outdoor acrylic.
What's your frame made of: warm cane, teak, or cool metal?

Eight cushions in a parcel that looked too small
A buyer got in touch for eight outdoor cushions. Four at 31.5 x 34 in (80 x 86 cm), four at 31.5 x 27.5 in (80 x 70 cm), all 4 in (10 cm) thick, in a beige outdoor fabric, S30. Set pricing brought that quote's total down, and it included shipping.
The cushions were vacuum-packed. Eight cushions pressed flat make a parcel that looks like it holds two. When the courier came, the buyer took one look and turned it away. Too small to be the order.
It was the order. The workshop took the problem up with the courier and promised a replacement if the parcel went missing.
The lesson sits on the workshop's side of the table too: warn buyers that vacuum-packed cushions arrive in small parcels. If yours looks too small, open it anyway and give the foam its first days to come back.
- Sizes

The lesson: Vacuum-packed cushions arrive in small parcels; open the box before you refuse it.
Buyer questions: zipper sides, a van mattress and backrests
- A common question
Can you make a Japanese-style floor cushion for outdoors, in a white outdoor fabric, with the zipper on the long side?
The workshop's answerYes. A custom outdoor floor cushion, for example 32.25 x 44 in (82 x 112 cm), can be made in white outdoor fabric with the zipper along the 44 in side. A zippered outdoor version is made without tufting, but send a photo of the edge you like, such as French seams or hand-finished sides, and the workshop will copy it.
- A common question
Could you make a corduroy cover for the foam mattress in my camper van?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop has quoted a corduroy cover for a cold-foam van mattress of about 27.5 x 79 x 4 in (70 x 200 x 10 cm). Send the foam's exact size and the cover is cut to it.
- A common question
Does the price on the listing include the backrest, and how do I add back cushions to my cart?
The workshop's answerThe price for each size covers the seat cushion only. Order every back cushion as its own item on the same listing, with its own measurements, and write 'backrest' in the note. One seat plus two back pillows is three items, and the workshop makes them as a matching set.

Questions buyers ask next
When should patio cushions have contrast piping?
On plain or lightly textured fabric, or when the cushion needs an outline against a frame of a similar color. On a busy print a contrast welt competes with the pattern and makes the edge look like a border.
Why do green cushions suit rattan and terracotta?
Rattan and terracotta are warm honey and clay tones. Cool greens sit on the other side of that temperature, so the cushion looks fresh instead of melting into the frame, and the clay floor balances the green.
How thick should a seat cushion be on a rattan sofa?
A good starting point is the height from the seat deck to the top of the arm, so the cushion comes up level with it, as here. The frame then looks filled rather than half empty.
Can seat and back cushions keep the same pattern placement?
Ask for it in your order note. Say that the pattern should line up from back to seat, and send a photo of your frame, so the leaves or stripes run the same way on every piece of the set.
