Lemon leaf-print outdoor cushions on a wicker loveseat, from ten feet and ten inches

A patio gets read twice. Once from the kitchen door, once from the seat itself. This loveseat passes both, and the weather gets a vote in each.

The quick answer

A bold print on an outdoor bench cushion or loveseat works when it reads as one clean block from 10 feet (3 m) away. Use one long seat cushion with no center gap, matching back cushions and self piping cut from the same print, and keep everything around it neutral. Up close, choose water-repellent, UV-resistant outdoor fabric and keep the cushions under cover through rain and winter.

From ten feet

Stand at the pergola post and squint. You don't see leaves. You see a yellow block on a gray frame. That's how a patio gets read: from the kitchen door, from the lawn, from next door's deck.

At that distance three things count. One long seat cushion spans the loveseat, so there's no dark gap down the middle. Two back cushions share the print, so the frame reads as one piece. And everything around the print keeps quiet: gray wicker, a weathered wood side table, a cream rug, plain green palms and a fiddle-leaf fig. The brass lantern is the only other warm note, and it's small.

Bold print, calm neighbors. That's the whole ten-foot rule. What does your patio look like from the back door?

The ten covers, as measured

The buyer's list as sent: covers only, for inserts they already owned.

PiecesSizeSide panelNote
725 × 15.5 in (64 × 39 cm)4.25 in (11 cm)piping and zipper
276.5 × 30.5 in (194 × 77 cm)5.5 in (14 cm)rounded back corners
147 × 15 in (119 × 38 cm)5.5 in (14 cm)piping and zipper

Side panels measured seam to seam on the existing inserts. For the rounded corners, the one extra number is how far from each corner the curve begins.

Five pins, near and far

Five spots worth walking up to.

  1. Single long seat

One seat cushion spans the loveseat so there's no gap in the middle.

  2. Left back cushion

Two backs let each person adjust their own.

  3. Piping in the print

Same-fabric piping keeps a bold pattern tidy at the edges.

  4. Brass lantern

The only warm metal, matching the yellow.

  5. Fiddle-leaf fig

Plain green planting lets the print stay the star.

From ten inches

Now kneel down. Up close the print turns into lemon leaves on white, and the edge starts to matter. The piping is cut from the same print, so the pattern runs right into the seam and the box edge stays tidy. Contrast piping would draw a line around every cushion, and from the lawn you'd see three outlines instead of one sofa.

Up close you also see what the weather sees. The outdoor fabric is water-repellent and UV-resistant, and it feels like cloth, not a tarp. Rain doesn't negotiate, though, friend. A pergola's slats give shade, not shelter. Outdoor cushions like these do best on a covered porch or stored for winter, not sitting out uncovered through rain and snow.

A real project

Ten covers for inserts that were still good

A buyer in the US had an outdoor sectional and benches with sound inserts and tired covers. They needed ten new covers with piping and zippers: seven at 25 × 15.5 × 4.25 in, two big pieces at 76.5 × 30.5 × 5.5 in with rounded back corners, and one outdoor bench cushion cover at 47 × 15 × 5.5 in.

They measured each boxed side panel seam to seam and wanted the same full, tailored look. The workshop took the 5.5 in panel as given, nothing added. Then it asked what mattered: where each curve begins, the bolster sizes, and whether the pillows and bolsters needed inserts. Same drill as any order for covers on foam you already own.

Sizes
7 × 25 × 15.5 × 4.25 in; 2 × 76.5 × 30.5 × 5.5 in; 1 × 47 × 15 × 5.5 in

The lesson: Measure boxed panels seam to seam and let full inserts crown the top; don't enlarge the panel.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Do you carry Sunbrella, or something like it?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop doesn't carry the Sunbrella brand. It uses its own outdoor performance fabrics in the same class, weather-resistant with removable, washable covers, in more than 150 colors and patterns. Send the codes you like and close-up photos come back so you can match.

  2. A common question

Does the price include the back cushions, and how do I add them?

    The workshop's answer

The size price covers the seat only. Order each back cushion as its own item through the same listing, with its own measurements, and write 'backrest' in the note. One seat and two backs make three items, made as a matching set.

  3. A common question

Is there a discount on a big set of outdoor cushions?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Large sets get an extra discount on top of the listed price; a sofa set of six seats and six backs once came with a seventh back cushion free. Ordering in pairs doesn't lower the making cost, though.

From 10 feet, a bold outdoor print reads as one block of color. Keep the piping in the same print and a loveseat looks like one piece.

Questions buyers ask next

Why one long seat cushion on a loveseat instead of two?

One piece spans the frame with no gap in the middle, so the seat reads as a whole from across the yard. Two separate back cushions still let each person settle in on their own side.

Will a bright yellow outdoor print fade?

The outdoor fabrics are UV-resistant and made to hold color in sun, unlike indoor cloth, which has limited UV resistance. Shade and winter storage stretch the life of any strong color.

Can a tufted cushion go out on the patio?

Better not. Tufting opens holes through the cover, so a tufted cushion lets water in even when it's made in outdoor fabric. A plain, foam-filled box cushion in outdoor fabric is the right choice outside.
