A charcoal crackle outdoor bench cushion by the fire pit, seen from ten feet and from one
I wrote this one from the far side of the fire. What reads across a patio at dusk is not what you see when you sit down with a glass in your hand.
SaveThe quick answer
An outdoor bench cushion by a fire pit should work at two distances: a charcoal and white crackle reads as one calm dark slab across the patio at dusk, while up close it hides ash, soot and spilled drinks. Cut it to the top of the cedar cap and leave a strip of wood showing on each side so it looks framed.

Dear friend,
From the far side of the fire
Stand ten feet back from this bench at blue hour and you don't see a pattern at all. You see a charcoal slab on a cedar cap, a pale knot of knitting at one end, and firelight. That is the ten-foot view, and it is what the neighbors see from their deck.
Walk up close and the cushion changes character. The charcoal breaks into a black-and-white crackle, fine and irregular, like old glaze. That pattern has a job. Ash drifts, a spark leaves a dark speck, somebody sets a glass down wrong. On a crackle it all disappears. On a plain pale cushion by a fire, none of it would.
The cushion is a thick box shape in outdoor acrylic with self piping, and it leaves a strip of cedar showing on each side. From across the patio, that strip is the detail that reads. It frames the seat like a tray and tells the eye the cushion was cut for this bench, not dropped on it.
Texture does the work color can't at dusk, when colors fade anyway: chunky knit, a velvet-look pillow, rough stone, smooth slate. It is the same thinking behind our fire pit bench cushions and any outdoor cushion meant for patio and porch evenings.
What does your bench look like from the back door after sunset?
Pinned by Callum: the stone bench at blue hour
Five pins, from the crackle cushion to the glow of the fire pit behind it.

- Charcoal crackle cushion
The dark crackle pattern hides soot, ash and spilled drinks by the fire.
- Slate board and whisky
A slate board gives glasses a flat, stable base on a soft cushion.
- Black pillow
Black on charcoal is tone-on-tone, so the seat looks moody rather than busy.
- Cream knit throw
The chunky cream knit is the only light mass, pulling the eye to the end of the seat.
- Fire pit glow
Orange firelight is the only warm color needed against gray stone and charcoal fabric.

What reads across the patio, and what shows only when you sit
| Detail | From ten feet | From one foot |
|---|---|---|
| Charcoal crackle cushion | One calm dark slab | A fine black-and-white crackle that hides ash and spills |
| Cedar strip on each side | A clean frame, like a tray | Proof the cushion was cut to the cap, not the wall below |
| Cream knit throw | The only light mass, pulling the eye to the end of the seat | Chunky knit against smooth cloth |
| Black pillow | Nearly invisible, tone on tone | A velvet-look sheen against the matte crackle |
| Slate board | A dark rectangle on the seat | A flat, stable base for two tumblers of whisky and squares of dark chocolate |
| Fire pit | The only warm color in the scene | Orange light on gray stone and charcoal cloth |
Eleven covers, and the seams we don't seal
A buyer got in touch with good foam already in hand and a long list: eleven replacement covers for an outdoor couch, dining armchairs, stools, button-tufted high backs and slanted footstools. They asked for fully waterproof fabric with sealed seams and mesh vents.
The workshop sent its water-repellent outdoor neutrals, cream, beige, taupe and oatmeal, and a sample pack whose cost comes off the order. It was straight about the rest: sealed seams and mesh vents are not offered.
The buyer thought it over and settled, happily, on the standard water-repellent outdoor canvas. Their cushions go into storage every winter anyway. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. With a dry shed for the cold months, the promise was plenty.
- Sizes
- 11 replacement covers for existing foam
The lesson: Water-repellent outdoor fabric plus winter storage beats paying for marine-grade sealing.
Buyer questions: matching squares, an itemized invoice and a cream pair
- A common question
Can you make square outdoor pillows to match my outdoor bench cushion?
The workshop's answerYes. Square cushions in outdoor fabric are ordered through the outdoor floor cushion listing, or the workshop makes a custom listing for them. For anything that lives outside it insists on outdoor fabric; patterned ones such as HM28 with HM5 piping have been confirmed for outdoor use.
- A common question
Can the workshop send me a formal invoice that lists every item?
The workshop's answerYes. Ask for a formal commercial invoice that itemizes each piece and its value. If a figure on an invoice doesn't match the amount you paid, the workshop prepares a corrected one.
- A common question
How long do custom cushions for an outdoor sofa and footstool take from start to finish?
The workshop's answerFor a cream pair, 33 x 19 3/4 in and 43 1/4 x 19 3/4 in (84 x 50 and 110 x 50 cm), the total processing time from making to delivery was 7 to 10 days.

Questions buyers ask next
Which outdoor cushion pattern hides ash and soot near a fire pit?
A dark, irregular pattern such as a charcoal and white crackle. Ash, soot and dark marks disappear into it, while a plain pale cushion shows every speck. From a distance the crackle still reads as one calm dark color.
Should an outdoor cushion cover the whole top of a stone bench?
Not necessarily. On this stacked-stone bench the cushion sits on the cedar cap and leaves a strip of wood on each side, which frames it like a tray. Measure the cap itself, not the stone wall underneath.
Do outdoor cushion covers need sealed seams if they're stored every winter?
One buyer who first wanted sealed seams and mesh vents settled on standard water-repellent outdoor canvas, because the cushions go into storage each winter. The workshop does not offer sealed seams or mesh vents on its covers.
Fair winds — Callum
P.S. Choose the color for a fire pit seat at dusk, not at noon. That is the hour the bench actually lives in.
