A Sand Outdoor Bench Cushion on Teak, and Where the Money Goes
Weathered teak, a gray deck, a lawn and a picket fence. One plain sand cushion that will still look right in September. These are the notes.
SaveThe quick answer
For an outdoor bench cushion that lasts, spend on the part the weather hits: a UV-resistant outdoor fabric in a mid-light tone like sand, which shows pollen and fading less than a dark color. Save on what you can carry inside, such as pillows and throws. Under a covered porch with no rain or direct sun, indoor-fabric piping is acceptable.
Deck notes, cloudy afternoon
Cloudy summer afternoon. Fresh-cut grass. A weathered teak bench on a gray timber deck, facing a lawn and a picket fence, and one plain sand cushion. That is the whole plan, and it is a good one.
The cushion covers the full seat and stops at the arms. Slim profile, box edge, self piping. It does not try to be a sofa, so the bench still looks like a bench. Sand sits halfway between the silver of old teak and the green of the lawn, which is why nothing in the frame fights.
Everything else can walk. A navy lumbar pillow is the single strong color, and it answers the shadowed window trim on the white clapboard. A white linen throw over the arm softens the hardest edge of the bench for cool evenings. A mug and a paperback show the scale: three seats, full length. Worn garden clogs and a terracotta pot of oregano make it a real back-deck spot, not a catalog page.
The arithmetic behind it: Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does July sun, so the fabric that meets them daily is where the money goes. A UV-resistant outdoor acrylic in a mid-light tone still looks like itself after a season; a dark ground shows every week of fade. The savings live in what you can carry. Under a real roof even the piping can be an indoor cloth, and the covered porch Pattern explains when that holds. The outdoor cushions hub lists the builds, the patio and porch room shows them at home, and winter storage keeps the second season as good as the first. Honest question, friend: does your bench take afternoon sun, or does it sit under the eaves?
Five pins on a teak deck bench
Five pins, from the sand cushion to the garden clogs, mark which pieces stay out all summer and which ones come inside.

- Sand bench cushion
A plain sand color sits halfway between the silver teak and the green lawn.
- Navy lumbar pillow
Navy is the single strong accent, and it echoes the shadowed window trim of the house.
- Linen throw on arm
A white throw over the arm softens the hardest edge of the bench.
- Mug and book
Everyday objects show the scale: this is a full three-seat bench.
- Garden clogs
The clogs make it a real back-deck spot rather than a showroom.

The ledger: spend here, save here
| Item | Spend or save | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Main fabric | Spend | It takes the sun and rain every day; choose a UV-resistant outdoor fabric |
| Color | Choose, don't pay | A mid-light sand hides pollen and fading better than a dark ground |
| Piping under a roof | Save | Indoor fabric is acceptable where no rain or direct sun reaches |
| Pillows and throws | Save | Removable; carry them in when rain is due, change the look next year |
| Back ties | Spend | Two ties on the back keep a bench cushion from walking |
| Stripe direction | Free | Costs nothing to write down, a remake to get wrong |
One bench, two chairs, stripes running two ways
One buyer wrote in with a patio set: one bench cushion at 59 x 19.7 x 4 in (150 x 50 x 10 cm), with piping and two ties on the back, and two chair cushions at 29.5 x 20 x 3 in (75 x 51 x 7.6 cm). All three in a striped outdoor fabric.
Here is the part they got right. They told the workshop the stripes should run along the length on the bench and across the width on the chairs, just as in their example photo. Same fabric, opposite directions, because a bench is long and a chair seat is nearly square.
Had they written only 'stripes, please', somebody would have had to guess. State the direction for each cushion, separately, in writing. The stripe direction Pattern has the drawings.
Buyer questions: indoor piping, cream or white, and matching backs
- A common question
The piping color I love is an indoor fabric. Can I use it on outdoor cushions that live on a covered terrace?
The workshop's answerIndoor fabrics aren't recommended out in the open, but a covered terrace with no rain or direct sun is a different case, so yes. Order through the outdoor listing, since the outdoor fabric is the higher-value part and sets the price, and write 'piping:' plus the fabric code in the personalization note.
- A common question
Is this outdoor fabric a bright white, or more of a natural cream?
The workshop's answerM-7 and M-19 have a soft cream background, not bright white. Among the solids, S-09 leans toward stark white, while S-29 and S-30 are more beige. To match an existing cushion, S-09 was the closest option. Batches can differ very slightly in shade.
- A common question
Do you also make back cushions for an outdoor sofa and chairs?
The workshop's answerYes. There is a ready listing for bench cushions with backrests, so the seat and back cushions are ordered together through it.
On the cutting table: the deck bench

An outdoor bench cushion earns its money in the fabric that faces the sun. Pillows, throws and piping under a roof are where you save.

Questions buyers ask next
Is a sand outdoor cushion easier to live with than a navy one?
Usually, yes. After a season outside, sand will not show pollen or sun-fade as obviously as a dark color. Keep navy and other strong colors in removable pillows, where fading matters less and the look is easy to change.
Which outdoor bench pieces should come inside when rain is forecast?
The removable ones: lumbar pillows and throws. The bench cushion in outdoor fabric is built for the weather, while pillows and linen throws are the pieces you carry in, which is also why they are the place to save.
Do stripes on a bench cushion and matching chair cushions run the same way?
Not necessarily. On one patio set the stripes ran along the length of the bench and across the width of the two chairs. Say which way the stripes should run for every piece, separately, before production.
