Custom cushions for Icelandic homes, summer houses and hot tub decks

Iceland's lowlands see winds of 18 m/s, about 40 mph, on 10 to 20 days a year. Build the deck cushion for those days and the rest are easy.

The quick answer

Custom cushions in Iceland have to handle wind first, then wet: on decks and beside a hot tub, use water-repellent outdoor fabric, quick-drying construction, ties at the back corners and cushions one person can carry inside. Indoors, geothermally heated rooms are warm and dry, so linen or corduroy window seats do well through a Reykjavík December with about 13 hours of sun.

18 m/s on the deck, 155 wet days a year

Reykjavík's climate is subpolar oceanic. The Icelandic Met Office's 1991–2020 normals give it 34.5 in (876 mm) of precipitation on about 155 days a year and 77.8% average humidity. July days reach 59°F (14.9°C). January nights drop to 29°F (−1.7°C).

The wind is the headline. In the lowlands it reaches 18 m/s (about 40 mph) on 10 to 20 days a year; in the highlands, on more than 50. The strongest gust on record is 74.2 m/s, about 166 mph.

For a cushion that means three things. Wind lifts it. Rain soaks it. Cool, damp air dries it slowly. Rain doesn't negotiate, friend, so build for the worst day: ties, fast-drying foam, and a plan to carry it in. The same drill works in Newfoundland.

The hot tub bench: splash, steam, then a cold wind

If your summer house has a hot tub on the deck, the bench beside it has the hardest job on the property. Wet skin, dripping towels, splash, and a cold wind to finish it off.

Build that cushion like a boat cushion. A cover in outdoor acrylic or a water-repellent membrane. A thin core that drains; see dry-fast foam. Ties at both back corners. A zipper, so the cover comes off and dries on its own.

Water-repellent sheds splash and showers. It is not waterproof. A soaked cushion still stands on edge to dry, and the tie placement Pattern shows where the ties earn their keep.

Corrugated iron outside, geothermal heat inside

Old Reykjavík is full of timber houses clad in corrugated iron, often painted bright colors. The iron came in the early 20th century, when timber was scarce and wood was banned in urban areas after great fires in Reykjavík and Akureyri.

Inside, it's warm. At least 90% of Icelandic homes are heated with geothermal energy. In Reykjavík, the water that heats homes then runs through pipes under streets and sidewalks at 86°F (30°C) to melt snow and ice.

Warm, dry rooms are kind to indoor cushions, and they dry wet covers fast when the deck cushions come in soaked. The entry bench is another story: wet boots and parkas. Performance fabric, a washable cover and a non-slip base. See mudroom and entry benches.

Out of town, Iceland had about 13,000 summer houses in 2018. Wood, a deck, and cushions that wait out the winter.

Picked for Iceland

A real project

An address the courier didn't recognize, and one flat pillow

A buyer in Iceland ordered a modular floor sofa. First squall: the courier flagged her address as incorrect. The workshop asked her to confirm it with the carrier directly. The parcel went on to a local delivery partner and arrived. The metal bars came separately, under their own tracking number.

Second squall: after unpacking, one back pillow stayed flat while the rest filled out. Vacuum-packed foam takes time. The workshop asked her to give it a couple of days and promised a replacement if it didn't recover.

Two lessons, both about patience. Confirm an unusual address format with the carrier before it matters. Judge compressed cushions after a few days, not in the first hour.

What it taught
Give compressed cushions a few days before judging, and confirm unusual address formats with the carrier.

Midnight sun, noon twilight: the window seat

In June the Reykjavík sun never sinks more than 5° below the horizon. From December 2 to January 10, daylight lasts less than five hours. Sunshine runs to 189.5 hours in June and 12.6 in December.

A window seat sees both seasons. In summer, long low evening sun works on the top face; turn and rotate the cushion. In winter it is the brightest seat in the house at noon.

For color, take a cue from the painted iron. A calm body, oat or slate, and one bright line of piping: harbor red, sea green, mustard. Start with how to measure a window seat.

Gale drill for deck cushions

  • Gale in the forecast: every deck cushion comes inside. Ties are for breezy days.
  • After rain or a hot tub evening: unzip, stand cushions on edge, and get them dry within 24 to 48 hours, the EPA's window for stopping mold.
  • Near the sea: rinse zippers with fresh water now and then. Salt spray is heaviest near breaking waves.
  • Once a season: wash covers at 86°F (30°C), gentle cycle, no bleach, air dry indoors.
  • Closing the summer house: cushions home to a heated room, or stored dry, off the floor, in breathable bags.
  • Spring: check ties and zippers before the first warm evening outside.

On an Icelandic deck, anything loose is a sail. Tie it, or carry it in.

Buyer questions: ties, stripes, covers and addresses

  1. A common question

Can you add ties to an outdoor bench cushion and set the stripe direction?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. One order had a 59 x 19.7 x 4 in (150 x 50 x 10 cm) cushion with piping and two ties at the back, and two 29.5 x 20 x 3 in (75 x 51 x 7.5 cm) cushions, all in outdoor fabric. The stripes ran along the length of the long cushion and across the width of the short ones, as specified.

  2. A common question

Can I use the ticking stripe for deck cushions that stay out all year?

    The workshop's answer

No. The ticking stripe is 100% cotton and isn't suitable outdoors. Use the outdoor linen-look fabrics instead: UV-resistant, water-repellent and in natural tones.

  3. A common question

Can you quote a mixed outdoor set of seat pads, bench pads and lounger pads, and what if I only need covers?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes. One set of 17 pieces, four 18 x 18 x 2.5 in (46 x 46 x 6 cm) seat pads, three 21.75 x 18.5 x 2.5 in (55 x 47 x 6 cm) bench pads, lounger pads of 75.5 x 23.5 x 2 in (192 x 60 x 5 cm) and 74.75 x 19.75 x 2 in (190 x 50 x 5 cm), and eight 19.25 x 17 in (49 x 43 cm) cushions, got a bundle price. Covers only, over the buyer's own foam, came to roughly a quarter less.

  4. A common question

Can you deliver to a PO box?

    The workshop's answer

The courier needs a full street address and cannot deliver to a PO box. Use another street address or a courier pickup point.

  5. A common question

The courier missed me, or my parcel seems stuck. What should I do?

    The workshop's answer

Contact your local courier office with the tracking number to arrange redelivery or pickup; they often need to speak to the recipient. The workshop contacts them too. Always give a phone number: one parcel went back because the address was incomplete and there was no number.

Questions buyers ask next

How do I keep outdoor cushions from blowing away in Iceland?

Ties at both back corners, a non-slip underside on smooth benches, and a size one person can carry. Lowland winds reach 18 m/s (about 40 mph) on 10 to 20 days a year, so bring deck cushions inside whenever a gale is forecast.

What fabric works for cushions beside a hot tub?

UV-resistant, water-repellent outdoor acrylic or a water-repellent membrane over a thin, fast-draining core, with a zippered cover. Water-repellent sheds splash but isn't waterproof, so unzip and stand the cushion on edge to dry after use.

Do indoor cushions need special care in geothermally heated homes?

Not much. Warm, dry rooms are easy on linen and corduroy. Wash covers at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle without bleach, and let them air dry, which a heated room does quickly.

When should summer house cushions come home for the winter?

When the house closes. Bring them to a heated room in town, or store them clean, fully dry, off the floor and in breathable bags. Water left in foam freezes and thaws in an unheated house and never really dries.
