A letter on outdoor bench cushion fastening, written over three basketweave colors
Saffron, terracotta and deep teal, stacked on a silvered teak bench. Before you choose the color, choose what holds the cushion down.
SaveThe quick answer
An outdoor bench cushion stays put in one of three ways: ties knotted around a slat, a non-slip base panel, or a snug fit with nothing added. Ties suit open, windy benches; a non-slip base keeps a clean look under a porch roof; a snug plain cushion suits sheltered spots. Put the zipper on the back edge, out of sight.

Friend,
A letter about what holds a cushion down
Three cushions sit stacked on a silvered teak bench, and most people ask me which color. I will get to that. First, the question nobody asks.
A cushion on a slatted bench lives in the wind. These are box cushions in a coarse outdoor basketweave, self-piped, all the same depth, resting on weathered teak against cream plaster. Nothing holds them there but gravity, and gravity quits in a squall.
You have three choices. Ties, stitched at the back corners and knotted round a slat. A non-slip base, where the bottom panel is made in grippy fabric instead of the face cloth. Or nothing at all: a snug fit, no extras, which buyers ask for when they want the cleanest line.
On an open bench near the water, I tie. Under a porch roof, a non-slip base is enough. And if the cushion fits the frame end to end, you can skip both. The sliding cushion pattern covers the details.
Zippers go on the back edge. You never see them, and you never sit on the pull. The zipper placement pattern shows the options.
Now the color. Saffron, terracotta and teal all sit easy on silvered teak because none of them fights gray wood. Saffron up top, terracotta bridging, teal as the one cool note. If you have three seats, give each its own. Rain doesn't negotiate, but it doesn't care about color either.
How exposed is your bench? That answers the fastening question before the color question. The outdoor cushions atlas and the outdoor acrylic library will take it from there.
Pinned by Callum: five marks on the stack
Five pins, from the saffron basketweave on top to the silvered teak slats underneath.

- saffron basketweave
Coarse basketweave gives a plain color depth and grip.
- terracotta middle
The warm middle layer bridges the yellow above and the teal below.
- deep teal base
The one cool color stops the stack from feeling too hot.
- self-piped corner
Matching piping keeps each solid clean-edged without adding a line.
- silvered teak slats
Gray weathered teak sits happily under any of these earthy colors.

Ties, grip or nothing: how each one holds
| Fastening | How it works | Best where |
|---|---|---|
| Ties | Fabric ties at the back corners, knotted round a slat or rail | Open benches, windy patios, slatted frames |
| Non-slip base | The bottom panel is made in non-slip fabric instead of the face cloth | Flat seats and covered porches |
| Snug fit, no extras | Cut to the frame with no ties, and no piping if you like | Sheltered spots and clean modern benches |
Mangrove green, no strings attached
One buyer wrote to the workshop for a single outdoor cushion in the mangrove green from the listing photos, about 55 x 23.5 in (140 x 60 cm) and 4 in (10 cm) thick. No piping. No ties. The shop quoted it exactly that way.
Another wanted seven white seat cushions, each 30 x 30 in (76 x 76 cm), for an outdoor set, and got one quote for all seven.
Both said what they wanted up front, and that is the lesson. Piping and ties are options. The time to add them, or drop them, is when you ask for the quote, not after the cushion is sewn.

Buyer questions: fabric brands, pairs and a camper
- A common question
Is your outdoor fabric Sunbrella?
The workshop's answerNo. It is a different outdoor fabric, which the shop rates as higher grade and which costs more, sewn over 32 kg/m³ foam (about 2 lb/ft³). In that case a large concrete-bench order was trimmed to seat cushions only, in black.
- A common question
Can I price an outdoor bench cushion and its back cushion separately, or only as a pair?
The workshop's answerSeparately. In one outdoor fabric, a 32 x 84 in bench cushion 5 in thick (81 x 213 x 13 cm) and an 8 x 84 in back cushion 4 in thick (20 x 213 x 10 cm) were each priced on their own. Select the closest sizes on the listing to see both.
- A common question
Can you make covers for the bench cushions in my small camper trailer?
The workshop's answerYes. Send photos plus a template or drawing with the size of each cushion, six in that case, and the shop reviews the drawing and quotes.
On a slatted outdoor bench, ties knotted round a slat hold a cushion in the wind. Under a porch roof, a non-slip base panel is usually enough.

Questions buyers ask next
Do outdoor cushions on a slatted teak bench need ties?
Not always. Ties help on open, windy benches because they knot around a slat. Under a porch roof a non-slip base often holds well enough, and a cushion cut snug to the frame can go without either.
What changes on a bench cushion when you add the non-slip base option?
Only the bottom panel. Without the option, the cushion is the same fabric all around; with it, the underside is made of non-slip fabric that grips the seat. The top and the side walls stay in the face fabric.
Where should the zipper sit on an outdoor seat cushion?
Along the back edge. There it faces the backrest or the wall, stays out of sight, and you never sit on the pull. The zipper lets the cover come off the foam for cleaning or winter storage.
Which cushion colors suit a weathered gray teak bench?
Earthy solids with some depth. Saffron, terracotta and deep teal all sit well on silvered teak because none of them fights the gray. Mix warm colors with one cool one, and let a coarse weave add texture instead of pattern.
