The fastening question, read from one outdoor cushion corner

No ties in this photo, and that's the point. A close look at one corner shows where every fastening would go, and why you should name them in the order.

The quick answer

An outdoor bench cushion stays put and looks clean when the fastenings are specified up front: name the corners that get ties, choose piping or none, and keep the zipper hidden on the back edge. This woven mustard, plum and sage stripe uses self piping top and bottom, so the edge melts into the pattern.

Swatch strip: six colors off one corner

  • Mustard yellow#D4A437Warms up in hard sun on sandstone.
  • Plum#6E3B5CThe deepest thread; it hides patio dust along the edge.
  • Sage green#9CAF88Cools the mustard so the stripe doesn't run hot.
  • Cream#F1E8D2Ground for the stripe; keeps the pattern open.
  • Branch white#FAFAF5The woven motif that runs straight over the edge.
  • Sandstone#C9A77CThe paving that brings out the warm threads.

What one corner says about fastenings

A corner tells you more about an outdoor bench cushion than a wide shot ever will. This one sits on sandstone in hard sun, and it holds up to the close look.

The color is in the yarn. Mustard, plum and sage stripes are woven on a cream ground, and the white branch motif is woven over them, so the lines stay crisp where the cloth turns down onto the boxing. The stripe carries on down the side, and the cushion looks the same from any angle on the patio.

The piping is cut from the same striped cloth, which makes a fine candy-stripe line round the top instead of a hard band across the pattern. A second welt at the base keeps the box square. Warm stone brings out the mustard and plum; hard sun shows every thread.

Now the fastening question, friend. The corners are where ties go, and you choose which: all four, or just the two on the long edge. Say whether you want piping or none, because both change the build. Keep the zipper hidden on the back edge, so the front shows only welt and pattern. And keep outdoor weaves outdoors; linen and velvet belong inside. Ties and non-slip options and zipper placement cover the details, and the outdoor cushions hub has more sets.

Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything.

Pinned by Callum: one corner, five details

Five pins on a single corner, from the woven branch motif to the bottom welt that keeps the box square.

  1. White branch motif

The white leaf lines are woven in, so they stay crisp over the stripe base.

  2. Piped corner

Self piping cut from the striped cloth gives a fine multicolour line at the edge.

  3. Striped boxing

The pattern carries on down the side, so the cushion looks the same from every angle.

  4. Bottom welt

A second welt at the base keeps the box shape square.

  5. Sandstone

Warm stone brings out the mustard and plum threads.

A real project

Ties on the long edge, and no piping

A buyer in the US wanted a water-resistant set for an outdoor patio couch: a seat cushion 48 x 24 x 5 in (122 x 61 x 13 cm) and a back cushion 48 x 18 x 3 in (122 x 46 x 7.6 cm). No piping. Ties at the two corners of the long edges.

The shop quoted the pair. The buyer went with another vendor in the end. That happens.

What I like is the order note itself. It said where the ties go and whether there's piping, and both change the build. Tie positions decide where the tapes are sewn; piping or none decides how the edge is finished. Put both in your first message and the quote comes back right the first time. Patio furniture replacement cushions lists the rest, and the outdoor fabric family shows the weaves.

Buyer questions: indoor fabric, backrests and a bigger order

  1. A common question

Can I use the linen or velvet cushions outside? I wanted a fun color out there.

    The workshop's answer

No. Those indoor fabrics aren't suited to outdoor use. Outdoor cushions and their backrests should be ordered through the outdoor listing, which has more than 100 color options. The shop canceled and refunded the indoor order so the buyer could reorder correctly.

  2. A common question

Does the listing price include the backrest, and how do I add back cushions?

    The workshop's answer

The size-range price covers the seat cushion only. Order each back cushion as its own item through the same listing, with its own measurements and priced by its size, and write 'backrest' in the note. One seat and two back pillows is three items, made as a matching set.

  3. A common question

Is there a discount for a big set of outdoor cushions?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Bulk orders get an extra discount on top of the store discount: a 13-piece patio set of seats and backs was reduced, and a set of 6 seats and 6 backs came with a 7th back cushion free. Making cushions in pairs doesn't lower the cost, though.

On an outdoor bench cushion, write where the ties go in the order: ties on the two long-edge corners only is a different build from four.

Questions buyers ask next

Which corners of an outdoor bench cushion should get ties?

The ones that meet the frame, and you name them. One buyer asked for ties at the two corners of the long edges only; state yours in the first message so the quote matches the build.

Why pick a woven stripe over a plain fabric for patio cushions?

The color is in the yarn, so stripes stay sharp where the fabric turns down onto the boxing and the white motif runs straight over the edge. A busy weave also hides patio dust.

Where should the zipper sit on an outdoor box cushion?

On the back edge, hidden, facing the wall or the backrest. The front then shows only the piped welts and the pattern, and the cover can still come off.
