Custom cushions for Belgian townhouses, bay windows and gardens

In New Orleans the afternoon light is butter. In Brussels it is pewter, and I love it for what it asks of color: a cushion here has to mean it.

The quick answer

Custom cushions in Belgium should be chosen for soft, gray northern light: warm neutrals or clear mid-tones instead of chilly pale grays, velvet or a linen blend for tall-ceilinged rooms, and water-repellent outdoor fabric on garden benches. Uccle averages about 190 wet days and 1,604 hours of sunshine a year, so garden cushions go under cover or indoors after rain.

Pewter light: 190 wet days and 1,604 hours of sun

The Royal Meteorological Institute's normals for Uccle, 1991 to 2020, give about 33 in (837 mm) of precipitation spread over roughly 190 days, and about 1,604 hours of sunshine a year. June and July bring the most, near 200 hours each. Relative humidity averages 77%, from about 69% in April to 87% in December.

That light is cool and diffuse. It pulls cream toward gray and makes a chilly blue look colder still. The damp matters too: a garden cushion soaked in a shower won't dry on its own, and the EPA's rule of thumb is to dry wet materials within 24 to 48 hours.

So custom cushions in Belgium start with two questions. How will the color read under a gray sky, and where does the cushion go when it rains? Our Pacific Northwest page answers the same questions for another gray-light coast, and Bulgaria shows what happens when the sun finally shows up.

Horta's light, Zurenborg's bays and the brick row

Brussels was one of Europe's great Art Nouveau centers. Victor Horta's Hôtel Tassel, finished in 1893, joined three other Horta townhouses on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2000, and those houses stand on relatively narrow lots in Schaerbeek, Etterbeek, Ixelles and Saint-Gilles. On a narrow lot, every tall window and every bay counts.

In Antwerp, bench cushions for Zurenborg follow the same logic. The district's townhouses, largely built between 1894 and 1906 around Cogels-Osylei, mix Art Nouveau with a handful of revival styles, and their bays are rarely square.

The built-in seats fall into a few families: bay window seats with angled ends, window seats built over a radiator under a tall sash, kitchen benches along a party wall, and a bench at the far end of a deep, narrow garden. For a curved bay, the workshop needs a drawing that marks where each curve starts and ends and how deep it runs; the curved cushion Pattern shows how to take those numbers.

One buyer wrote to the workshop about a window-frame seat of 15.4 x 44.5 in (39 x 113 cm), 1.6 in (4 cm) high. She was told to choose the 15¾ x 47¼ in (40 x 120 cm) option and write her exact size in the order. It came in a soft performance weave with contrasting piping and fit edge to edge.

Choosing color for a gray northern room

Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. In a Belgian salon that matters more than anywhere I know, because the daylight itself runs cool.

Choose warm-leaning neutrals, oatmeal, camel, biscuit, over a pale gray that goes flat by November. Where you want color, pick clear mid-tones with some depth: petrol teal, ochre, cranberry, ink navy. The photograph shows the braver road: a black-ground hibiscus print on a canal-house bay, with brick facades and a gray sky outside. The street stays calm; the seat sings.

Velvet is my favorite answer for tall-ceilinged rooms. Its short pile shows lighter and darker shading from different angles, so side light from a tall window makes it glow. It is indoor-only and not water-resistant, so keep it off cold, wet glass. For linen lovers, the honest detail: the natural linen chart is 50% linen and 50% polyester, and some linen-look codes are 100% polyester. Real linen vs linen-look explains the trade, and the velvet family shows the colors.

Which way do your windows face, my friends: the street or the garden?

A real project

A concrete daybed, measured to the millimeter

A buyer got in touch with drawings of a concrete outdoor daybed about 118 x 99.6 in (300 x 253 cm). They wanted two seat cushions of 58.8 x 99.4 x 5.9 in (149.25 x 252.4 x 15 cm), each cut deliberately about 0.4 in (10 mm) shorter and 0.2 in (5 mm) narrower than the frame, so the pieces would drop in without a fight.

Their list was precise: quick-dry reticulated foam, a mesh base, a concealed zipper, a double welt in the same fabric and two round head cushions. The workshop answered just as precisely: 32-density medium-firm foam, premium outdoor fabric, UV-resistant thread and a mesh drainage bottom, with 10 to 14 days of production. The foam was the difference, and in the end they chose another maker at a lower price.

I tell the story anyway, because the lesson suits garden bench cushions in Belgium perfectly: agree the foam before you compare quotes. Quick-dry foam and standard foam are different cushions, not different prices for the same one.

What it taught
Agree reticulated quick-dry or standard foam up front; it drives both the price and how the cushion behaves in rain.

A Belgian year for cushions

  • April, the least humid month at Uccle: wash covers at 86°F (30°C), inside out, on a gentle cycle, and air dry them.
  • June and July, the sunniest months: draw sheers at midday on south-facing bays so velvet and linen blends fade more slowly.
  • After every shower: stand garden cushions on edge under cover and unzip the covers; soaked standard foam needs 24 to 48 hours to dry.
  • October: bring garden cushions in, washed and dry to the core, and store them off the floor in breathable covers, never sealed plastic.
  • Winter mornings: wipe condensation from the sill and lift window-seat cushions to air them; December humidity averages near 87%.
  • Non-slip bases: wipe them clean; the washer and dryer shrink them.

Gray light doesn't dull a good color. It asks the color to mean it.

Buyer questions: bays, curves and gray-light color

  1. A common question

The fabric looked cream in the listing photo, but the chart makes it look gray, almost blue. Which one is right?

    The workshop's answer

It comes down to light. The listing photos were shot under warm light, which brings out cream and beige, while cool light or daylight makes the same fabric read grayer. The chart tones are closer to the truth, and the workshop sends real photos of your chosen fabrics before production, so you can still switch codes.

  2. A common question

How do I give measurements for a trapezoid window seat cushion in a bay?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop sends a drawing with the sides labeled A, B, C and D, and you write each length on it, for example 43.3, 48, 13.8 and 13.4 in (110, 122, 35 and 34 cm), plus the thickness, such as 3.5 in (9 cm). Trapezoids can also be made in tufted corduroy.

  3. A common question

Can you make cushions with curves from a plan?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, from a drawing that marks the start and end point of each curve along the edge and how deep each curve is. With several cushions, send a separate drawing for each. Very complex curved shapes may be declined if a precise fit can't be guaranteed.

  4. A common question

What are the fabrics made of? Is the linen 100% linen?

    The workshop's answer

The soft performance fabric is a poly-cotton blend: thick, soft, durable and easy to clean. The natural linen chart is 50% linen and 50% polyester, and some linen-look codes are 100% polyester. None of the linens discussed were pure linen, so ask about the exact code.

  5. A common question

Are your outdoor fabrics waterproof, or only water-repellent?

    The workshop's answer

Water-resistant. They handle showers and spills well, but for long off-season stretches the workshop still recommends storing the cushions indoors, as with any outdoor textile.

Belgian cushion questions

Can garden bench cushions stay out through a Belgian winter?

Not with standard foam. Uccle averages about 190 days with precipitation and 77% relative humidity, so a soaked cushion rarely dries outdoors. Store covers washed and foam dry, indoors and off the floor, in breathable covers rather than sealed plastic.

Which cushion colors look best in gray northern light?

Warm-leaning neutrals such as oatmeal and camel, and clear mid-tones such as petrol teal, ochre or cranberry. Cool daylight pulls cream toward gray, so check swatches at your own window, morning and afternoon, before you order.

How thick should a bay window seat cushion be in an old townhouse?

Usually 3 in (7.5 cm) for a neat, low line, or the standard 4 in (10 cm) for everyday sitting. Before you order, check that inward-opening windows, shutters and radiator valves still clear the top of the cushion.

Is velvet a good choice for a tall-ceilinged Brussels salon?

Yes, indoors. Its short pile catches side light from tall windows and shows lighter and darker shading from different angles. It isn't water-resistant, so keep it off cold, wet glass and spot-clean spills quickly; zippered covers wash at 86°F (30°C).
