Custom cushions for Dutch canal houses, houseboats and balconies

An Amsterdam canal-house plot began 18 feet (about 5 m) wide. Everything that goes into the house must fit that width, and that staircase. Cushions too.

The quick answer

Custom cushions in the Netherlands usually go on a canal-house window seat, a houseboat bench or a narrow balcony. Measure in centimeters, keep window seats low at 1.5 to 3 in (4 to 7.5 cm), split long benches into pieces that can climb a steep staircase, and choose zip-off covers that wash at 86°F (30°C), because the air is damp for most of the year.

Watch for

  • Steep, narrow stairs on delivery day
  • Condensation on big, cold windows
  • Damp air on houseboats
  • Southwest wind on open balconies

Plain-language levels from general climate patterns, not measurements. Your own porch, shade and window exposure matter more.

Damp before cold

KNMI, the Dutch meteorological institute, keeps its main station at De Bilt. The 1991–2020 averages are mild. January reaches 43.0°F (6.1°C) by day and 33.6°F (0.9°C) at night. July reaches 73.6°F (23.1°C).

The water is the story. Precipitation falls on about 186 days a year, 33.6 in (855 mm) in all, spread fairly evenly across the months. Relative humidity averages 81 percent and reaches 89 in December. The prevailing wind comes from the southwest.

Daylight runs from barely eight hours in December to nearly seventeen in June.

For a cushion, this means three things. Covers that come off. Foam that dries through. Color judged in gray light.

Five meters wide, and one staircase

A canal house, a grachtenpand, is slim, high and deep. In 17th-century Amsterdam the plots started at 18 feet, with an Amsterdam foot of about 11.1 in (28.13 cm). That is about 16.6 ft (5 m) of frontage. Custom cushions for Amsterdam start with that width.

Look up at the gable. The beam with a hook, the hijsbalk, was built to hoist trade goods into the attic. Dutch sources note that houses with narrow stairs still use one. These days it mostly lifts furniture.

A cushion should not need the beam. Ours travel vacuum-compressed, so a 4 in (10 cm) bench cushion arrives as a flat parcel that goes up any stair. Open it within a few days. Most cushions recover in 24 to 72 hours; the vacuum-packed Pattern has the details.

Long benches are better in pieces. A buyer in the Netherlands with a built-in sofa bench 173 in (440 cm) long and 22.75 in (58 cm) deep asked for two cushions of 86.5 in (220 cm) rather than one. Two pieces turn on a landing. One does not. The long bench Pattern weighs the choice.

Tall windows, deep ledges, a low seat

In a narrow house the light comes in at the ends, front and back. The window is the room's lamp. Under it there is a ledge, a sill or a built-in bench.

Keep the seat low. Height is a feeling. On a deep ledge, 1.5 to 2 in (4 to 5 cm) reads as part of the window. On a bench where someone reads for an hour, 3 in (7.5 cm).

In winter, cold glass meets damp air here. If the glass sweats, wipe the ledge and lift the cushion to breathe. A zip-off cover in linen-look fabric or bouclé washes at 86°F (30°C). Measure with the Pattern on measuring a window seat.

The light is close kin to the Pacific Northwest and to Denmark.

Houseboats: every seat is built in

About 2,400 families live on Amsterdam's inner waters. Around 2010 the country had roughly 12,000 houseboat berths, most of them in the Amsterdam area. Some boats are converted working vessels; others were built as floating houses from the start.

On board, benches taper, curve and meet at odd angles, so houseboat cushions are made to measure: - Draw it. A sketch with every side labeled beats two numbers. The boat cushion Pattern shows how. - Plan for damp. Zip-off covers, and a spare cover to rotate while one dries. - On deck, use water-repellent fabric. Standard foam is not a quick-dry grade, so after rain stand the cushion on edge until it is dry through. - For guests, a doubled floor cushion is a seat by day and a bed at night.

Picked for Netherlands

A real project

A 1.5 in (4 cm) window-frame seat that fit edge to edge

A buyer in the Netherlands had a seat built into a window frame: 15.25 x 44.5 in (39 x 113 cm), with room for a cushion 1.5 in (4 cm) high. Not 2 in. Not a hair over 1.5.

The workshop suggested she choose the 15.75 x 47.25 in (40 x 120 cm) option and write her real size on the order. It was made to her numbers, in color 945 with contrasting 940 piping.

It shipped within two days. She wrote back that it was beautifully made and fit exactly.

Nothing clever happened. She measured the frame, not the old cushion. She gave the height as a limit. The workshop cut to her numbers.

A window seat asks for three measurements. Length. Depth. The most the cushion may rise. What are yours?

Measured

What it taught
Order the next size up and write the exact size; a made-to-measure window cushion should fit edge to edge.

A Dutch year, cushion by cushion

  • Autumn: wash covers at 86°F (30°C), gentle cycle, no bleach. Air-dry. No tumble dryer.
  • Before winter: carry balcony cushions in. Rain falls on about half the days of the year.
  • Winter mornings: if the window sweats, wipe the ledge and lift the cushion once a week to air it.
  • Anything soaked: unzip, stand the foam on edge where air moves, and get it dry within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Houseboat: keep the spare cover on board and swap while the other dries.
  • Spring: air everything on the first dry, bright day.
  • New delivery: unpack within a few days and give the foam up to 72 hours to recover.

Calm rooms: one warm neutral, one bolster

Dutch light is gray for much of the year and comes in sideways through big glass. It cools every color. Beige leans gray. White leans blue.

Choose one warm neutral for the seat: oat, taupe, clay. Let the brick outside be the color. If you want more, add one bolster, not five pillows.

Brick outside. Oat on the ledge. Rain on the glass.

A cushion for a canal house has to fit two things: the window and the staircase. Measure both.

Buyer questions: L-benches, spare covers and a toy chest

  1. A common question

Can the bottom cushion be doubled, so I can sit on it and also lay it flat as a mattress?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. An extra layer can be added, for example to a 55 x 27.5 in (140 x 70 cm) floor cushion. The layers are separate pieces, so you can stack them as a seat or lay them side by side as a bed.

  2. A common question

Can you make an L-shaped bench cushion with matching back cushions?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send the length, depth and thickness of each run with a small sketch or photo. One L-shaped lounge bed, about 173 in (4.39 m) along one wall and 73.25 in (1.86 m) along the other, became one 23.5 x 73.25 in (60 x 186 cm) and two 23.5 x 74.75 in (60 x 190 cm) seat cushions, 3.25 in (8 cm) thick, with four wedge backrests.

  3. A common question

Can I order a spare cover in another color, now or later?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Extra covers, in the same color or a different one, can be ordered with the cushion or later on.

  4. A common question

    Can you make a corduroy cushion for a Småstad toy chest? It measures 20.5 x 35.5 in (52 x 90 cm), and I only see 19.75 x 35.5 in (50 x 90 cm).

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Choose the closest option, 19.75 x 35.5 in (50 x 90 cm), and write the real size, 20.5 x 35.5 in (52 x 90 cm), with your color code in the personalization box. It is made to fit the chest exactly.

  5. A common question

Which fabric would you suggest for a hard-wearing, washable dog cushion with rounded corners?

    The workshop's answer

The pet-friendly chart, which washes at up to 86°F (30°C). For a beige cushion with rust-brown contrast piping, the workshop suggested one code for the body and a darker one for the piping; any combination is possible.

Questions buyers ask next

Will a custom cushion fit up a steep Dutch staircase?

Yes. Cushions travel vacuum-compressed, so they arrive as a compact parcel. Unpack within a few days; most recover in 24 to 72 hours. For long benches, ask for pieces of about 79 to 90.5 in (200 to 230 cm), which are easier to carry and turn later.

How thick should a canal-house window seat cushion be?

Low: 1.5 to 2 in (4 to 5 cm) on a deep ledge, 3 in (7.5 cm) on a built-in bench where people sit to read. Give the most the cushion may rise as a hard limit, and it is cut to that.

Which fabric works on a houseboat?

Indoors, a washable performance or linen-look fabric with zip-off covers, plus a spare cover to rotate. On deck, water-repellent outdoor fabric. Standard foam is not quick-dry, so stand a wet cushion on edge and let it dry through.

Why does a gray cushion look blue in a Dutch room?

Dutch daylight is often gray and cool; De Bilt averages about 1,715 hours of sun a year. Cool light pushes gray toward blue and beige toward gray. Judge swatches at the window in daylight, not on a screen or under a warm lamp.
