Custom cushions for Bulgarian terraces, mountain houses and apartments

Bulgaria gives a cushion four seasons in a year, and sometimes in a week. I take its colors from roses and limewash, and its fabric from the weather it will meet.

The quick answer

Custom cushions in Bulgaria must handle strong summer sun and real winters. Use water-repellent, UV-resistant outdoor fabric on Sofia balconies and Black Sea terraces, and store it indoors before snow; Sofia averages about 30 days of snow cover a year. Indoors, velvet, linen blends or corduroy suit wall benches and Bansko chalet window seats, in rose, clay and warm white.

Sun on the coast, snow in the mountains

Sofia records about 2,261 hours of sunshine a year in the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology's 1991 to 2020 normals, and July afternoons average 82°F (27.8°C). The same city averages 38.4 in (97.5 cm) of snowfall, about 30 days of snow cover and a January mean of 31.1°F (−0.5°C).

On the coast, Burgas logs about 339 hours of sunshine in July alone. High in the Pirin mountains, snow cover lasts nearly eight months. That is a wide brief for one country's custom cushions.

Sun fades color and tires fiber. The World Health Organization notes that UV rises about 10% with every 3,280 ft (1,000 m) of altitude and that fresh snow almost doubles exposure, so a chalet window seat can fade faster in February than a city sofa does in May. Snow is harder on foam: water that gets in freezes, thaws and never quite dries. The Colorado page tells the same story for another high, sunny, snowy place; for choosing color under gray skies instead, see Belgium.

Panel-block balconies, painted salons and pine chalets

Sofia grew outward in concrete tower blocks and prefabricated panel apartment buildings, and in those flats the balcony is the summer living room. The photograph shows that room done well: a wooden balcony bench with a dusty rose and white striped seat, two lift-off back cushions in plain rose, and geraniums on the rail. Keep balcony cushions light enough for one person to carry inside when a storm rolls in; the bench cushion builder helps you size one.

Plovdiv's Old Town keeps the 19th-century houses of the National Revival: symmetrical fronts, upper floors projecting over the street, bay windows and painted facades. Many of their salons had low benches built along the walls, the ancestor of every banquette I love. A wall bench like that wants a firm seat, back cushions and round bolsters, cut to the exact run of the wall.

Bansko sits at 3,035 ft (925 m), with lifts climbing to 8,530 ft (2,600 m), and January nights average 21.7°F (−5.7°C). There the cushion lives indoors: a window seat facing the pines, or a bench beside the stove. Seaside apartments split the difference, with a terrace for summer and a sofa corner for the rest of the year.

Rose, sunflower and limewash

The Rose Valley, between the Balkan Mountains and Sredna Gora, produces close to half of the world's rose oil, and its damask roses are picked from May to June. I would take a palette from there before any trend book: dusty rose, clay pink, the pale sunflower of a painted shutter, the warm white of a limewashed wall.

Let one color speak and the others listen. On a balcony, that means a rose stripe on the seat and plain rose on the backs, as in the photograph, not three pinks competing. In a painted salon, borrow one color from the trim for the piping and keep the body calm. In a chalet, anthracite corduroy with a single rose velvet pillow is warmer than it sounds.

Outdoors, stay in the outdoor range. Indoor velvets and linens fade in strong, prolonged sun, while the outdoor fabrics are woven polyester with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish; the UV rating varies by code, so ask for yours. The rose stripes live in the membrane family. What color is the wall behind your bench, my friends?

A real project

A built-in concrete couch, quoted as one set

One buyer wrote in about a built-in concrete couch, the modern cousin of an old wall bench. The list: three seat cushions of 23.6 x 27.6 x 3.9 in (60 x 70 x 10 cm), one back cushion of 83.1 x 13.8 x 2 in (211 x 35 x 5 cm) and two 23.6 in (60 cm) cylinder armrests.

They wanted light green. The workshop sent photos of mint and of beige, said plainly that colors shift a little in daylight, and added the linen charts so every green could be seen side by side. The whole set was quoted as one package: seats, back and bolsters together.

That is how I would dress any built-in bench, from a salon wall bench to a seaside apartment corner. Measure each run, count every bolster, and choose the color in the light where it will live.

Measured
Three seats 23.6 x 27.6 x 3.9 in (60 x 70 x 10 cm); back 83.1 x 13.8 x 2 in (211 x 35 x 5 cm); two cylinder armrests 23.6 in (60 cm) long
What it taught
Built-in masonry seating needs a full set, seats, back and bolsters, quoted as one package.

The Bulgarian cushion calendar

  • May and June, rose season: wash covers at 86°F (30°C), inside out, on a gentle cycle, and air dry them before terrace season.
  • July and August: on sunny balconies and coast terraces, move cushions into shade or indoors when no one is sitting.
  • After a summer storm: unzip the covers and stand the foam on edge; soaked standard foam needs 24 to 48 hours to dry.
  • Before the first snow: bring balcony and terrace cushions in, clean and dry to the core, and store them off concrete in breathable covers.
  • Mountain winter: draw curtains at midday on window seats that face snow; fresh snow almost doubles UV exposure.
  • All year: wipe non-slip bases clean instead of washing them.

In Bulgaria one cushion can meet salt air in August and snow light in January. Choose its color for the light and its fabric for the weather.

Buyer questions: reds, bolsters and outdoor stripes

  1. A common question

Can you recommend a red that matches the red in my rug?

    The workshop's answer

First the workshop asks whether the cushion is for indoors or outdoors and whether you want a solid or a pattern, so it searches the right fabric family. For an indoor solid it suggested two reds, and recommended cream or beige piping from the same chart so the tones work together.

  2. A common question

Can I use the ticking stripe for garden cushions that stay out all year?

    The workshop's answer

No. The ticking stripe is 100% cotton and isn't made for outdoors. Use the outdoor linen-look fabrics instead: water-repellent, UV-resistant and in natural tones.

  3. A common question

For a bench cushion with a back bolster, what depth and bolster size should I choose?

    The workshop's answer

The standard bolster is 8 in (20 cm) across. For 31.5 in (80 cm) of seating depth, the workshop recommends 39.4 in (100 cm) of total depth to leave room for the bolster. Exact sizes are possible, such as an 8 in (20 cm) thick seat with an 11.8 in (30 cm) bolster, which costs more than the standard 4 in (10 cm) version.

  4. A common question

How tall should the back cushions be on a daybed? Could they be 27.5 in (70 cm)?

    The workshop's answer

The standard back pillow is 15.7 in (40 cm) tall, and 27.6 in (70 cm) is too tall for a backrest. On a 78.7 in (200 cm) daybed, two back pillows of 15.7 x 39.4 in (40 x 100 cm) span the full length, and bolsters with inserts come in the set.

  5. A common question

Will the color look the same in person as on my screen?

    The workshop's answer

There can be small differences in daylight. That's why the workshop sends real-life photos of the fabric on cushions and suggests ordering samples.

Bulgarian cushion questions

Can Sofia balcony cushions stay out through the winter?

No. Sofia averages about 30 days of snow cover and a January mean of 31.1°F (−0.5°C). Water in foam freezes and thaws without drying, so store balcony cushions indoors, clean and fully dry, in breathable covers.

What fabric suits a Bansko chalet window seat?

Indoors, corduroy or velvet: warm to the touch and easy to spot-clean, and neither is for outdoors. Bansko sits at 3,035 ft (925 m) and January nights average 21.7°F (−5.7°C), so keep the cushion off cold, damp glass and air it weekly.

Which rose colors work outdoors on a Bulgarian terrace?

Choose the rose from the outdoor range, which is water-repellent and UV-resistant, and ask for the exact code's UV rating, since it varies by code. Keep rose velvets and linens indoors; they fade in strong, prolonged sun.

Can terrace cushions stay out all summer on the Black Sea coast?

On a covered terrace, outdoor fabric can stay out through the season. It is water-repellent, not waterproof, and standard foam holds rain for a day or two, so carry cushions in before storms and store them indoors from autumn.
