Striped outdoor box cushions that turn a stone wall into a bench

A dry stone wall, three striped cushions, a clear morning. Before: a ledge you perch on. After: a seat you stay on. Here is the thinking in between.

Against rough limestone, thick piped cushions show how a soft stripe can take the edge off a hard garden wall.

The quick answer

An outdoor bench cushion turns a stone wall or bare patio frame into a real seat when it is one box cushion cut to the exact depth of the top, in outdoor fabric with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish. On a sofa frame, divide the length evenly between seats and make each back cushion the frame's back height minus the seat thickness.

Before: cold stone and a short sit

Every stone wall at sitting height is a bench waiting for an outdoor bench cushion. People perch on the cold edge for a minute, then go find a chair.

This photograph is the after. Three ivory box cushions striped in mustard, navy, sage and taupe, stacked on rough limestone under olive trees. The camera sits low and to the side on purpose, so you can judge the boxing, the side band that gives a cushion its depth. That depth is the whole makeover. A thin pad on stone still feels like stone.

The stripes do weather work too. Mustard on the top cushion catches the low sun first. Sage in the middle picks up the olive leaves behind. The piping is cut in the ivory ground, so it marks the corners without adding a sixth color to a fabric that already has five. Against rough rock, a smooth outdoor fabric looks softer than it is.

What sits at knee height in your backyard right now: a wall, a ledge, a bare frame?

  1. Mustard stripe

The mustard stripe on the top cushion catches the low sun first.

  2. Piped top edge

Piping in the ground color defines the top panel without adding another line color.

  3. Navy and sage stripes

The middle cushion bridges the warm top and the neutral bottom.

  4. Deep boxing

This side depth is what turns a hard stone ledge into a seat you can stay on.

  5. Dry stone wall

Rough limestone makes the smooth woven fabric look even softer.

The makeover in four measurements

  1. Length at sitting height

Measure the top end to end, where you will sit. On a frame, divide it evenly between seats.

  2. Depth at both ends

Measure front to back at each end, and write both numbers.

  3. Thickness for a hard base

Deep boxing makes stone sittable. The best seller is 3 in (7.6 cm); the sofa set below used 4 in (10 cm).

  4. Backs from the top of the seat

Back height is the frame's back height minus the seat thickness. See the back cushion sizing guide.

A real project

A bare sofa frame, dressed in six pieces

A buyer in the US had an outdoor sofa frame and nothing to sit on. It measured 67.5 in (171.5 cm) long, 27.5 in (70 cm) deep and 21 in (53 cm) high at the back.

The workshop split the length three ways: three seats at 22.5 x 27.5 x 4 in, filling the frame end to end. Then three backs at 22.5 x 17 x 4 in. The 17 is no accident. The backs sit on the 4 in seats, and 17 plus 4 reaches the 21 in frame.

Before anything was cut, both sides agreed on the words too: length is side to side, width is front to back. Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does a frame.

The lesson: Divide the frame length evenly, and size the back from the frame height minus the seat thickness.

An outdoor sofa frame 21 in high at the back takes 17 in back cushions over 4 in seats: frame height minus seat thickness.

Buyer questions: fabric, pieces and zippers

  1. A common question

Is your outdoor fabric one of the big-name solution-dyed acrylics?

    The workshop's answer

No. The workshop doesn't use a branded acrylic, and its outdoor fabrics aren't solution-dyed acrylic. They're polyester-based with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish, so they shed rain, resist fading and clean easily. UV rating and weight vary by fabric.

  2. A common question

If I order an outdoor bench cushion, do I get the seat and the back together?

    The workshop's answer

No. Each order is for one cushion. For a seat plus a back, order a second cushion, or two separate sizes. The workshop then sends a measurement diagram for you to confirm before production.

  3. A common question

What kind of zipper and stitching goes into an outdoor cover?

    The workshop's answer

Durable hidden zippers, concealed as far as possible for a clean look, and double-stitched seams. Outdoor projects can have a concealed heavy-duty zipper and UV-resistant thread.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a cushion be made to fit the top of a stone or brick wall?

Yes. Measure the top of the wall where you sit, its length and its depth at both ends, and order one long box cushion to that exact depth, with a photo of the wall.

How thick should a cushion be on a hard stone ledge?

Thick enough that you stop feeling the stone. One past outdoor sofa set used 4 in (10 cm) seats; 3 in (7.6 cm) is the best seller, in medium-firm high-resilience foam.

What piping color suits a multi-stripe outdoor fabric?

The ground color is the quiet choice. Here the piping is cut in the ivory ground, marking each corner without adding another line of color to a five-color stripe.
