SaveThe quick answer
Custom cushions in Portugal have to handle two climates: sunny, nearly rainless summers in the Algarve and the hot interior, and wet Atlantic winters in Lisbon and, above all, Porto. Use UV-resistant, water-repellent outdoor fabric on terraces, zip-off covers washed at 86°F (30°C) indoors, and colors taken from azulejo blue, whitewash and ochre.

A blue that was built to help with the heat
Walk any old street in Lisbon or Porto and the walls are glazed. Azulejo, Portugal's painted tin-glazed tile, is ornament, but it also had a job: helping to control the temperature inside a home. Blue-and-white tiles from Delft reached Portugal in the late 17th century, and from around 1840 Portuguese houses took up the fashion, brought from Brazil, of covering whole facades in tile. Since 2013 it has been illegal to demolish a building with a tiled facade.
So the palette is already on the wall, my friends: cobalt and white, whitewash, ochre, a little terracotta. A cushion doesn't need to shout over it. Take one blue from the tile for the piping, the ties or a single pillow, and keep the seat quiet in white, stone or sand. The eye sits down first, and here it sits down on blue.
Two coasts, one sun, and the rain in between
Portugal gets roughly 2,300 to 3,200 hours of sunshine a year, and the Algarve's south coast tops 3,100. The IPMA normals, published through the World Meteorological Organization, show how the country splits.
Faro, on the Algarve coast, averages 83.7°F (28.7°C) on July afternoons and 0.06 in (1.4 mm) of July rain. Inland Beja reaches 91.0°F (32.8°C). Lisbon: 81.3°F (27.4°C) in July and 29.6 in (751 mm) of rain a year, about four fifths of it from October to March. Porto: 49.8 in (1,265 mm) on about 147 days, with more than 5.9 in (150 mm) in each month from November to February.
That is two instructions. In the south and inland, the sun does the damage: UV-resistant outdoor fabric under open sky, and cushions put away when the house is closed. In the north, damp does: zip-off covers, dry foam, winter storage for anything outside. The dry-summer, wet-winter rhythm is close to coastal California's.
Eight terrace cushions in one small box
A buyer in Portugal ordered eight outdoor cushions for a terrace: four at 31.5 x 34 in (80 x 86 cm) and four at 31.5 x 27.5 in (80 x 70 cm), all 4 in (10 cm) thick, in a beige outdoor fabric.
When the courier came, the box looked far too small for eight deep seats, and the parcel was turned away at the door. Everything was inside it. The workshop's cushions travel vacuum-compressed, so eight of them fit a surprisingly neat parcel, and the foam comes back once it is opened.
The lesson is simple: a small box is normal. Open it within a few days, let the foam breathe, and most cushions are back to full size within 24 to 72 hours. The vacuum-packed Pattern has the routine.
The color was a good call, too. A sandy beige outdoor fabric stays calm under hard southern light and lets everything around it carry the color. How many seats does your terrace need?
- Measured
- Four cushions 31.5 x 34 x 4 in (80 x 86 x 10 cm) and four 31.5 x 27.5 x 4 in (80 x 70 x 10 cm)
- What it taught
- Vacuum-packed cushions arrive in small parcels; accept the box and give the foam a few days to recover.
Iron balconies and townhouse windows
Lisbon's Baixa was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 in the Pombaline style: buildings of up to four floors, shops under arcades, and balconies on the first and top floors. In the old cities many balconies are narrow, behind iron railings, with room for a folding chair or a small bench.
A narrow balcony wants a light cushion. Chair pads 2 in (5 cm) thick, tied at the back legs, fold away with the chair. A pale stripe on a small bench keeps the corner from turning heavy. For custom cushions in Lisbon or Porto, bring them in when the wet months start.
Inside, a window seat against cold winter glass wants a zip-off cover that washes at 86°F (30°C), and a cushion lifted to air when the glass sweats. The window seat hub shows the edges.
Algarve terraces and quinta courtyards
An Algarve villa lives outdoors from spring to autumn: a terrace sofa, loungers by the pool, a table under a pergola. Terrace cushions for the Algarve sit in full sun. - Terrace sofas: 4 in (10 cm) seats in UV-resistant, water-repellent outdoor fabric, stripes cut front to back so the modules still line up when you move them. - Loungers: split the cushion where the back hinges so it folds cleanly. The sunbed Pattern gives sizes. - Round rattan sofas: measure the depth of each curve, not only its length (see the buyer questions below).
A quinta is a country estate, with a manor house and often vineyards or olive groves. Its seats are long benches in courtyards and gardens. Cushions there are big and few, so decide early between one long piece and two, and between foam and pillow backrests. The bench cushion builder sketches both.
Terrace, balcony, courtyard: fabric and foam
| Seat | Fabric | Thickness | Piping and fastening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Algarve terrace sofa | Outdoor fabric, UV-resistant and water-repellent | 4 in (10 cm) seats | Navy or self piping; stripes front to back |
| Poolside lounger | Outdoor fabric | 4 in (10 cm), split at the hinge | Ties at the hinge and the head |
| Lisbon or Porto balcony bench | Outdoor fabric | 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) | Ties at the back; indoors for the wet months |
| Balcony folding chairs | Outdoor fabric | 2 in (5 cm) | Ties at the back legs |
| Quinta courtyard bench | Outdoor fabric; cotton stripes stay indoors | 4 in (10 cm) seat and back | Foam or pillow backrest, decided early |
| Townhouse window seat | Linen-look or gingham | 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) | Zip-off cover washed at 86°F (30°C) |
Fabric comes off a roll about 55 in (140 cm) wide, so stripes on long cushions normally run front to back, and a long striped piece may need a seam. Seat foam is 32 kg/m³, about 2.0 lb/ft³, indoors and out.

SaveA Portuguese year for outdoor cushions
- October: Lisbon's wet season begins. Wash outdoor covers at 86°F (30°C), gentle cycle, no bleach, air-dry, and store the cushions dry.
- November to February in Porto: more than 5.9 in (150 mm) of rain a month on average. Outdoor cushions live indoors.
- Townhouse winter: if the window sweats, wipe the sill and lift the seat cushion to air.
- Anything soaked: unzip, stand the foam on edge where air moves, and dry it within 24 to 48 hours.
- May: air everything for a day before the first long lunch outside.
- July and August: swap terrace cushions around. Nearly half the day's UV arrives between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- On the coast: rinse salt from zippers with fresh water now and then.
In Portugal the wall is already painted blue and white. Let the cushion answer it, not argue with it.

Buyer questions: outdoor stripes, curves and matching colors
- A common question
Do you have a striped fabric that works for outdoor cushions?
The workshop's answerThe cotton stripe range is 100% cotton, so it is indoor-only. For a striped look outside, the outdoor charts include striped fabrics that are water-repellent and UV-resistant.
- A common question
Can you make a curved wedge cushion for one segment of a round rattan outdoor sofa?
The workshop's answerYes. Besides the outer arc, 43.5 in (110 cm), the inner arc, 17 in (43 cm), and the two sides, 19.75 in (50 cm) each, the workshop needed the depth of the curve: 11.5 in (29 cm) from the middle of the straight line across the inner edge to the arc, marked on a sketch. The buyer ordered one to test the fit before ordering the rest.
- A common question
What if none of the samples match the cushions I already have?
The workshop's answerThe workshop sent a second round of samples free of charge. One buyer found the first picks too light or a different tone than on screen, then tried warmer browns and olive stripes and found a match.
- A common question
Where can I see the piping colors?
The workshop's answerThere is no separate piping chart: piping can be cut from any fabric in the charts. Olive green velvet piping has gone on a structured corduroy base, for example.
- A common question
Can you make a matching backrest for my bench cushion?
The workshop's answerYes. For a 74 in (1.88 m) bench the workshop made a 23.5 x 74 in (60 x 188 cm) seat and a 15.75 x 74 in (40 x 188 cm) backrest, both 4 in (10 cm) thick, with a contrasting burgundy piping line.

Questions buyers ask next
Which fabric suits a terrace in the Algarve?
UV-resistant, water-repellent outdoor fabric. Faro averages 0.06 in (1.4 mm) of rain in July, so in summer the sun, not rain, does the wear. Swap cushions around now and then, bring them in when you close the house, and keep cotton stripes indoors.
Can cushions stay on a Porto balcony through the winter?
Better not. Porto averages more than 5.9 in (150 mm) of rain in each month from November to February. Store outdoor cushions indoors, dry, and wash the covers at 86°F (30°C) before they go away.
How do I match cushions to azulejo tiles?
Take one color from the tile, usually the blue, and use it for piping, ties or one pillow; keep the seat calm in white, stone or ochre. Order swatches and hold them against the tile outdoors, in daylight.
Do a Lisbon apartment and an Algarve villa need different cushions?
Often, yes. Lisbon gets about 29.6 in (751 mm) of rain a year, mostly from October to March, so washable covers and winter storage matter most. Faro gets about 20.6 in (523 mm) and an almost dry summer, so UV resistance comes first.
