A Reading by CallumOutdoor & Water-Repellent Cushions
Coral and navy pinstripe outdoor bench cushions by the lavender, and how the cloth wears
Callum takes three buyer questions first, then puts a hand on three striped pads stacked on limestone: how outdoor canvas feels, what it sheds, and what it won't.
SaveThe quick answer
A pinstripe outdoor bench cushion in water-repellent outdoor canvas sheds a passing shower but is not waterproof, so it wants shelter in long rain and storage in winter. The cloth feels dry, crisp and firm, and holds a square box edge. For most patios, water-repellent fabric plus winter storage beats paying for sealed, marine-style seams.
Three questions from the patio before we touch the cloth
- A common question
I'm after a creamy gray or stone color for an outdoor cushion. How do I choose it, and where does it go in the order?
The workshop's answerThe workshop sends its outdoor fabric color charts, which are separate from the indoor ones. Pick the code from the chart and write it in your order.
- A common question
Is there a discount on a big set of outdoor cushions?
The workshop's answerYes. Large outdoor sets get an extra discount on top of the store's standing discount, often with shipping folded into the quote. A sixteen-cushion order of 3.5 in (9 cm) pads, a 13-piece patio set of seats and backs, and a sofa set of six seats and six backs were all repriced as a group, one with a seventh back cushion free. Ordering in pairs, though, doesn't lower the cost.
- A common question
Does the outdoor bench cushion listing include both the seat and the back cushion?
The workshop's answerNo. Each purchase is one cushion. For a seat plus a back, order a second cushion, or two separate sizes, and the workshop sends a measurement diagram for you to confirm before production.
Now, the reading
Pinned by Callum
Five pins, from the warm coral at the top of the stack down to the pale limestone.

- Coral pinstripe
Coral and aqua give the top cushion the warmest note in the stack.
- Navy and mustard
The middle cushion mixes a dark and a warm stripe to balance the pile.
- Navy and aqua base
Cool stripes at the bottom finish the warm-to-cool gradient.
- Lavender border
Lavender next to the stack repeats the blue-violet of the lower stripes.
- Limestone paving
Pale stone keeps the white grounds looking clean and fresh.

The hand test: what outdoor canvas tells your palm
Those three questions were all asked by eye: which color, how many, which pieces. Fair enough. Everyone starts there. But outdoor cloth has to be chosen by hand too, friend, because the hand tells you how it will live.
Put a palm on the top pad. Outdoor canvas feels dry and a little firm, closer to a sail than a sofa. It doesn't drape the way indoor linen does, which is why these box edges stand square on the stone instead of slumping. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. This cloth makes the promise. A passing shower beads and runs off. A night of standing rain is another matter.
Now the stack. Three white-ground box cushions: coral and aqua pinstripes on top, navy and mustard in the middle, navy and aqua at the base. Warm to cool, top to bottom, so three separate pads look like one planned set. The piping is in the white ground, so the welt disappears and the stripes do all the talking.
The setting finishes it. Pale limestone keeps the white grounds looking clean. The lavender border repeats the blue-violet in the lowest cushion, and the old dry stone wall gives the fine stripes something heavy to stand against. Early evening, low light, and nothing on these pads but stripe.
If you're dressing several garden seats, pick one stripe family and give each seat its own accent. The cloth is in outdoor acrylic. Read water-repellent vs waterproof before paying for either, and winter storage before the first frost. More sets live in outdoor cushions. Where do your cushions spend the winter?
What not to ask of outdoor canvas
- Leaving the pads out through a night of steady rain.
- Storing them damp over the winter.
- Paying for sealed seams on a set that comes inside every fall.
- Choosing an outdoor color from a phone screen instead of the outdoor color chart.
- Assuming one listing covers both a seat and a back.
Eleven covers, and the seams nobody needed
One buyer wrote in with good foam and tired covers. They wanted eleven replacements for a whole outdoor dining and lounge set: a couch, dining armchairs, stools, button-tufted high backs and slanted footstools. The brief was fully waterproof fabric with sealed seams and mesh vents.
The workshop shared its outdoor neutrals and offered a sample pack whose cost comes off the order. It also told the truth: sealed seams and mesh vents aren't offered.
Then the buyer thought about how the set actually lives. The cushions go into storage every winter. They settled, happily, on the standard water-repellent outdoor canvas in the neutrals: cream, beige, taupe and oatmeal.
That's the whole lesson. Water-repellent fabric plus winter storage beats paying for marine-grade sealing.

Questions buyers ask next
Is water-repellent fabric enough for patio cushions?
For most covered or part-covered patios, yes, as long as the cushions come in during long rain and for the winter. Water-repellent cloth sheds a shower; it does not seal out standing water the way a waterproof fabric with sealed seams would.
How does outdoor canvas feel compared with indoor fabric?
Drier, crisper and firmer. It doesn't drape like linen or velvet, which helps box edges stand square outdoors. For cool evenings, bring out a throw rather than expecting the cushion itself to feel plush.
How do I mix several striped cushions on one terrace?
Choose one stripe family on the same white ground, then give each seat its own accent color. Arrange them in a gradient, warm to cool, so the set looks planned rather than collected over the years.
Why is the piping white on these striped outdoor cushions?
Piping in the ground color disappears into the edge, so the pinstripes carry the whole look. A colored welt would add yet another color to a stack that already holds four.
