Navy and mustard pinstripe outdoor bench cushions on a silvered deck, read in three kinds of light

Callum reads white stripes after the rain, and why the deck, not the screen, is where you choose an outdoor color.

On a silver-gray deck, crisp white pinstripe cushions become the brightest thing in the garden.

The quick answer

Check an outdoor bench cushion's color in daylight on the deck where it will live, not on a screen. Even, overcast light shows tones plainly; low evening sun warms everything, and phone photos often misread navy. On a gray deck, a white-ground pinstripe with one warm accent, such as mustard, stays bright without turning cold.

White is the brightest thing on the deck

The rain had just quit when this was taken. You can tell by the boards.

Silvered timber decking, gone gray with the seasons. A wall of dense ivy behind it. Three white box cushions stacked on the boards, each with narrow pinstripes in navy, slate gray and aqua, and a few mustard lines on the bottom one. In a frame this cool and this low in contrast, the white fabric is the lightest thing in sight. It stands out the way a sail does against a dark shoreline.

The stripes are narrow and evenly spaced. That keeps them tailored rather than beachy; wide stripes shout, pinstripes talk. The corners are piped and slightly rounded, because a sharp white box on gray boards looks clinical. Self piping and a softened corner take the edge off.

The gray stripes match the weathered boards almost exactly, and that match is what makes the stack look settled instead of delivered. The mustard does the rest. Take it out and the palette goes as cold as a February dock. More cloth like this sits in the outdoor acrylic family, and more seats among the outdoor cushions and patio and porch cushions.

Pinned by Callum

Five pins, from the narrow pinstripe to the silvered boards that match its grays.

Pinned: White box cushions with navy, gray and mustard pinstripes stacked on a weathered gray deck against an ivy-covered wall
  1. Narrow pinstripe

Evenly spaced fine stripes give a tailored look rather than a beachy one.

  2. Rounded piped corner

Piped, slightly rounded corners stop the white box shape looking stark.

  3. Mustard accent

A few mustard stripes on the bottom cushion warm up a cool palette.

  4. Ivy wall

Dense ivy gives a dark green backdrop that makes the white fabric pop.

  5. Silvered deck

Weathered gray boards match the gray stripes almost exactly.

Morning, evening and the phone in your hand

Outdoor color is not a fixed thing. It changes with the weather, and the weather doesn't ask your opinion.

Overcast morning. Flat, even light, like this photo. Whites read white, grays read gray, and the stripe spacing shows clearly. Judge a swatch in this light first.

Low evening sun. Warm and golden. It flatters mustard and pushes white toward cream. If you only look at a fabric at sunset, expect a cooler cushion at breakfast.

The screen. Phone cameras and monitors are poor judges of navy and white, and a photo you send can't show a maker the true tone either. The screen versus daylight Pattern covers why.

So here's the drill, friend. Order fabric swatches, lay them on the actual boards, and look at 9 a.m. and again at 7 p.m. What does your deck do to white at sunset?

A real project

No buttons allowed, so the seams did the talking

A buyer wrote in wanting an outdoor floor cushion for a Japanese-style seating area: 32 1/4 x 44 in (82 x 112 cm) in white outdoor fabric, with the zipper on the 44 in side. The workshop agreed, and was straight about one thing. A zippered outdoor version would not be tufted.

The buyer worried it would look plain. White, flat, no buttons. So they sent a photo of a cushion they liked, with French seams and detailed sides, and the workshop confirmed it could copy that exact edge.

White hides nothing about shape. On a plain white cushion the seam is the whole design, the same as the piping on these pinstripes. If tufting is off the table, send a picture of the edge you want. The tufted versus plain Pattern lays out the trade.

The lesson: When tufting isn't possible, send a reference photo of the seam and edge detail so the cushion keeps its character.

Buyer questions: fabric, timing and which way is long

  1. A common question

    Is the outdoor fabric Sunbrella?

    The workshop's answer

No, it isn't the Sunbrella brand. The workshop uses its own outdoor fabric, which it describes as a higher-quality, more costly cloth, and outdoor cushions are made over 32-density foam.

  2. A common question

    How long would bespoke cushions for an outdoor sofa and footstool take, at 33 x 19 3/4 in (84 x 50 cm) and 43 1/4 x 19 3/4 in (110 x 50 cm) in cream?

    The workshop's answer

That pair was quoted as a set from the two sizes, with 7 to 10 days in total from making to delivery.

  3. A common question

For a bench cushion, is length side to side and width front to back?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Think of the sides of a rectangle: length runs left to right as you face the bench, and width, also called depth, runs from back to front.

On a gray deck, a white outdoor cushion needs one warm stripe; without the mustard, the white and navy read cold under an overcast sky.

Questions buyers ask next

Why do outdoor cushions look different in photos?

Screens and phone cameras shift colors, especially navy and white, and the light at the moment of the photo shifts them again. Only a physical swatch seen in daylight, in the spot where the cushion will sit, shows the true tone.

Which stripe width looks tailored outdoors?

Narrow, evenly spaced stripes, like the pinstripes here, read as neat and tailored. Wider stripes lean toward a beach look. On a white ground, one or two warm lines keep the palette from feeling cold.

Can a zippered outdoor floor cushion be tufted?

Not in the zippered outdoor version; the workshop explained it would not be tufted. To keep character without buttons, send a photo of the edge you like, such as French seams or detailed sides, and it can be copied.

What cushion color works on a weathered gray deck?

Weathered boards are cool and low in contrast. A white-ground fabric whose gray stripes match the boards looks settled, and one warm accent such as mustard keeps the whole deck from reading cold.
