  2. Aqua and green

The middle colorway is the coolest, a calm break between two brighter pads.

  3. Green and mustard

Olive and mustard at the base tie the stack to the garden.

  4. Self-piped edge

Ground-colored piping lets the stripes run straight across the seam.

  5. Teak decking

Silver-brown teak is a neutral stage that lets the stripes supply all the color.

Three striped outdoor cushions stacked on teak, and what the inside decides

Callum reads a stack of coral, aqua and green striped box cushions in a whitewashed courtyard and weighs the one choice that sets both comfort and look: tufted or zippered.

The quick answer

An outdoor bench cushion that lives in the weather is best with a zippered, removable cover so the foam can dry after rain, and a zippered outdoor cushion is not tufted. Its character then comes from the edge and the fabric: here one stripe in three colorways, self-piped in the off-white ground, turns mismatched seats into a set.

One stripe, three colorways, one stack

Three cushions, one stripe, three color stories. That's how a patio of odd chairs becomes a set.

The photo stacks them on weathered teak so you can read the palette top to bottom. Coral with cornflower blue on top, a warm-cool pair. Aqua and green in the middle, the coolest of the three and a rest for the eye. Green and mustard at the base, olive tones that tie the stack to the citrus and olive trees behind.

Each is a box cushion on an off-white ground, and the piping is cut in that same ground color. That's the quiet trick. A cord in coral or green would pick one stripe and shout it. Ground-colored piping lets every stripe run over the seam and down the side unbroken.

The courtyard is a neutral stage. Silver-brown teak boards, whitewashed walls, terracotta pots, a clay amphora. Not one prop competes with the fabric, so the fabric supplies all the color.

Now the part the photo can't show. A stacked box cushion shows its edges, and edges tell you what's inside. A crisp, square corner means the foam fills the cover right to the seam. Outside, that foam will get wet. Rain doesn't negotiate. So the question for an outdoor bench cushion is less how soft it is and more whether the cover comes off so the foam can dry. The outdoor cushion atlas and the outdoor acrylic shelf cover the options, and winter storage handles the end of the season. How many different chairs are on your patio right now?

A real project

A white floor cushion that refused to look plain

A buyer wanted an outdoor floor cushion in the Japanese style, in white outdoor acrylic, 32.25 x 44 in (82 x 112 cm), with the zipper on the 44 in side. The workshop agreed, then flagged the catch: a zippered outdoor version wouldn't be tufted.

The buyer worried it would look plain without the tufts. So they sent a photo of a cushion they liked, with French seams and detailed sides. The workshop confirmed it could copy that exact edge.

That's the lesson, friend. When the inside rules out tufting, the edge carries the character. Send a picture of the seam you want, and the tufted versus plain pattern will show you what you're trading.

Outdoor fabric and ordering questions

  1. A common question

Which outdoor fabrics do you offer, and are they waterproof and UV resistant?

    The workshop's answer

There are four outdoor fabric charts. The fabrics are water-resistant and UV- and fade-resistant, meant to stay outside all summer. They are soft woven cloths that feel like real fabric, not vinyl or a plastic finish, and close-up photos are available for any code.

  2. A common question

I need eight cushions in two custom sizes. What's the best way to order them?

    The workshop's answer

Choose the size option the shop names, set the quantity to 8, and type the real sizes in the personalization: in one order, four at about 19 x 22.5 in (48 x 57 cm) and four at about 23.25 x 22.5 in (59 x 57 cm). That came out cheaper than separate listings, and a custom listing is another option.

One stripe design in three colorways turns mismatched outdoor chairs into a set, as long as the piping stays in the ground color so the stripes run over the seam.

Questions buyers ask next

Can an outdoor cushion without tufting still look detailed?

Yes. When tufting is off the table, the edge carries the character: French seams, detailed sides or piping. Send a photo of the edge you like, and the workshop can match that construction on a plain, zippered cushion.

How do I make mismatched patio chairs look like a set?

Use one stripe in several colorways. Each cushion takes its own color pair, but the shared stripe width and ground color tie them together. Keep the setting neutral, like gray teak and white walls, so the fabric supplies the color.

What color piping suits a multicolor outdoor stripe?

The ground color. Here the piping matches the off-white base, so coral, aqua and green stripes flow over the edge without a new line interrupting them. A contrast cord would pick one stripe color and make it louder than the rest.
