One long seat, two upright backs and a print that hides a season of wear. Here is where this porch set earns its money, and where you can hold on to yours.

The quick answer

On an outdoor bench cushion, spend on the parts the weather attacks: outdoor-rated fabric, a full-length box seat and a snug, exact fit. Save where you can reuse what you own, such as sound inserts that only need new covers measured seam to seam, and by ordering every seat, back and bolster together for a bundle discount.

Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. Pinned by Callum: five points from teak leg to door frame

Five pins run from the teak leg on the deck up to the painted door frame, in the order weather and wear reach them.

  1. Full-length seat

A single boxed seat runs the whole bench, so there is no gap in the middle.

  2. Left back cushion

Back cushions stand upright on the seat against the low teak back.

  3. Geometric mosaic print

A busy multicolored print hides wear and brings color to a plain wall.

  4. Teak leg

Warm teak balances the cool teal and gray in the pattern.

  5. Blue-gray door frame

The painted frame picks up the gray-blue in the print.

Deck to door frame: reading the porch bench

Start low, friend. The teak legs stand on open deck boards, and warm teak is the one thing in this picture that isn't cool. It balances the teal and gray in the print before you notice anything else.

The seat is a single box cushion running the full length of the bench. No split, no gap in the middle, nothing for the two back cushions to tip into. They stand upright on that seat against the low teak back, and the bench becomes a compact sofa without anybody buying a sofa.

The piping is self piping, cut from the print itself. A contrast welt would draw a line around every piece; here the mosaic runs on from seat to back, and the box edge keeps the shapes crisp in soft, shaded porch light.

Now the print: teal, coral, gray and white in a busy geometric mosaic. Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither do sneakers, sunscreen and pollen. A pattern like this hides what they leave behind far longer than a plain pale seat would. The blue-gray door frame picks up the gray-blue in the pattern, and the plain white wall lets it be the only art on the porch. No pillows, no rug, no planters. The cushions do all three jobs.

Copy that if your walls are plain: one patterned set in outdoor acrylic can stand in for the pillows, rug and art you were about to buy. The outdoor cushions in the Atlas show the same trick in stripes and solids.

Ten covers, no new foam

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about an outdoor sectional with benches. The inserts were fine; the covers were not. They wanted ten new ones, piped and zippered: seven at 25 x 15.5 x 4.25 in (63.5 x 39 x 11 cm), two large pieces at 76.5 x 30.5 x 5.5 in (194 x 77.5 x 14 cm) with rounded back corners, and one at 47 x 15 x 5.5 in (119 x 38 x 14 cm).

They had measured the boxed side panel seam to seam and wanted the same full, tailored look as the old set. The workshop accepted the 5.5 in panel as given and asked three things before cutting: how far from each corner the curve begins, the bolster sizes, and whether the throw pillows and bolsters needed inserts too.

That is the cheapest good decision on a patio: keep sound inserts and buy new skins. Measure the panel seam to seam and don't pad the number. A full insert should crown the top of the cover; an enlarged panel just goes slack. Our notes on covers for foam you already own walk through it.

How old are the inserts under your covers, and do they still spring back when you press them?

Buyer questions: outdoor cloth, a trailer seat and the bundle question

  1. A common question

Are your fabrics for indoor use only, or can my cushion be made in something that holds up outside?

    The workshop's answer

Most cushions can be made in outdoor-rated, water-resistant fabrics. The full outdoor palettes sit on the outdoor bench cushion listing; order from there, or use the outdoor fabric code on another cushion's listing.

  2. A common question

Can you replace a travel trailer cushion that measures 6 ft by 31 in and at least 3 in thick?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. RV and trailer replacement cushions are made to size, so 72 x 31 in (183 x 79 cm) at 3 in (7.5 cm) or thicker is no problem; the workshop sends a purchase link set to those measurements.

  3. A common question

If I order several cushions at once, is there a discount?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Multi-piece orders get a bundle discount. It has applied to sets of outdoor seats, outdoor sofa cushions, bench sections, and seats with backs for several benches, and the bundle quotes have included shipping.

An outdoor bench cushion earns its money in the fabric and the fit; if the old inserts still spring back, new covers measured seam to seam are the saving.

Questions buyers ask next

Should a long outdoor bench seat be one cushion or two halves?

On a bench like this one, a single full-length box seat. It leaves no gap in the middle, and the back cushions stand on one level surface instead of tipping into a seam. Split it only when the length becomes hard to handle.

Does a busy print make patio cushions last longer?

It doesn't change how the cloth wears, but it hides the wear. Small marks, drips and pollen disappear into a multicolored geometric pattern long before they would on a plain pale seat, so the set looks fresh for longer between washes.

What do I measure to order new covers for old outdoor inserts?

Length, depth and the boxed side panel of the existing cushion, each measured seam to seam. Note any rounded corners and how far from the corner each curve begins. Give the real panel height; a full insert should crown the top, not swim in the cover.
