Plate Curved Candy-Stripe Outdoor Cushion on a Teak Crescent Bench

Cut from a curved template, this candy-striped outdoor cushion follows the teak crescent without bunching at the ends.

A curved striped outdoor bench cushion and the piping cut from its own stripe

A teak crescent under a porch roof, five colors in the stripe, and an edge that breaks into dashes. I read the piping first.

The quick answer

On a striped outdoor bench cushion, piping cut from the same stripe turns the edge into small dashes of every color, which suits a busy pattern. A solid contrast cord draws one hard line, and no piping gives the softest edge. On a curved bench, cut the cushion from a template of the arc, never as a rectangle.

Pinned by Callum: five points along the crescent

Five pins, from the stripes that bend with the arc to the potted palm framing the far end.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Stripe piping makes dashes, not a line

Five colors in one stripe: ivory, aqua, tangerine, sunflower yellow and sage. That is a lot of weather for one outdoor bench cushion, and it works because the edge does not add a sixth.

The piping is cut from the same striped cloth, on the bias. Wrapped round the cord, the stripes break into short dashes of every color, running the whole arc. A solid aqua cord would have drawn a single hard line under all that pattern. No piping would have let the curve go soft. Stripe-cut piping keeps the edge sharp and the palette whole. The piping choices pattern lays out all three.

The stripes run along the length and bend with the crescent. The boxing strip carries them round the front, so the lines never break at a seam. That only happens when the cushion is cut from a template of the real curve; the chord and rise pattern shows how to take one.

Two plain pillows calm it down: an ivory textured one, and a gray herringbone that ties the cushion to the charcoal aluminum frame. Palms in concrete planters frame each end, a gray geometric rug lies underneath, flagstone below that. The porch roof keeps it in even shade, which is kind to all five colors.

How deep is the arc on your bench? Measure it before you fall for a stripe. More seats live in the outdoor cushions atlas and the outdoor acrylic library.

Four ways to finish a striped outdoor edge

The reorder that waited a month

A buyer wrote in for a full outdoor dining set in one piped outdoor fabric: four seat pads of about 26 x 16.5 in (66 x 42 cm) and a bench pad of about 70.5 x 16.5 in (179 x 42 cm), both 2 in (5 cm) thick, plus a 70.5 x 15 in (179 x 38 cm) backrest about 1.5 in (4 cm) thick. The set was discounted as a group.

They loved it and came back for two 19.75 in (50 cm) square cushions and one of 63 x 15.75 in (160 x 40 cm), all about 1.5 in (4 cm) thick. Then the fabric supplier delayed that cloth by 3 weeks. The buyer chose to wait about a month rather than switch fabric.

That is a piping lesson as well. When the edge is cut from the same cloth, a matching reorder has to be the same cloth, so ask about stock before you plan a second round. The patio set refresh sketches show how others phase it.

Buyer questions: sets, backrests and a round seat

  1. A common question

Can you make water- and stain-resistant cushions for a whole outdoor sofa set, and quote it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. For two seats of 37 x 22 in (94 x 56 cm), one of about 43 x 22 in (110 x 56 cm) and a 31.5 x 15.75 in (80 x 40 cm) bench, the shop quoted the seat cushions as one discounted set, then a second discounted figure with backrests for all four.

  2. A common question

How do I add matching back cushions to the outdoor bench cushion I already bought?

    The workshop's answer

Order from the same listing. Add each backrest at its size, for example two at about 15.75 x 19.75 in (40 x 50 cm) in the same fabric code, and note in the personalization box that they are backrests.

  3. A common question

Can a small round outdoor chair cushion and a bench cushion go in the same order?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, friend. Add both sizes to the cart and write the dimensions in the personalization box, for example a round seat about 11.5 in (29 cm) across and a bench of 33 x 13 in (84 x 33 cm).

Piping cut from a striped outdoor fabric turns the edge into dashes of every color. A solid cord draws one hard line; no piping lets a curved edge go soft.

Questions buyers ask next

Should piping match or contrast on a multicolor striped outdoor cushion?

Piping cut from the same stripe keeps every color in the edge and reads as a deliberate detail. A solid contrast cord works when one color should lead. On a busy stripe, a single hard line often fights the pattern.

What measurements does a crescent-shaped teak bench cushion need?

The straight side lengths, the height of the arc at its center and the depth of the seat. If the shape is irregular, trace it on paper and send the template. A rectangle cut to the longest length will bunch at the ends.

Can I reorder outdoor cushions to match a set bought a year ago?

Yes, if the same fabric is still available. Matching depends on the same fabric code; when a supplier delays it, you can wait or switch. One buyer waited about a month through a 3-week fabric delay rather than change.

Why run the stripes lengthwise on a curved bench cushion?

Running the stripe along the length lets it bend with the arc and wrap round the front boxing without a break. Stripes running front to back would fan out across the curve and meet the seams at odd angles.
