Gray and navy striped outdoor cushions on a teak corner sofa: what to pay for

Sea air, stone, a teak frame and a stripe that has to line up on every module. Callum takes the corner sofa apart and weighs the decisions, not the fabric.

The quick answer

On striped outdoor cushions for a modular corner sofa, spend on three things: a dedicated corner back cushion, stripes centered and cut front to back on every module, and a true outdoor fabric. Save by ordering covers only when the old inserts still hold their shape, splitting very long runs into sections, and sending a photo so seats and backs are never mixed up.

The cushion, cut open

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 4 in (10 cm) on 17¾ in, to proportion.1. Cover fabric: A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.; 2. Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Cover fabric3Fiber wrap2Piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core2.0 lb HR foam4 in10 cm17¾ in deep · 45 cm

Taking the corner sofa apart

Clear morning, wind off the water, bougainvillea going like a flag. Good day to take a sofa apart.

Bottom to top. A slim teak base frame. On it, box seat cushions in a dove-gray, navy and cream stripe with navy piping. Behind them, back cushions. In the corner, one piece that does the hardest job on the terrace: its own back cushion, so the stripes run true on both arms of the L.

Every seat is cut with the stripe running front to back and centered on the cushion. That costs a little more fabric and a little more care at the cutting table. It buys something worth more: the modules can be swapped, flipped or rearranged after a winter in the shed, and the pattern still lines up. A stripe cut off-center on a modular set looks wrong forever. The Pattern on stripe direction has the diagrams.

The colors are a longevity choice too. On outdoor acrylic, gray, navy and cream stay cool-looking under a strong sun and forgive salt haze. A thin rose thread in the stripe picks up the magenta flowers, so the set looks planned without asking the cushions to carry a bright color that shows fading first.

The terracotta pots of olive and lavender at each end cost nothing in cushion money and stop the pale wall from feeling empty. Styling is the cheapest part of an outdoor room. Spend there freely.

Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything. That is still the single biggest thing you can do for the life of any outdoor cushions, friend, whatever you paid for them.

Five pins run the L from the corner back cushion to a striped seat, the teak base, the bougainvillea and the lavender pots.

The photo that saved a back cushion

A buyer wrote in with photos of a tired patio set. Could the cushions be replaced?

Easy, the workshop said. Length, width, thickness and the quantity are all we need. The buyer ordered two sizes on the listing.

Before cutting, someone looked at the photo again and asked a question: was one of those two sizes meant to be a back pillow? It was. The smaller size became a soft, pillow-like back cushion, and the larger a classic firm foam seat.

Without that photo, two firm seats would have gone out. The buyer said the photo prevented a mix-up, because ordering online is tricky. Cheapest insurance there is. Send the picture. The Pattern on patio furniture replacement cushions lists the rest of what to send.

Buyer questions: long bolsters, IKEA covers, and what the price includes

  1. A common question

Can you make very long outdoor bench cushions and bolsters in one piece?

    The workshop's answer

Very long pieces can go past the maximum single-piece length; pieces of roughly 75 to 142 in (1.9 to 3.6 m) were flagged. A 142 in (360 cm) bolster was made as two 71 in (180 cm) pieces, and you choose where the joins fall. Drain cutouts are made from your drawing, and the bolsters were 8 in (20 cm) across.

  2. A common question

Could you make replacement covers for IKEA DUVHOLMEN outdoor lounge cushions?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes, covers only, to fit the original inserts, for example 48 7/8 x 24 3/8 x 4 3/4 in (124 x 62 x 12 cm) seats and 24 3/8 x 17 3/8 x 5 1/2 in (62 x 44 x 14 cm) backs. The closest green-and-white stripe was N20. A solid piping in exactly the stripe's dark green would be hard to match, so piping cut from the same striped fabric was suggested.

  3. A common question

Does the listing price include a backrest? How do I add back cushions?

    The workshop's answer

The size-range price covers the seat cushion only. Order each back cushion as its own item through the same listing, with its own measurements, and write 'backrest' in the note; it is priced by its size the same way. One seat plus two back pillows is three items, made as a matching set.

On a modular corner sofa, cut every stripe front to back and centered, so the cushions can be rearranged and the pattern still lines up.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a corner back cushion worth it on an outdoor L-shaped sofa?

Yes. Without one, two runs of back cushions meet at a gap, and a stripe cannot line up across it. A dedicated corner back closes the gap and gives the corner seat real support, and the corner is often the seat people want most.

Why should stripes be centered on modular outdoor cushions?

So the pieces can move. When each module has its stripe centered and running the same way, any seat can go in any position and the pattern still aligns. An off-center stripe only looks right in one spot.

When do covers only make sense for outdoor cushions?

When the existing inserts still hold their height and spring back after you sit. Measure the insert itself, not the old cover. If the foam has flattened or crumbles at the edges, new inserts are the better use of money.
