Sand outdoor bench cushions on a covered lanai: a letter about ties, zippers and a base that breathes

A gray wicker corner sofa, sand cushions, a fig tree and a ceiling fan turning slow. Callum writes about the small finishing details that decide whether an outdoor set survives the damp.

The quick answer

Outdoor bench cushions on a covered lanai still need full outdoor finishing, even under a roof. Ask for zipped covers you can take off, a breathable base so the foam dries after a damp night, and corner backs set tight so no hole opens behind the corner seat. In windy coastal spots, add long ties and consider a thicker, heavier cushion.

Friend,

A letter from the lanai

You sent a picture of a covered lanai, so here is my reading of it. A gray resin-wicker corner sofa. Sand-colored box cushions with self piping. A jute rug, a ceiling fan, a white column, palms past the railing. A humid morning, shaded and still.

A roof keeps the rain off. It does not keep the damp off. Salt air and humidity get under any roof, and a cushion that never quite dries is where mildew starts. That is why the color is a solid mid-tone sand. It hides mildew spotting and salt haze far better than white would.

Look at the corner. The seat runs are long pieces, so no seam lands where two people sit. The corner back cushions meet tight, so no hole opens behind the corner seat. Nobody notices a good corner. Everybody notices a bad one.

The styling is sparse on purpose. One fiddle-leaf fig fills the height the low sofa leaves empty. A few books rest on the flat wicker arm, which is wide enough to serve as a side table. The straw-toned jute repeats the sand at floor level. The outdoor cushions carry the room, cut in a solid outdoor acrylic.

What I would add is the part you can't see from here: zipped covers, and a breathable base so the foam can dry after a damp night. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. On a porch you want both the fabric and the construction working for you; there are more porch and patio cushions built that way. How many damp nights does your porch see in a summer?

Pinned by Callum: fig, books, rug and a tight corner

Five pins across the lanai, from the long sand seat run to the corner backs, the books on the arm and the jute underfoot.

  1. Sand seat cushion

Long seat runs avoid a gap right where two people sit.

  2. Corner back cushions

Corner backs meet tightly, so there is no hole behind the corner seat.

  3. Books on the arm

A flat wicker arm is wide enough to double as a side table.

  4. Fiddle-leaf fig tree

A tall plant fills the height the low sofa leaves empty.

  5. Straw-toned jute rug

The rug's straw tone repeats the sand cushions at floor level.

Ten feet of bench and a wind that lifts cushions

A buyer wrote to the workshop about two benches at a beach property. Each cushion was 118 x 15.75 in (300 x 40 cm), first quoted at the standard 4 in (10 cm) thickness.

They asked for two changes. First, 6 in (15 cm) of thickness instead of 4. Second, four long ties per cushion, because the wind off the water could lift a cushion clean off the bench. The workshop confirmed ties on the sides and offered to re-quote for the thicker foam.

That buyer knew the coast. In a windy spot a thicker, heavier cushion stays down better, and long ties finish the job. Where the ties go matters as much as how many; the tie placement pattern shows the options.

Four outdoor cushion details to ask for on a lanai

  1. Zipped covers

Covers that come off let you wash the fabric and dry the foam separately. Say which side the zipper should sit on so it faces the back of the seat.

  2. A breathable base

A base that lets air through lets the foam dry after a damp night instead of holding water against the frame. The glossary calls one version a mesh bottom.

  3. Tight corner backs

Set the corner back cushions so they meet without a hole, and tell the workshop if you measured wall to wall or cushion by cushion.

  4. Ties for wind

On open or coastal porches, ask for long ties on the sides and consider 6 in (15 cm) of thickness so the cushion has the weight to stay put. Dry-fast foam is worth asking about too.

Buyer questions: stone colors, a van bed and an avocado camper

  1. A common question

I want a creamy gray or stone color for an outdoor cushion. How do I choose it?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop sends its separate outdoor fabric color charts. Pick the code you like and write it in your order.

  2. A common question

My van bench pulls out into a bed. Will two cushions side by side feel odd to sleep on?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop said splitting the base into two cushions over the storage compartments won't look or feel strange, so it comes down to preference. It can make 14 x 70 in and 24 x 70 in (36 x 178 and 61 x 178 cm) pieces for a slide-out bed.

  3. A common question

Which color is closest to avocado green for vintage camper cushions, with harvest gold piping?

    The workshop's answer

The closest to avocado is 123, an olive green velvet. For harvest gold piping, 920 is the more mustard shade and 921 the more yellow; 919 is the orange. The workshop sends swatch photos side by side and a picture of a finished cushion in the piping color.

A roof keeps rain off a lanai cushion but not the damp; zipped covers and a breathable base let the foam dry out after a humid night.

Questions buyers ask next

Is sand a better cushion color than white for a humid covered lanai?

Usually. A solid mid-tone sand hides the light mildew spotting and salt haze that humid coastal air leaves behind, where white shows every mark. Sand also echoes jute rugs and pale tile floors.

What goes wrong with cushions on a lanai that never gets rained on?

Damp. Humidity and salt air reach under any roof, and foam that stays moist overnight is where mildew starts. Outdoor fabric, a breathable base and removable zipped covers let the whole cushion dry out.

How should back cushions meet in the corner of a wicker sectional?

Tight, with no hole behind the corner seat. Long seat runs keep seams away from where people sit, and the back cushions are sized so one meets the other squarely in the corner.

How thick should a beach bench cushion be when the wind picks up?

Thicker than standard helps. One buyer moved from 4 in (10 cm) to 6 in (15 cm) for 118 in (300 cm) beach benches and added four long ties per cushion so gusts could not lift them.
