Morning air here arrives already wet, and by noon the light is bright enough to bleach a careless color. These are my notes for dressing galleries, courtyards and hot back bedrooms from Acadiana to Mobile, so the cushions breathe, dry and keep their color.

The quick answer
For New Orleans porch cushions and gallery swings, choose outdoor-rated, water-repellent fabric with zippered covers, and keep velvet and chenille indoors. On daybeds people sleep on, a smooth, breathable weave stays cool. Standard seats are 4 in (10 cm) thick. The foam is not quick-dry, so keep cushions under the roof, dry anything soaked within 24 to 48 hours, and bring them in before storms.

Ninety percent at dawn: Gulf air and Southern light
A cushion on a Louisiana gallery is never truly dry unless someone makes it so. New Orleans mornings average about 87% relative humidity, July mornings about 90%, and Baton Rouge and Lake Charles sit higher still.
The rain comes in armfuls: about 63 in (160 cm) a year in New Orleans, roughly a third of it June through August, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. The sun works through all of it; the July noon UV Index averages about 10.3, very high on the EPA scale.
So every seat has two jobs: breathe and dry, and hold its color against the glare. The EPA advice I repeat most is to keep indoor humidity below 60% and dry anything soaked within 24 to 48 hours. Humidity lives indoors too, so a window seat behind tall shutters breathes the same air as the gallery.
Shotguns, Creole cottages and double galleries
The shotgun house is the city's most common type: one story, one room wide, raised on brick piers, with a door at each end. Creole cottages sit close to the sidewalk under steep roofs. In the Garden District, double-gallery houses stack a porch on a porch, and in the French Quarter the courtyard is the real living room. Raised Acadian cottages carry the same deep porches across the bayou country.
Galleries hold swings and rockers, so begin with porch swing cushions and the wider range of patio and porch cushions. Courtyards want benches, tall windows want window seats, and hot back bedrooms want daybed cushions that turn into a guest bed.
Which of these seats does your household reach for first on a hot evening?
What to cut for the gallery, the parlor and the guest bed
One rule sorts this whole table: where rain can reach, outdoor fabric; where it cannot, you may choose for color and hand.
Bright Southern light flattens a timid color. Indoors, in parlors with tall windows and dark floors, I reach for saturated tones: ink navy, bottle green, burnt orange, a mustard with some depth. In the hero photograph, a black cushion with mustard and taupe leaves holds its own against a white bench and a glaring sash window.
Outside, go lighter: sand, stone, oatmeal, soft stripes. The outdoor fabrics are UV- and fade-resistant, while indoor fabrics have limited UV resistance and can fade in strong, prolonged sun.
Greens are the hardest to judge on a screen; the olive velvet reads yellow-lime under white light and calm under warm light. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. Order swatches, up to 5 codes at a time, and hold them to your walls at noon and at dusk. Try a palette in the pillow cover studio, and find the deepest colors in velvet.
A real project
A yellow daybed for guests on sticky summer nights
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a guest daybed. Guests would sleep on it through hot summers, and she wanted nothing scratchy and nothing plush. A fair brief for anywhere on the Gulf.
The workshop matched her yellow to the Soft Fabric in color 920: smooth, breathable, with self-colored piping so the edge stays quiet. The cushion was cut at 23 5/8 x 79.5 in (60 x 202 cm) and moved up the queue for a July deadline.
Then the courier left the parcel in an unsecured lobby, and it vanished. The workshop opened a carrier claim and made the cushion again. Two lessons, my friends: choose a smooth weave for any surface people sleep on, and give the courier secure delivery instructions.

A Gulf Coast year for your cushions
Spring: unzip and wash the covers, then let them dry completely before they go back on the foam.
June 1: hurricane season opens. Check that one person can carry each cushion through the door, and bring them in whenever a storm is forecast.
Summer: after a soaking rain, stand cushions on edge under the roof and get them dry within 24 to 48 hours.
All year indoors: keep humidity below 60% so daybeds and window seats never feel damp.
Storage: never damp and never sealed in plastic; dry, breathable and off the floor.
November 30: the season closes. Check seams, zippers and the shaded corners of the gallery for mildew.
A soaked cushion on a humid Gulf porch will not dry overnight. Get it under cover and dry within 24 to 48 hours, before mildew settles in.
Which fabric should I pick for a daybed guests will sleep on in a hot summer? Nothing scratchy, nothing plush.
The workshop's answer
The workshop suggested its Soft Fabric: smooth and breathable, so it doesn't feel scratchy or hot. For a 24 x 79 in (61 x 201 cm) daybed cushion, the piping can match the base or contrast with it.
A common question
It's very humid where I live. Can a chenille cushion go outside, or will it mold?
The workshop's answer
Chenille isn't recommended for permanent outdoor use, especially in high humidity. Choose one of the outdoor-performance fabrics instead; they resist moisture, mildew and mold far better.
A common question
The cushion will sit in a sunny window. Will the color fade?
The workshop's answer
The workshop told this buyer its fabric holds up in sunlight and cleans easily with gentle hand cleaning. If the window takes hard sun for hours a day, ask about the outdoor range, which is rated UV- and fade-resistant.
A common question
We have a baby and dogs. Should the slipcover for our store-bought daybed be 100% linen?
The workshop's answer
The workshop sent the linen chart but recommended velvet: its tight weave resists claws and it washes at 86°F (30°C). It also warned that a new cover over the original soft filling stays slouchy. The foam decides the final look.

Questions buyers ask next
Can velvet cushions go on a New Orleans gallery?
Only where the gallery is fully roofed and rain and direct sun never reach the seat. Velvet, linen and chenille are indoor fabrics with limited UV resistance, so where rain can blow in, use outdoor-rated fabric and keep the velvet in the parlor.
How do I keep mildew off cushions in a Louisiana house?
Keep indoor humidity below 60%, as the EPA advises, and dry anything wet within 24 to 48 hours. Choose zippered covers you can wash and dry fully, and never store cushions damp.
How thick should a gallery swing or shuttered window seat cushion be?
The standard is 4 in (10 cm) for seats, swings and outdoor cushions. For a neater window seat, 3 in (7.5 cm) works well, and where a sill or an air-conditioning unit limits height, 2 in (5 cm) keeps the profile low.
Which colors suit a sunny Deep South gallery?
The outdoor fabrics are UV- and fade-resistant, so outside the choice is about heat and mood: sand, stone and soft stripes feel cooler in summer sun. Save ink navy and deep green velvet for the rooms indoors.
