Custom cushions for Louisiana beyond New Orleans: Acadiana, Baton Rouge and camps

Drive west out of the city and the light goes soft and pearly, the color of the inside of an oyster shell. Custom cushions for Louisiana's galleries and camps have to answer to that light, and to air that is almost never dry.

The quick answer

Custom cushions for Louisiana galleries, porches and fishing camps should be made in water-repellent, UV-resistant outdoor fabric with zip-off covers that wash at 86°F (30°C). Baton Rouge mornings average 89% humidity and Lake Charles 90%, so dry soaked cushions within 24 to 48 hours and bring them in before storms. Keep velvet and the most saturated colors for rooms indoors.

Ninety days above ninety, and a morning that never dries

Baton Rouge outdoor cushions face about 90 days a year at 90°F (32°C) or above, more than New Orleans' 77. The city's mornings average 89% humidity, Lake Charles 90%, and each collects roughly 60 to 62 in (152 to 157 cm) of rain a year. Louisiana took 49 hurricane strikes between 1851 and 2004; the season runs June 1 to November 30.

The light is its own weather. New Orleans, the nearest station with the figure, gets only 58% of its possible sunshine, yet its July noon UV Index averages about 10.3, very high on the EPA scale. Hazy does not mean gentle.

So custom cushions in Louisiana must dry, and must hold their color. For shotguns and courtyards, read our New Orleans and Deep South reading. This page travels west, north and out onto the water.

Saturated inside, sun-safe outside

In pearly Gulf light a timid pastel goes chalky. Mid-tones hold their own outside: oyster, driftwood, Spanish-moss gray, a faded paprika stripe. On an open gallery I keep to the outdoor fabrics, woven polyester with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish, close to 200 colors from one mill at one quality.

Behind the shutters I want saturation: bayou green, ink navy, aubergine, an olive gold with depth. Velvet holds those colors beautifully but has limited UV resistance. The eye sits down first, my friends, so let the darkest room carry the deepest color.

One honest warning: indoor and outdoor charts are different families. A buyer who wanted a mustard-gold outdoor daybed like a velvet in a photo was steered to the closest outdoor code. Order swatches, up to five codes at a time, and judge them at noon and at dusk; screen color vs daylight explains why.

A real project

Mattress covers in outdoor cloth, for a house that is never quite dry

A buyer in the US ordered a small stack of swatches, which reached her within days, then asked which fabrics could dress two daybed mattresses. Every fabric family would work, the workshop said, with one note: velvet is for indoor use only.

She chose outdoor fabric in two quiet colors for both mattress covers and their bolster pairs, piped in a soft indoor weave, then added bench cushions: three at 3 in (7.5 cm) and three at 4 in (10 cm).

That is my answer for Louisiana camp cushions. Outdoor cloth works perfectly well indoors wherever spills, wet swimsuits or damp air are daily visitors.

What it taught
Outdoor-grade fabric works indoors too, wherever spills or damp are likely.

In pearly Gulf light, choose outdoor colors one step deeper than you think, and save the saturated velvets for the rooms behind the shutters.

Buyer questions: galleries, camps and color

  1. A common question

Can I have white linen with black piping on my outdoor cushions?

    The workshop's answer

Not in genuine linen, which isn't suitable outdoors. Indoors, white linen with black piping comes straight from the linen chart; for the gallery, the outdoor charts allow any color and piping combination.

  2. A common question

Can I use regular cushions on a covered porch?

    The workshop's answer

Under a closed roof the regular fabrics are fine. For open-air use the cushions are made in outdoor fabric, and any piece can be: seat, backrest or bolsters, screened porches included.

  3. A common question

Which white outdoor fabrics can be cleaned with bleach for stubborn stains?

    The workshop's answer

All the white and off-white outdoor fabrics can be cleaned, and the workshop names a short list of white codes as ideal for bleach cleaning. Ask for those codes before you order if you expect to bleach.

  4. A common question

Are the covers removable, and how should I wash them?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cover has a zipper and comes off completely. Wash at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle with mild detergent and no bleach, and air dry instead of tumble drying.

  5. A common question

Do you have a weather-ready fabric for an outdoor daybed, and does it cost more?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, at a small surcharge. A 52 x 28 x 4 in (132 x 71 x 10 cm) daybed set with a seat, two backrests and two armrests was quoted in both fabrics, the outdoor version slightly higher.

Louisiana cushion questions

Do Louisiana porch cushions need a hurricane-season plan?

Yes. The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30, and Louisiana recorded 49 hurricane strikes between 1851 and 2004. Ready.gov advises bringing outdoor furniture in, so size cushions that one person can carry through the door.

Can fishing camp cushions stay out between visits?

Only under the roof and only dry. Standard foam takes 24 to 48 hours to dry after a soaking and is not quick-dry, so stand wet cushions on edge, and carry them inside the camp before you lock up.

What fabric suits a swing on an Acadian gallery?

Outdoor fabric: woven polyester with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish. A gallery roof keeps most rain off, but wind-driven rain and humidity near 90% at dawn still reach the seat. Indoor fabrics suit only a fully enclosed, dry porch.

Which colors hold up on a sunny Louisiana porch?

Mid-tones and outdoor-rated fabrics. The July noon UV Index averages about 10.3 in New Orleans, very high on the EPA scale. Outdoor fabric is UV-resistant; indoor fabrics have limited UV resistance and can fade in strong, prolonged sun.
