Outdoor cushions for Oklahoma porches, patios and storm season
April is Oklahoma's windiest month, and in April 2022 the statewide average wind hit 12.2 mph, the highest the Mesonet had ever recorded. On a patio like that, a cushion needs ties before it needs anything else.

SaveThe quick answer
Outdoor cushions in Oklahoma need water-repellent, UV-resistant outdoor fabric in mid-tones that forgive red dirt, ties on every piece the wind can lift, and a carry-in plan for storm season, when three of every four tornadoes arrive between April and June. Skip tufting outdoors, and bring cushions in before severe weather, since the foam is not quick-dry.
Wind in April, hail in May, heat by July
April is Oklahoma's windiest month by climate, and April 2022 set the Mesonet record with a statewide average of 12.2 mph (19.6 km/h), the highest since its records began in 1994. Spring is storm season too. Since 1950 the state has averaged 53 tornadoes a year, three-fourths of them in April, May and June, and May alone averages 20.
Hail rides along with them. In May 2025, Oklahoma's National Weather Service offices logged at least 228 reports of severe hail, 79 of them golf-ball size or larger. May is also the wettest month, with normals of 5.73 in (14.6 cm) in Tulsa and 5.31 in (13.5 cm) in Oklahoma City.
Then comes the heat. Tulsa averages 74 days a year at 90°F (32°C) or more and Oklahoma City 72, and western Oklahoma sees 30 to 40 days at 100°F (38°C) or above. Oklahoma City gets 66% of its possible sunshine.
Add it up and you get wind that lifts cushions, storms that soak them and sun that fades them. The answers are ties, a dry place to carry them, and colors that age gracefully.
Patios, porch swings and 1,300 miles of lake shore
Oklahoma shares a census division with Texas, where 77% of new homes started in 2025 came with a patio and only 3% of 2024's had a deck. So here we say patio, usually a covered one off the back of a ranch house, with the grill on one side and the table where Sunday dinner ends up. Patio cushions in Oklahoma earn their keep out there, from the first warm Saturday in March to the last football night in fall. The Texas guide next door tells the same story with a bigger accent.
Tulsa built itself on the oil boom of the 1920s and 1930s, and it shows: Art Deco landmarks downtown, oil-baron houses in Maple Ridge, Craftsman homes around Owen Park. Custom cushions in Tulsa may mean fitting a 1920s porch, not a new one. Out in the country, the farmhouse porch swing is still the best seat on the place. Size porch swing cushions in Oklahoma from inside the arms with the porch swing sizes pattern, and put the ties where the tie placement guide says.
Summer goes to the lake. Grand Lake o' the Cherokees has about 46,500 surface acres and 1,300 miles (2,090 km) of shoreline, which is a lot of docks and screened porches waiting on outdoor cushions. Where does your family actually sit on a Saturday night?
Fabric, foam and fastening for Oklahoma seats
Outdoor fabric here is a woven polyester with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish, and it feels like cloth, not vinyl. The standard 32 kg/m³ foam (about 2.0 lb/ft³) is not quick-dry and has no mesh bottom, so every plan ends with a dry place indoors.
| Seat | Fabric | Build | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Covered patio sofa or sectional | Outdoor fabric in a mid-tone | Box seats, double-piped backs, non-slip base | Structure holds the backs; the roof takes the rain |
| Open patio dining bench | Outdoor fabric | 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm), ties at the corners | Wind gets under a thin pad first |
| Porch swing | Outdoor fabric | 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) seat, back as its own piece, ties at the back corners | A swing that moves shouldn't move its cushion |
| Fire-pit bench | Outdoor fabric | Plain box cushion, never tufted | Tufting lets water in, even in outdoor fabric |
| Grand Lake dock or deck bench | Outdoor fabric | Ties; long runs split into pieces one person can carry | Lake wind and pop-up storms |
| Back-door bench where the dogs come in | Outdoor fabric or a pet-friendly weave | Zippered cover, non-slip base | Red dirt and paws wipe off; covers wash at 86°F (30°C) |
The green stripe that beat the party
A buyer in the US started small: one cushion for an oval wicker loveseat on a covered patio, rounded corners and all. Then came a chair cushion. Then the whole outdoor couch.
By the time the order was final it was a full outdoor room in a green-and-white stripe with piping: a 17 x 20 in (43 x 51 cm) chair cushion, a 37 x 19 in (94 x 48 cm) loveseat cushion, three 17 in (43 cm) pillows, and three 20 x 20 in (51 x 51 cm) plus three 22 x 20 in (56 x 51 cm) couch pieces. The workshop quoted it as one set, and it arrived before her party. She told the workshop she cried when she saw them.
I believe her, neighbor. Here is what I would copy: quote the whole patio as one set so the stripe and the piping match, trace any rounded corners, and put your party date on the order. In Oklahoma, add ties to the list.
A storm-season patio routine
- March: order before the wind gets serious, and ask for ties in writing, with how many and where.
- Pick a carry-in spot, a garage shelf or a closet, with room for every cushion. Each piece should be one person's armful.
- When severe storms are in the forecast, cushions go in first, before the umbrella and the grill cover.
- After a soaking: stand cushions on edge under a roof and get them dry within 24 to 48 hours.
- Red dirt: let it dry, brush it off, then wash the zippered cover at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry it.
- Late fall: Oklahoma City averages 76 freezing nights a year. Store cushions clean, dry and off the concrete.

Buyer questions: ties, tufts and a house full of paws
- A common question
Can you use Velcro instead of ties to hold the cushions on the frame?
The workshop's answerVelcro isn't offered at the moment. Ties can go wherever you want them, and a non-slip bottom is another way to keep cushions from moving.
- A common question
Can you make water-repellent outdoor cushions with ties and no piping?
The workshop's answerYes, from the outdoor range. One set was a 48 x 24 x 5 in (122 x 61 x 13 cm) seat and a 48 x 18 x 3 in (122 x 46 x 7.5 cm) back, no piping, with ties at the two corners of the long sides. Outdoor floor cushions can use the same fabrics.
- A common question
Can I have a tufted cushion out by the pool and the fire pit?
The workshop's answerA tufted cushion lets water inside even in outdoor fabric. A plain, non-tufted foam cushion in outdoor fabric is the one to use outside.
- A common question
We have kids, dogs and cats. Which fabric holds up, and is anything claw-proof?
The workshop's answerNo fabric is fully claw-proof. The fabrics are tightly woven without loops, and flat, tight weaves snag much less because claws catch on loops. There is a pet-friendly performance chart with good taupe and neutral tones, so order swatches and let everyone, pets included, test them first.
- A common question
Can I use a fabric from the indoor listing for my patio cushions?
The workshop's answerNo. Indoor-listing fabrics are for indoor use only. Outdoor cushions are ordered through the outdoor listing, where every chart is outdoor-rated, water-repellent and UV-resistant. If you picked an outdoor code from your samples, order it through the outdoor listing too.

Oklahoma porch and patio questions
Should Oklahoma patio cushions stay out during storm season?
Not when severe weather is forecast. Three-fourths of Oklahoma's tornadoes come in April, May and June, and hail rides with the same storms. The fabric is water-repellent, but the foam is not quick-dry, so keep a carry-in spot ready and size each cushion for one person.
Which cushion colors hide Oklahoma's red dirt?
Mid-tones: brick, rust, tan, sage and denim blue. The state soil, Port Silt Loam, is reddish because it weathered from red Permian sandstones, siltstones and shales, and that red shows fastest on white and pale gray. Zippered covers you can wash at 86°F (30°C) do the rest.
Do cushions with ties really hold in Oklahoma wind?
Ties hold a cushion to its frame in everyday wind, which is why they belong on every Oklahoma patio and swing cushion, and April is the windiest month. In a severe storm, though, nothing should stay outside. Ties buy you time, not a pass.
Can cushions stay on a Grand Lake dock all summer?
Use outdoor fabric with ties, and bring the cushions in at night and before storms. The fabric sheds showers and resists UV, but the foam isn't quick-dry and there's no mesh bottom as standard, so a soaked cushion needs 24 to 48 hours under cover to dry.
