Window seat cushions for Idaho homes, cabins and lake houses

Idaho windows are for looking out. The seat below them should stay low and quiet, hold its color in thin bright air, and keep its distance from the stove.

The quick answer

Window seat cushions in Idaho should be firm, 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) thick and sized to the view window, with long runs split into equal pieces. Choose fade-resistant or sun-resistant outdoor fabric where sun and snow glare reach the seat, outdoor or pet-friendly fabric on mudroom benches, and keep every cushion at least 3 ft (91 cm) from a woodstove.

Thin air, bright glass, very little damp

Boise sits at 2,704 ft. It gets 11.51 in (29 cm) of rain a year and 63% of the sunshine possible. July afternoons average about 20% humidity.

Higher up, the light sharpens. The WHO puts UV about 10% higher for every 3,281 ft (1,000 m) you climb, and fresh snow almost doubles the exposure. McCall sits at 5,030 ft. The Sun Valley Lodge, at 5,920 ft. A seat by a south window there takes sun from the sky and glare off the snowfield.

Dry air is kind to a cushion in one way. Mildew rarely starts. It is unkind in two others. Color fades, and dust and static cling.

Winter still counts. Boise sees 119 freezing nights, and McCall averages 132.2 in of snow.

Foothill views, ski condos and lake cabins

Idaho asks for window seats more than most states. It scores 30 on the national search map for window seat cushions, well above the South.

The seats follow the terrain. Foothill new builds set a seat under a wide view window. Ski condos in Sun Valley and McCall tuck a bench beside the glass. Lake cabins around Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint, on Lake Pend Oreille, the state's largest lake at 148 square miles, face the water.

Height is a feeling. A low seat keeps the view whole. Choose 2 or 3 in so the cushion stays below the glass; window seat cushion thickness and the seat height calculator help, and one piece or two settles a long run.

Most of Idaho's precipitation falls between November and May, and much of it comes in on boots and dogs. At the mudroom bench, choose outdoor fabric or a pet-friendly performance weave.

A real project

Fourteen feet of window, one calm seat

A family in the US wrote to the workshop while their window nook was still being built. The seat would be 36 in (91 cm) deep and 14 ft (4.3 m) wide.

Thirty-six inches is deep. It is closer to a daybed than a perch, which suits a window you mean to watch for a long time. Fourteen feet is too long for one cushion, so the family was glad to split it into several pieces that butt together.

They chose smoke. A gray that sits back and lets the window lead.

Writing before the build is finished is a good habit. The carpenter can still move a line. The cushion cannot.

What it taught
Very wide nooks are made in multiple sections that butt together.

Color taken from outside the window

Take the palette from the view. Sage and granite gray in the foothills. Lake blue and pine in the north. Snow white and charcoal in the ski towns.

Saturated colors show a sun line first, where light meets shade; a heathered mid-tone hides it better. Judge swatches on the seat at noon and again at dusk, as screen versus daylight explains. A south window that bakes all afternoon wants outdoor fabric even indoors; see window seat fading.

Bunks, lodges and fireside floor seating live on Mountain West cabin cushions.

An Idaho year at the window

  • Midwinter: sun off fresh snow is strongest at the glass; draw a sheer across south windows at midday.
  • Woodstove season: keep cushions, throws and floor pillows at least 3 ft (91 cm) from the stove.
  • Dry months: vacuum and shake cushions often; dust and static build when the air is this dry.
  • Each change of season: flip and turn reversible cushions so the sun works both faces.
  • Smoke days: bring porch cushions in when ash is forecast, then wash the covers at 86°F (30°C).
  • First frost: lake cabin porch cushions come indoors, dry and breathing.

The view is the upholstery. The cushion is the frame. Keep the frame quiet.

Buyer questions: questions that fit a bright window

  1. A common question

    What's the practical difference between a 2, 3 and 4 in cushion?

    The workshop's answer

2 in is a slim, low-profile pad. 3 in adds cushioning and a fuller look while still sitting neatly. 4 in is noticeably plumper, and 5 in is offered too. Every thickness uses the same firm 32-density foam, and 3 in is a solid middle ground for benches and window seats.

  2. A common question

My window seat runs well over 150 in. Will it be one cushion or several?

    The workshop's answer

You choose, and very long cushions can be split into equal halves. Soft back pillows are different: one 88 in pillow would sag in the middle, so two 44 in pillows are the recommendation.

  3. A common question

Is the linen-look fabric tough enough for dogs that jump up to the window?

    The workshop's answer

It is a natural-look fabric. For homes with dogs or cats the workshop recommends its pet-friendly collection, which stands up far better to claws, jumping and everyday wear, cleans more easily, and suits a bay window where a dog likes to lie.

  4. A common question

What color should I pick so the cushion looks good but doesn't stand out?

    The workshop's answer

That's your call, but tones that pick up what's already in the room, like the sofa or the wood of the furniture, blend in most naturally. Shortlist one or two codes and the workshop sends close-ups, even mock-ups with body and piping swapped.

  5. A common question

The swatches are tiny. Can you send bigger photos of the oatmeal, flax and greige linens?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, close-up phone photos of any code, on request. In one case two codes looked grayer while two others were lighter and warmer. The photos aren't taken with a professional camera, so tones shift with the light; some buyers ask for a shot next to white paper.

Idaho window seat questions

Can a window seat sit next to the woodstove in an Idaho cabin?

Only with room to spare. NFPA advises keeping anything that can burn at least 3 ft (91 cm) from heating equipment, and that includes cushions, throws and the pillows people drop by the hearth.

How much stronger is the sun on a window seat in McCall or Sun Valley?

UV rises about 10% for every 3,281 ft (1,000 m) of elevation, and both towns sit above 5,000 ft; fresh snow almost doubles exposure again. A south-facing seat there wants a sun-resistant fabric and a seasonal flip.

Is dry Idaho air hard on cushions?

Mostly it is kind. Mildew needs damp, and Boise's July afternoons average about 20% humidity. The costs are fading, dust and static, so shake or vacuum cushions often and wash covers at 86°F (30°C), air dried.

Should a lake cabin bench cushion stay out on the dock all summer?

Better not. Outdoor fabric sheds a shower, but it is water-repellent, not sealed, and standard foam takes 24 to 48 hours to dry once soaked. Bring it in when storms cross the lake, or ask about dry-fast foam.
