Custom cushions for South Dakota cabins, ranches and prairie homes
There are two South Dakotas, and a cushion ought to know which one it lives in. Pine, woodsmoke and summer renters out west; wind, hail and a long winter on the eastern prairie.

SaveThe quick answer
Custom cushions in South Dakota should be built for hard use and long winters. Give rental cabins and bunk rooms zip-off covers that wash at 86°F (30°C), plus a spare set. Put a tight performance weave or outdoor fabric on mudroom benches, bring porch cushions in before the first freeze, and keep every cushion at least 3 ft (91 cm) from the woodstove.
East River, West River: two climates to sew for
South Dakotans split their state at the Missouri River, East River and West River, and a cushion ought to know which side it lives on.
West River, Rapid City sits against the Black Hills, where Black Elk Peak climbs to 7,244 ft (2,208 m). The air is dry there: July afternoons average 42% humidity and August 39%. Rapid City logs 172 days a year at or below 32°F (0°C), and April is its snowiest month, 10.1 in (26 cm) of a 48.5 in (123 cm) year. The World Health Organization puts UV about 10% higher for every 3,281 ft (1,000 m) of altitude, so a porch in the Hills takes more sun than the thermometer lets on.
East River is wetter farm country. Sioux Falls gets 27.85 in (71 cm) of precipitation, 45.3 in (115 cm) of snow and 164 freezing days, and August mornings there average 87% humidity. Its July noon UV Index averages about 8.4, very high on the EPA scale.
Both sides get hail. On July 23, 2010, a hailstone that fell at Vivian measured 8 in (20 cm) across and weighed 1.9375 lb, a national record for size and weight. No cushion fabric argues with that. Carry the porch set in when a storm is coming.
Bunk rooms, ranch houses and the bench by the back door
West River homes run to log and pine: cabins and lodges in the ponderosa, a good many of them rented by the week. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally runs ten days from the first Friday in August and has historically drawn around 500,000 people. That is a lot of bunks slept in, my friend, and a lot of covers in the wash.
East River it is farmhouses and postwar ranch houses, and the door everybody uses is the back one, through the mudroom. In the census division that takes in South Dakota, 46% of new homes started in 2024 had a deck. Come fall the pheasant lodges fill up; the 2026 traditional season runs October 17 to January 31. Boots, wet dogs and blaze orange all end up on the same bench.
So the seats repeat themselves. Bunk and daybed mattresses and window seats in the cabins. A mudroom bench at every back door. Floor cushions by the woodstove. And a long lodge bench with a row of boots under it, which the bench cushion builder will sketch for you.
How many turnovers does your cabin see between Memorial Day and the rally?
Cloth, foam and fastening for a South Dakota seat
| Seat | Fabric | Build | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rental cabin bunk | Soft performance weave or velvet | Zippered cover sized to the mattress you have, plus a spare cover set | Covers come off on turnover day; the foam stays put |
| Mudroom or lodge bench | Velvet, the pet-friendly weave, or outdoor fabric for wet dogs | 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm), non-slip base on request | Boots and paws; no fabric is claw-proof |
| Fireside floor cushion | Corduroy or velvet | Plain zippered floor cushion, set at least 3 ft (91 cm) from the stove | Warm cloth, and the stove keeps its clearance |
| Cabin window seat facing the pines | Velvet or linen-look | 3 in (7.5 cm) for a neat, low profile | Altitude sun fades indoor cloth near bright glass |
| Prairie porch or deck bench | Outdoor fabric: woven polyester, water-repellent and UV-resistant | 4 in (10 cm), self piping, ties at the back corners | Wind lifts a loose cushion; hail and winter send it indoors |
Ties and a non-slip base are added only when you ask for them in writing. Covers wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle; the non-slip base never goes in the machine.
A rental, a spare cover set and an honest second thought
A buyer in the US was furnishing a rental home and picked a corduroy floor sofa in water green. The first question was the sensible one: could they have a spare cover set, so one could be in the wash while the other was on the sofa?
The workshop quoted a second set. Then the buyer thought it over and held off, because the covers zip off and go through the machine easily enough. The next message was a practical one: where do the support bars go? Two at the sides, two at the back.
I like that story because it is honest. For a rental, covers that zip off and wash are the must-have, and a spare set is the nice-to-have. In a Black Hills cabin that turns over every few days in August, I would buy the spare. In one that rents six weekends a year, maybe not.
- Measured
- Standard floor sofa, 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm); four support bars, two at the sides and two at the back
- What it taught
- For rentals, removable machine-washable covers matter most; a second set earns its keep in the busiest weeks.
Wine velvet on knotty pine, and other local colors
Velvet remembers. The wine-red mudroom bench at the top of this page already shows where folks sat down to pull their boots on, and that is no fault; a good pile keeps a little of every day. The ivory piping is what keeps that dark cushion from sinking into the pine and beadboard.
Knotty pine is orange-toned, and it will swallow a tan cushion whole. Give it some backbone: wine, forest green, navy, or a busy print on a floor seat that gets kicked around. In a white-painted farmhouse mudroom, a wheat or rust stripe looks right at home.
Whatever you choose, order every piece of a set at once so they share a dye lot, and judge the swatch in your own light. A pine room at four in the afternoon is a different color from a phone screen.

- April: wait out Rapid City's snowiest month before the porch cushions go back out.
- May to August: bring deck and porch cushions in when thunderstorms or hail are forecast, and stand a wet one on edge to dry within 24 to 48 hours.
- Every cabin turnover: zip off bunk covers, wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, air dry and put the spare set on.
- Pheasant season: wipe the mudroom bench with a damp cloth and mild soap after muddy days, and air the cover out.
- Before the first hard freeze: store outdoor cushions dry, off concrete and in something breathable, never sealed in plastic.
- All winter: keep floor cushions, bench cushions and throws at least 3 ft (91 cm) from the woodstove.
Three feet from the stove, a spare cover in the closet, and the porch cushions indoors until April has finished snowing.

Buyer questions: bunks, benches and wind
- A common question
Can you make zippered covers for the bunk mattresses we already have?
The workshop's answerYes. Covers only are ordered through the zippered cover listing, sized to your mattress, with the color written in the personalization box. A linen cover with a hidden zipper was made for a 38 x 80 x 10 in (97 x 203 x 25 cm) twin XL mattress at its full 10 in thickness, with no extra charge for the depth.
- A common question
Can I buy a second set of covers, or covers for only some of the pieces?
The workshop's answerYes. A covers-only listing, with no foam, lets you swap covers while one set is in the wash, or change color. You can also order covers for just some pieces, such as two straight backrests. Ordering the spare with the first set keeps both in one dye lot.
- A common question
Is your linen a performance fabric? Our dogs jump on the bench all day.
The workshop's answerThe linen is a natural-look fabric. For dogs and cats the workshop recommends its pet-friendly collection instead, which stands up far better to claws, jumping and everyday pet wear and is easier to clean. It suits a bench, or a bay window where a dog likes to lie.
- A common question
Can you make outdoor cushions with ties and no piping for a bench that catches the wind?
The workshop's answerYes, in the water-resistant outdoor range. One set was a 48 x 24 x 5 in (122 x 61 x 12.5 cm) seat and a 48 x 18 x 3 in (122 x 46 x 7.5 cm) back, no piping, with ties at the two corners of the long sides. Floor cushions can be made in the same outdoor fabrics.

South Dakota cushion questions
Can porch cushions stay out through a South Dakota winter?
No. Sioux Falls averages 164 days a year at or below 32°F (0°C) and Rapid City 172. Water that gets into standard foam freezes, thaws and never quite dries, so store outdoor cushions dry, off concrete and in something breathable until spring.
When is it safe to put cushions back on a Black Hills porch?
Later than the first warm weekend. April is Rapid City's snowiest month on average, 10.1 in (26 cm) of a 48.5 in (123 cm) year, and May is its wettest at 3.45 in (8.8 cm). Keep the cushions near the door through spring storms.
How far should a fireside cushion sit from a cabin woodstove?
At least 3 ft (91 cm). The NFPA says to keep anything that can burn that far from heating equipment, woodstoves included. Measure the distance before you size a floor cushion or a bench along the stove wall, and count throws and pillows too.
What fabric suits a pheasant-lodge mudroom bench?
A tight, wipe-clean weave or outdoor fabric. The pet-friendly weave is 100% polyester, quoted at about 88,000 Martindale and washable at 86°F (30°C). Outdoor fabric is the rugged choice for wet dogs. No fabric is claw-proof, and a non-slip base keeps the cushion in place.
