Window seat cushions for Utah homes, ski condos and desert houses
Utah light is generous and its air is dry. A window seat here fades long before it mildews, so the order starts with the light.

SaveThe quick answer
Window seat cushions in Utah should be planned for strong sun and dry air, not damp. Choose a 3 in (7.5 cm) profile for a calm view seat, colors that fade quietly, or UV-resistant outdoor fabric for the sunniest glass, and zip-off covers. Salt Lake City's July noon UV averages about 10.4, and its July afternoons average 21% humidity.
A state that fades before it mildews
Salt Lake City is bright. The sun shines for 66% of the possible hours in a year, and 85% in July.
The July noon UV Index averages about 10.4. That is very high on the EPA scale, and level with Denver.
The air is dry. Afternoon humidity averages 43% across the year and 21% in July. Mildew rarely settles on a Utah window seat. Fading does.
Altitude sharpens it. Park City sits at 6,936 ft (2,114 m), and the World Health Organization puts UV about 10% higher for every 3,281 ft (1,000 m). Fresh snow almost doubles exposure. A condo seat facing a white slope takes light from the sky and from the ground.
Winter has its gray weeks. December sunshine in Salt Lake City drops to 39%, and a typical winter brings about six multi-day inversions. On those days the window is still the brightest seat in the house.
Bungalow bays, ramblers and a lot of glass
On the search map, Utah sits among the top ten states for window seat cushions and near the bottom for outdoor cushions. The houses explain it.
Salt Lake City built thousands of bungalows around 1910, many east, west and south of Liberty Park. The city's preservation handbook lists their marks: broad front porches, rectangular bay windows, large plate-glass windows. A rectangular bay is a shallow trapezoid. Measure every edge and let the bay window calculator check the angles.
After the war came the ranch house, often called a rambler, built in great numbers from about 1946 to 1970. Newer houses bring bonus rooms and wide view windows. Park City condos keep a bench by the door for ski boots. In St. George, July highs average 101°F (38°C) and a year brings only 8.80 in (22 cm) of rain.
So each room asks for its own seat. A window seat cushion under the view. A mudroom bench cushion at the condo door. Floor cushions in the bonus room. Outdoor cushions on the desert patio.
Which way does your window face?
Utah seats, measured for light
| Seat | Fabric | Profile | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Picture-window seat facing south or west | Mid-tone linen-look, or outdoor fabric for full sun | 3 in (7.5 cm), piping in the same fabric | Indoor fabrics have limited UV resistance; outdoor fabric is UV-resistant |
| Bungalow rectangular bay | Linen-look or bouclé | Trapezoid cut from a drawing, 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) | Old bays are rarely square |
| Park City condo boot bench | Pet-friendly performance weave or outdoor fabric | 3 in (7.5 cm), non-slip base on request | Snowmelt, ski boots and dogs |
| Bonus-room floor seating | Corduroy or the soft performance weave | Floor cushions or a low floor sofa, zip-off covers | Children use every surface |
| St. George patio bench | Outdoor fabric: woven polyester, water-repellent and UV-resistant | 4 in (10 cm), self piping | Strong desert sun; shade and storage extend its life |
Tell the workshop which way the window faces. A seat in afternoon sun is a different job from one in north light.
A deep window seat that became a lounge
A couple in the US had a window seat in a new house, about 26 in (66 cm) deep and 98 in (249 cm) long. They chose orange corduroy.
They weighed 6 in (15 cm) against 8 in (20 cm) and chose 6. On a seat that deep, 6 felt right to them. Height is a feeling.
They added two bolsters, 8 in (20 cm) across and 26 in (66 cm) long, one for each end. Later they came back for a back cushion 90 in (229 cm) long, 11 in (28 cm) high and 3 in (7.5 cm) deep. They preferred the corduroy lines running vertically, and the workshop checked that with production first.
Three kinds of piece, ordered in two steps. Giving the same fabric code the second time kept everything matched.
- Measured
- Seat about 26 x 98 x 6 in (66 x 249 x 15 cm); two bolsters 8 in (20 cm) across and 26 in (66 cm) long; back cushion 90 x 11 x 3 in (229 x 28 x 7.5 cm)
- What it taught
- Bolsters and a slim back turn a deep window seat into a lounge; give the fabric code again when you add pieces later.
Color for a bright, dry room
Choose color in the light it will live in. A west window in July is not a showroom.
Saturated colors show fading first, and pile fabrics shift tone as the light moves. Keep velvet out of a bay that bakes all afternoon. Sand, oatmeal, sage and warm gray change more quietly. For the brightest glass, the outdoor range is UV-resistant and works indoors too, though it is less soft than velvet. Fading behind glass explains the rest.
In St. George the rock outside is already red. Let it be the color. A sand cushion and one terracotta pillow are enough.
Snow on the ground. Sun on the glass. A cushion chosen for both.

SaveA year at a Utah window
- January, inversion weeks: keep sitting by the window, and lift the cushion to air if cold glass leaves its back edge damp.
- February and March, snow on the ground: flip or turn the window seat cushion so one face does not take all the light.
- April: wash covers at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, inside out, and air dry them. Dry air does the rest.
- June to August: draw a sheer at midday on south and west windows. July noon UV averages about 10.4.
- October: before the first freeze, bring Salt Lake patio cushions in dry and store them off concrete.
- St. George summers: keep patio cushions in shade or indoors when no one is sitting on them.
In Utah a window seat fades before it mildews. Choose its color in the window's own light.

Buyer questions: thickness, overhang and color
- A common question
What thickness should a window seat cushion be?
The workshop's answerThe standard options are 2, 3, 4 and 5 in (5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 cm). Most buyers choose 3 or 4 in: 3 in gives a neater, lower profile on a window seat, and 4 in gives more cushioning. The listing photos are mostly 3 to 4 in.
- A common question
My wooden window seat is 12 in deep. Can the cushion be 14 in deep and hang 2 in over the front edge?
The workshop's answerYes. An overhang of up to 2 in (5 cm) is common and won't damage the cushion, because the high-density foam keeps its shape and the front edge stays structured. For extra support the foam can be made slightly firmer, with an inner support wrap so the edge holds for years.
- A common question
Why does the fabric look darker in my room than in the listing photos?
The workshop's answerListing photos are taken in natural daylight. Warm bulbs, dark walls, shadows and screen settings can make a color look deeper; a green can read as mossy. The workshop asks for a photo taken near a window in daylight before deciding what to do.
- A common question
Can I add padding or an extra seat cushion to make a floor sofa higher?
The workshop's answerYes, at extra cost: an extra 78 x 39 x 6.5 in (198 x 99 x 16.5 cm) seat cushion, or added padding. On one set, padding raised the height from the floor to the top of the backrest from 16 to 20 in (41 to 51 cm). A floor sofa stays low, so it may not suit guests who need a standard seat height.
- A common question
Can I use a fabric from your indoor listing for patio cushions?
The workshop's answerNo. Fabrics on the indoor listings are for indoor use only. Outdoor cushions are ordered through the outdoor listing and made from its charts, which are all outdoor-rated, water-repellent and UV-resistant. An outdoor code chosen from samples is ordered through the outdoor listing too.

Utah window seat questions
Do window seat cushions fade faster in Utah?
In bright rooms, yes. Salt Lake City's July noon UV Index averages about 10.4, and the WHO puts UV about 10% higher per 3,281 ft (1,000 m) of altitude. Indoor fabrics have limited UV resistance; outdoor fabric has a UV-resistant finish and works indoors.
Is mildew a worry on a Utah window seat?
Much less than in humid states. Salt Lake City's afternoon humidity averages 43% for the year and 21% in July. Cold winter glass can still leave condensation on the sill, so wipe it and let the cushion air if its edge feels damp.
What works on a ski condo bench by the door in Park City?
A tight, wipe-clean weave or outdoor fabric, about 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, with a non-slip base if the bench top is slick. The pet-friendly weave is 100% polyester and washes at 86°F (30°C). No fabric is claw-proof.
Can patio cushions live outside in St. George?
In use, yes; in storage, no. July highs average 101°F (38°C), so keep cushions in shade or indoors between uses. The outdoor fabric is UV-resistant and water-repellent, but the foam is not quick-dry, so dry a cushion through after a storm.
