Tiny house floor cushions: frameless seating for lofts and studios
A frame is a fine thing until it meets a narrow door and a loft ladder. These eight small houses, cabins and studios kept the comfort and let the frame go.
SaveThe quick answer
Tiny house floor cushions work best frameless: foam and fabric with no legs, in pieces that fit through a normal door. Check overall height and opened length before fabric; one modular floor sofa stands 29 in (74 cm) tall with a 14 in (36 cm) seat. Two 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm) seat mattresses side by side make roughly a king bed.
Why the frame stays behind
Rigid furniture loses in a tiny house. It loses at the door, at the loft ladder, and again the first night company stays over with nowhere to sleep.
I learned this trade on hardwood frames, and I still love a good one. But in a house on wheels or a studio over a garage, the frame is the part that won't turn the corner. Take it away and what is left is foam, fabric and an honest seam: modular floor sofas and floor cushions with no legs at all.
Two numbers come before fabric: overall height, and the length the seating opens to for sleeping. One buyer in the US asked for the heights before delivery: each seat layer 6.5 to 7 in (17 to 18 cm), a 13 to 14 in (33 to 36 cm) seat, and about 28 in (71 cm) overall with the 14 in (36 cm) backrest. The seat height calculator checks that against your knees and your ceiling.
Most of these places ended in corduroy or cotton-linen. Corduroy is a living cloth; run a hand down the wale and it answers. How wide is the narrowest door between the driveway and the spot where you will sit?
Eight lofts, trailers and tiny houses on the cutting table
01A past project
A frameless floor sofa for a tiny house on wheels
A parent in the US wanted a frameless floor sofa for a tiny house on wheels: about 77 in (196 cm) wide, no taller than 30 in (76 cm), opening to 60 to 65 in (152 to 165 cm) for sleeping. The workshop pointed to its modular corduroy sofa, 78.5 in (199 cm) wide, 29 in (74 cm) high and 39 in (99 cm) deep with a 14 in (36 cm) seat. It sent those numbers first, so the family could check them against the wall.
The takeaway: Hold overall height and opened length against the real walls before choosing fabric.
02A past project
Three grays tried in green window light
A buyer in the US planned an L-shaped floor sofa for a tiny house in the woods with cedar walls and a yellow carpet: two 24 x 48 in (61 x 122 cm) cushions, re-measured to 20 x 44 in (51 x 112 cm), plus backs and arms. They asked to see smoke, anthracite and a mid gray against black accent pillows and green window light. Then the quantities got muddled between the personalization box and the cart, the buyer read it as a price change, and walked away.
The takeaway: Settle every piece and its quantity in writing before checkout.
03A past project
A studio sofa on a king-size tatami platform
A buyer in the US moving into a small studio asked whether the floor sofa could sit on a king-size tatami platform bed. The workshop confirmed the sofa is 39 x 78 in (99 x 198 cm), and that its seat cushions side by side make roughly a king bed. The buyer chose to wait and check the layout with the furniture in place.
The takeaway: Measure a studio with the bed and table where they will actually live.
04A past project
Royal-blue corduroy on a daybed in a tiny renovated house
A buyer wrote in from a tiny house under renovation, wanting royal-blue corduroy covers for an IKEA Hemnes daybed with a thicker look, sized for a mattress about 8 in (20 cm) deep, plus a spare cover. The workshop confirmed any size was possible. After the long renovation they came back for the plumper back and side cushions from the earlier photos.
The takeaway: Give the real mattress depth, not the frame size.
05A past project
A futon-style floor mattress with cotton fill only
One buyer wrote in needing a firm futon-style floor mattress, 53 x 75 x 4 in (135 x 190 x 10 cm), filled only with cotton because of an allergy to synthetics. The usual fill is dense silicone-ball fiber, but the workshop agreed to make it all-cotton. The quote came in over the buyer's budget.
The takeaway: Natural fills add cost and feel different from fiber clusters, so raise them early.
06A past project
A trailer, two service dogs and every swatch at once
A buyer messaged the workshop while renovating a trailer on a very tight budget, wanting floor seating for themselves and two service dogs, with a bigger custom job planned later. They were weighing dark grays, a muted rust, cobalt blue and sage. The workshop's advice: one color sample purchase brings swatches of every color.
The takeaway: Buy the cushion once, cry once: live with the full swatch set before a big custom job.
07A past project
Two floor sofas that use the wall as their back
A buyer messaged the workshop wanting natural fillings for two floor sofas set against the wall: 63 x 28.3 x 7 in (160 x 72 x 18 cm) and 55 x 28.3 x 7 in (140 x 72 x 18 cm). The workshop offered cotton fill at extra cost and an all-cotton linen fabric. The standard 4 in (10 cm) backrest went to about 4 3/4 in (12 cm).
The takeaway: Decide fill and backrest thickness together; the backrest eats into seat depth.
08A past project
A 59 in square floor mattress made as two halves
One buyer wrote in wanting a plain floor mattress about 59 x 59 in (150 x 150 cm) for a minimalist bedroom, bone white with no ruffles. The workshop suggested two 29.5 x 59 in (75 x 150 cm) pieces: easier to make, ship and handle, and they lie together as one square.
The takeaway: Split any mattress too big for the tightest turn in the house.
What each piece asks of a small house
Every piece in a small house earns its place twice, my friend: once by day as a seat and once by night as a bed, or it goes. Here is what each shape asked for in these builds.
| Piece | Size | Why it suits a small place | from past orders |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modular corduroy floor sofa | 78.5 x 39 in (199 x 99 cm), 29 in (74 cm) tall, 14 in (36 cm) seat | No legs or frame; the pieces fit through a normal door | The tiny house on wheels |
| Seat mattresses side by side | Each 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm), about a twin XL | A sofa by day, roughly a king bed by night | The studio on a tatami platform |
| Futon-style floor mattress | 53 x 75 x 4 in (135 x 190 x 10 cm) | Firm sleeping near the floor; cotton fill on request | The allergy-minded sleeper |
| Wall-backed floor sofa | 63 x 28.3 x 7 in (160 x 72 x 18 cm) | The wall does the frame's work | The pair in cotton-linen |
| Floor mattress in two halves | Two 29.5 x 59 in (75 x 150 cm) pieces | Easier to make, ship and carry | The minimalist bedroom |
Through the door vacuum-packed, and a rug so the foam stays put
Frameless seating travels small. Cushion sets and floor sofas are vacuum-compressed, so seat, backrest and armrests fit a flat parcel that looks too small to be honest. A big order can come as up to 5 tracked parcels.
Open every piece the day it lands, since foam left squeezed for several weeks can be damaged. Most pieces fill out in 24 to 36 hours and reach full firmness in 3 to 5 days, and a shake helps. The Pattern on the first 72 hours walks through it.
Foam on a smooth floor walks when somebody sits down hard. Put a rug or grip mat under it, use every connector bar, and set felt pads under the metal. Before buying, read is a floor sofa right for you; for one-wall studios, see small apartment floor sofa layouts.
In a tiny house, pick the floor sofa by two numbers before any fabric: overall height, like 29 in (74 cm), and the length it opens to for sleeping.

Small-space questions
- A common question
Is there a floor sofa with no legs or frame at all, just cushions and fabric?
The workshop's answerYes. For a single sofa with no side return, such as in a tiny house on wheels, the workshop points to its modular corduroy sofa: 78.5 in (199 cm) wide, 29 in (74 cm) high and 39 in (99 cm) deep, with a 14 in (36 cm) seat height and a 78.5 x 39 in seat. There are no wooden or metal legs, only cushions and fabric.
- A common question
When the floor sofa is laid flat for guests, what bed size does it make?
The workshop's answerEach seat mattress is 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm), about a US twin XL. Side by side they make about 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm), roughly king size, which suits a king-size tatami platform. The corner version with its ottoman lays out larger than a king, with room for 2 adults and 2 children.
- A common question
The box that arrived is tiny. Is the whole cushion set really inside?
The workshop's answerAlmost always, yes: cushions, floor cushion sets and sofas are vacuum-compressed, so a full set of seat, backrest and armrests fits in a surprisingly small, flat parcel, and nothing needs extra stuffing. Accept the delivery and open everything promptly, because foam left compressed for several weeks can be damaged. The foam expands in about 36 to 48 hours and firms up over a couple of days; a shake helps. If anything is genuinely missing, photograph what came and message the workshop with the tracking numbers.
- A common question
How many metal bars hold up the backrests, and are they in the box?
The workshop's answerThey are included, and the backrests and armrests need them. A single sofa comes with 4 bars, a 3-seater uses 5 pieces, the L-shape with ottoman 6, and a full corner set 8 large and 8 small. A plain ottoman needs none. Bars may ship in their own parcel with set-up instructions, and any missing piece is sent again free. Because the sofa comes in separate pieces, it fits through a normal door.

Questions buyers ask next
How tall does a frameless floor sofa sit with the backrest on?
One buyer in the US checked the standard model before delivery: each seat layer is 6.5 to 7 in (17 to 18 cm), the seat 13 to 14 in (33 to 36 cm), and the whole sofa about 28 in (71 cm) tall with its 14 in (36 cm) backrest. The modular corduroy model stands 29 in (74 cm).
Will floor seating slide around on a tiny house's hard floor?
It can, since light foam on a smooth floor moves when someone sits. A rug or grip mat underneath helps, as do all the connector bars and felt pads under the metal. The standard floor sofa also has nonslip fabric on its underside for pieces laid side by side.
Can one very large floor mattress be sewn in a single piece?
Big squares are usually split. A 59 x 59 in (150 x 150 cm) floor mattress was proposed as two 29.5 x 59 in (75 x 150 cm) halves. Halves are easier to make, ship and carry through a narrow door or up a loft stair, and they lie together as one.
How much can the standard floor sofa length change?
The standard length is 78.7 in (200 cm). It can be shortened, or stretched to about 82 to 83 in (210 cm), through the order note, and smaller sizes cost the same. The seat mattress thickness, about 6.5 in (17 cm) per layer, cannot be changed.
