The quick answer

A U-shaped banquette cushion set is ordered as three straight cushions, one per run, never one horseshoe piece. Measure each run on its own, decide which pieces own the two back corners, and subtract their depth from the pieces that butt against them. One US nook was two 63.5 x 21.5 in sides and a 93.5 x 21.5 in back run, all 2 in thick, piped as standard.

Shapes to choose from

Every one is cut to your measurements. The number is how many readings the atelier has published for that shape.

Sizes & measuring

Sizing the three runs

Right, then. One run at a time, one unit for the whole drawing, and never assume the two sides match.

A horseshoe is three straight lines

A restaurant booth with a 14 ft run and two 24 in ends was planned as three pads, not one horseshoe. Every U-shaped banquette works the same way, from a diner booth to a camper dinette to the breakfast nook around a pedestal table.

A U-shaped banquette cushion set covers a bench that wraps a table on three sides. It is ordered as one straight cushion per run, because separate pieces sit more neatly, handle more easily and come off for washing one at a time. The two back corners are where the thinking goes: one piece runs into each corner, and the piece that butts against it is shortened. If your bench turns only one corner, see L-shaped corner bench cushions; straight built-ins are under banquette cushions, and camper dinettes under boat, camper and RV cushions.

Sills, cutouts and odd corners

Plenty of U-shaped nooks aren't three clean rectangles. A window sill can overhang two of the seats, a table pedestal can crowd a corner, and one end may be angled. Each of those is a notch, a cutout or a trapezoid, and each goes on the drawing with its width, depth and position.

The check that saves the day is simple arithmetic: on a stepped or notched piece, the edge measurements on each side must add up to the same total. If they don't, somebody's tape slipped. For angled corners, use two rectangles and one trapezoid so every seam lands on a seat edge. The trapezoid cushion calculator handles the slope, and notched cushions covers the cutouts.

Piping and fabric for a table everyone shares

On a U the piping runs around three sides of the room, so a wandering welt has nowhere to hide. Choose it by exact code. Stripe collections have no matching solids, so solid piping comes from another chart and may sit a shade off. Self-piping cut from the stripe itself is the surest match; see self-piping and piping: matching, contrast or none.

  • Performance and pet-friendly weaves: a buyer in the US chose a taupe pet-friendly fabric with welting for a U-shaped banquette in a home with pets.
  • Striped cotton and ticking: charming and washable at 86°F (30°C), but 100% cotton stains more easily than a performance weave.
  • Velvet: a repeat customer chose it for all four pieces of a kitchen dinette.
  • Outdoor acrylic for a terrace banquette like the taupe masonry one in our gallery.

Foam, thickness and the seat depth trap

Standard foam is high-density, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), firm enough that a family nook cushion only 2.5 in thick is comfortable. Thickness is a table decision first. Dinette seats have gone to 8 in; kitchen nooks more often go thinner.

Seat depth is the number that bites. A repeat customer with a U-shaped dinette first sent a 15.5 in deep main seat, realized it was too shallow, and made the back cushion 4 in deep so the seat could be 17.5 in. Seat depth is bench depth minus backrest thickness, and it needs checking before production, not after. Have you measured your bench depth with the back cushions in place, or without? Work it through in the seat height calculator and back cushion height.

A real project

The breakfast nook with a window sill in the way

A family in the US needed three cushions for a U-shaped breakfast nook. Two of them had to be cut out around a window sill that overhung the seats, and they worried, reasonably, about food stains.

The workshop was plain with them. The navy ticking stripe they loved (N29) is 100% cotton and stains more easily, but everything washes at 86°F (30°C). The firm foam made 2.5 in comfortable, so there was no need to go thicker. Solid navy piping might not exactly match the navy in the stripe. And when the numbers came in, the third piece was out by 2 1/4 in; the family re-measured before a single cut was made.

I'll confess, dear, that I once trusted a drawing without adding up both sides. Never again.

What it taught
For stepped cutouts, the edge measurements on each side must add up to the same total.

My U-shaped checklist, in red ink

  • Mixing inches and centimeters. A size like 80 x 30 x 5 with no unit can be read either way; write the unit after every number.
  • Giving each side's full wall length when the back run owns the corners. Subtract the corner cushion's depth, or both corners are counted twice.
  • Describing piping as the blue in the stripe. Choose it by exact code from a solid chart, or go self-piped.
  • Measuring seat depth without the back cushions. Seat depth is bench depth minus backrest thickness.
  • Forgetting to repeat piping yes or no, and its code, on a remake or replacement.

A U-shaped banquette is three straight cushions, one per run. Put the unit after every number on the drawing: in or cm, never both on one page.

Styling a U, and the Patterns that do the arithmetic

A U puts everyone face to face, so the cushions become the backdrop to every meal. The charcoal-and-ivory dotted weave in our gallery lets a round oak pedestal table be the star; the taupe terrace banquette leans on crisp white pillows and a parasol. Matching lumbar pillows can be made at a set height, such as 12 in, in custom lengths, which finishes a long back run without a crowd of throw pillows; see lumbar pillows.

Then plan it properly. Lay out the three runs in the 3D bench cushion builder and measure with U-shaped banquette cushions: measuring three runs. If the U lives on wheels, read RV and camper dinette cushions; cafés and rentals should start with cushions for cafés, rentals and offices.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

How do I order cushions for a U-shaped banquette around our kitchen table?

    The workshop's answer

Order each straight run as its own cushion rather than one bent piece; separate pieces are easier to handle and sit more neatly. One U was two sides of 63.5 x 21.5 in and a back of 93.5 x 21.5 in. Watch the corners: a side piece is its total run minus the depth of the cushion sitting in the corner. Write the thickness and fabric code for each piece; piping comes as standard. For very large banquettes, send measurements and the workshop will say how to structure the order.

  2. A common question

Do you make U-shaped dinette cushions for a camper or trailer?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, U-shaped vehicle and dinette seating is made regularly. Send a drawing with every run of the U, the depth and the thickness you want, plus a photo of the space; to recover an existing camper set, send a template or drawing of each cushion. Each piece is sized separately, and seats can be 8 in thick or more. The workshop reviews the drawing before quoting.

  3. A common question

Can you make booth cushions for a restaurant or a client's project?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send a drawing with every dimension, all in inches or all in centimeters, never mixed, plus your fabric codes. The workshop checks the drawing for inconsistencies, such as two 50 in cushions on a 103 in run, before quoting. U-shaped and long booths are made as separate pads, with matching lumbar pillows in custom lengths if you want them. Trade and bulk orders have been quoted as one set, with production and delivery times given alongside the quote.

  4. A common question

Can the piping be a solid that matches one color in my striped fabric?

    The workshop's answer

Sometimes. Stripe collections have no solid in the same tone, so solid piping comes from another chart, such as the velvets, and may not match exactly. The workshop picks the closest shade from hundreds of fabrics under natural light, for example linen L-43 as piping for stripe N23. Thin stripes can't be cut into a solid strip. Self-piping from the same fabric is the surest match, and if you don't choose, the workshop asks before production.

  5. A common question

One of our banquette cushions arrived shorter than we ordered. What happens now?

    The workshop's answer

Send the workshop a photo with a tape measure along the full dimension. When the workshop made the error in past cases, it remade only the parts that didn't fit, didn't ask for the wrong one back, and let the piping color change on the replacement; a partial refund was the alternative. Remakes shipped by FedEx with tracking.

Before you order a U

Which cushion owns the corners in a U-shaped banquette?

Decide before you measure. In the usual build the long back cushion runs into both corners, and each side piece is its total run minus that cushion's depth. Write the choice in the order note so the set is cut to match.

Are back cushions for a U-shaped banquette ordered separately?

Yes. Listing prices are per single cushion, so each back cushion is its own item at its own size, marked 'backrest' in the note. Remember that a 4 in deep back cushion takes 4 in off the usable seat depth.

Can U-shaped dinette seats be thicker than 4 inches?

Yes. Standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm), but dinette seats have been made 8 in thick and more. Nooks at a fixed table usually go the other way, at 2 in or 2.5 in.

Can the covers on a U-shaped kitchen banquette go in the washing machine?

Yes. Every foam cushion has a zippered, fully removable cover, and covers wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. That includes 100% cotton ticking, which stains more easily than a performance weave but still washes.

What should the order note for a U-shaped set say?

Each piece's size with its unit, which piece owns each corner, the thickness, the fabric code, and the piping code or 'no piping'. Ask for a photo of the pieces before they ship, and repeat the piping spec on any remake.

How long does a U-shaped banquette set take to make?

It depends on the number of pieces, the fabric and the season: three runs plus backs is more cutting and sewing than one bench, and the production time comes with the quote. Send final measurements before you order, because a finished custom piece usually can't be altered; sizes can still be corrected if you message quickly after checkout.
