A Reading by NateU-Shaped Banquette Cushions
Taupe U-shaped banquette cushions, with a ledger of every prop
A built-in U above the sea, one cushion per run, and six props that each have a job. Field notes, in order.
SaveThe quick answer
A U-shaped banquette cushion set works best as one pad per run, each cut to its own plinth and butted tight at the corners. Measure every run along the back wall and along the front edge, and keep the whole sketch in one unit. On a bright terrace, warm taupe hides footprints that white would show.
Field notes: a U on a terrace
Page one, top line: a whitewashed masonry banquette, U-shaped, on a stone terrace above a pool and the sea. Warm taupe box cushions, self piped, one per run.
Built-ins are where made-to-measure earns its keep, partner. Every run is a different length, and the corners meet where no stock cushion fits. Each seat is cut to its own plinth and butted tight.
The cushions are deep but fairly slim, so the rendered masonry line stays visible. Deep seats invite lounging; a firmer foam keeps them from feeling saggy.
Why taupe, not white? Midday light off pale stone. White would glare and show every footprint. Taupe holds, and the white moves to the pillows, where it repeats the whitewash and a blue dome across the water.
One note from the pins: built-in plinths need drainage gaps, or rain pools under the foam.
The U-shaped banquette guide lays out the measuring, the shapes live under U-shaped cushions, and the fabric under outdoor acrylic. How many runs does your banquette have?
Five pins on the plan
Five pins, from the long taupe run to the cream parasol overhead.

- Long taupe seat run
Each run is cut to its own plinth length so the cushions butt tightly at the corners.
- Rendered masonry base
Built-in plinths need drainage gaps, otherwise rain pools under the foam.
- White pillow pair
White pillows repeat the whitewashed walls and the domed chapel beyond.
- Front seat section
Seats this deep invite lounging; a firmer foam stops them feeling saggy.
- Cream shade parasol
Shade matters: even outdoor fabric fades faster in full southern sun.

Prop ledger: what each object is doing
| Prop | Its job | Copy it with |
|---|---|---|
| White square pillows | Repeat the whitewashed walls | Pillows in your wall or trim color |
| Cream parasol, teak pole | Shade; even outdoor fabric fades faster in full sun | Shade over the seat at midday |
| Teak side table | A landing spot, so nothing sits on the cushion | A small table within reach of the corner |
| Glass of water, hardback | Say someone sits here, and for a while | Two objects, no more |
| Palms, agave, bougainvillea | Green and one hot magenta against taupe | Planters at the ends of the U |
| Stone flag paving | Grounds the warm taupe | A cushion one step off your floor color |
A 14 ft booth, three pads, one unit
A restaurant owner in the US wrote to the workshop needing booth seats for a U-shaped layout: two end pads of 24 x 19 in (61 x 48 cm) and one long pad of 14 ft x 19 in (427 x 48 cm), within a few weeks.
The workshop recommended three separate pads rather than one long piece, and asked for final measurements in one unit only. Mixing feet, inches and centimeters on one sketch is how a 14 ft pad becomes a puzzle. Production and delivery were confirmed at 1 to 2 weeks.
Same rule on a terrace at home: split a long U into pads, one unit throughout.
Measurement table
| Layout | U-shaped built-in masonry banquette, one cushion per run |
|---|---|
| Fabric | Warm taupe outdoor acrylic, box edge |
| Piping | Self piping, taupe |
| Proportion | Deep seats, fairly slim cushions |
| Measure | Each run along the back wall and along the front edge |
| Units | One unit for the whole sketch |
| Underside | Same fabric all around, unless you add the non-slip base |
| Plinths | Leave drainage gaps |

Measure each run of a U-shaped banquette twice: along the back wall and along the front edge. At the corners the two numbers often differ.

Margin questions
- A common question
Is the underside of the cushion the same fabric as the top?
The workshop's answerYes, the cushion is the same fabric all around. The one exception is the non-slip base option, which replaces the bottom panel with non-slip fabric.
- A common question
Can I have double piping in a contrasting velvet, and throw pillow covers to match?
The workshop's answerYes. Bench cushions of 104 x 18 in and 59 x 18 in in emerald velvet were made with double piping in pale pink velvet, plus four matching 18 x 18 in throw pillow covers with the same piping, free of charge.
- A common question
Can I order more backrest pillows later, one straight and one L-shaped?
The workshop's answerYes. Extra straight and L-shaped backrest pillows can be ordered at any time.
Questions buyers ask next
Why taupe instead of white for a sunny terrace banquette?
In bright light off pale stone, pure white glares and shows every footprint. A warm taupe holds its color and hides traffic, while white pillows still repeat the whitewashed walls.
Should a long U-shaped banquette be one cushion or several?
Several. Each run gets its own pad cut to its own length and butted tight at the corners. Even a single 14 ft booth run was split into separate pads on the workshop's advice.
Do built-in masonry benches need anything under the cushions?
A way for water to leave. Built-in plinths without drainage gaps let rain pool under the foam, so plan the drainage before measuring for the cushions.
