Custom cushions for Maryland rowhouses, bay houses and sailboats

Maryland gives a cushion two jobs and a short commute: a kitchen banquette in a Baltimore rowhouse, and a porch or a cockpit an hour away on the Bay. Right, then. One checklist for each.

The quick answer

Custom cushions for Maryland homes come in two kits: indoors, rowhouse banquettes want firm 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) cushions that sit 10 to 12 in below the tabletop, in a tight, washable weave. On Chesapeake porches and boats, use water-repellent outdoor fabric, rinse off salt, and store cushions dry before Baltimore's 93 freezing nights.

A rowhouse city on a salty bay

Half of Baltimore's roughly 251,000 occupied homes are attached single-family houses. That one fact explains most custom cushions in Maryland: long, narrow rooms, a table pushed to the wall, and a bench built to meet it.

Baltimore averages 45 in (114 cm) of rain over 117 wet days, 32 days at 90°F (32°C) or above, and then 93 freezing nights and about 19 in (49 cm) of snow. The Chesapeake, the largest estuary in the United States, adds 11,684 miles of shoreline with its tributaries, and salt spray has sped corrosion as far as 5 to 10 miles inland. For Philadelphia's rows and the Jersey Shore, see our Mid-Atlantic reading.

Two rooms deep, with the nook at the back

Early Federal rowhouses were two stories high and two rooms deep; later daylight rowhouses ran wider and added front porches. Narrow houses turn the kitchen into a corridor, which is why banquette cushions in Baltimore are usually a straight run or a tight L.

My confession, dear: I once cut a handsome banquette cushion to the bench and never measured the table. Elbows at ears, all dinner long. A banquette cushion should sit 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) below the tabletop, usually 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) of firm foam, and back cushions take about 3 in of seat depth. The table-height guide has the chart; the seat height calculator does the sums.

What does your tabletop measure from the floor? Then browse banquette cushions or, for a corner, L-shaped cushions.

Marble steps, painted screens and the window seat behind them

Baltimore's white marble steps came mostly from Baltimore County quarries; Beaver Dam alone is estimated to have supplied 60% of them. Since 1913, painted window screens have given front rooms privacy and a breeze at once.

That front room, its tall window over the stoop, is where window seat cushions in Maryland earn their keep; see window seats. Brick, marble and a painted screen already make a busy palette, so I reach for navy ticking or a solid with one straight contrast welt, which draws the line the eye follows on a narrow seat.

Annapolis, the Eastern Shore and cushions that go to sea

Annapolis has long been known as America's Sailing Capital, and skipjacks still race at Deal Island over Labor Day weekend. On the Eastern Shore, the porch and the dock do the living; in the census division that includes Maryland, 74% of new homes started in 2024 had a porch.

Boat cushions for Annapolis sailors start with a traced template of the plywood base, as the V-berth guide shows. The workshop builds them in regular seat foam and water-repellent outdoor fabric, not quick-dry foam, so they suit a cabin or covered cockpit, or go below when weather comes in. Maryland outdoor cushions for porch benches take the same outdoor fabric; water-repellent vs waterproof explains the difference.

A real project

Eleven and a half feet of kitchen bench, and two cats

A household in the US with two grown cats asked for a fabric the cats wouldn't want to scratch, and got the pet-friendly chart. The bench was the kind a long kitchen produces: one cushion 21 x 138 5/8 in, just 2 in thick, well over 11 ft.

They chose a tight weave with double piping in a second color. The clever part was the zipper, along the long side, so the cushion could be flipped and turned and no single seat would wear alone.

One honest line: no fabric is claw-proof. A tight weave simply gives claws less to catch; see pet-friendly cushion fabric.

What it taught
With pets, choose a tight weave and put the zipper on the long back edge so the cushion can be rotated and flipped.

The Maryland cushion calendar

  • March: template boat berths and measure porch benches while it's quiet.
  • Sailing season: rinse salt off cockpit cushions with fresh water after a sail.
  • July and August: stand damp porch cushions on edge for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Haul-out: bring boat cushions home, wash the covers at 86°F (30°C), dry the foam to the core.
  • Before the first freeze: porch cushions go indoors, off concrete, never sealed in plastic.
  • Weekly in the kitchen: wipe spills the same day and flip the long cushion now and then.

Measure the table before the bench. A banquette cushion should sit 10 to 12 inches below the tabletop, or dinner turns into a reach.

Buyer questions: nooks, benches and window seats

  1. A common question

For a corner bench, do you make one L-shaped cushion or two pieces?

    The workshop's answer

Two. Corner seats are made as separate cushions that meet neatly at the corner, lined up flush edge to edge. The covers are easier to take off and put back, and the fit is cleaner.

  2. A common question

Is a 3-inch cushion thick enough on a plywood kitchen nook bench?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop said 3 in (7.5 cm) is fine for sitting comfortably on a plywood nook bench.

  3. A common question

How tall will the seat plus backrest be on a bench cushion set?

    The workshop's answer

The seat is 4 in (10 cm) thick and the standard backrest 16 in (41 cm) high, so 20 in (51 cm) stacked. The backrest can be shorter, one was 15 in, and the seat depth should fit the bench: 22 in rather than 24 in to avoid a 2 in overhang.

  4. A common question

Which fabric is easiest to clean for a family eating nook?

    The workshop's answer

The soft fabric range, which is durable and easy to clean; it was suggested over velvet for children. For a light beige look, its smoke shade is a beige-gray.

  5. A common question

My wood window seat is 12 in deep. Can the cushion be 14 in deep and overhang the front by 2 in?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Up to 2 in (5 cm) of overhang is common and won't damage the cushion, because high-density foam keeps its shape. For extra support the foam can be slightly firmer, with an inner wrap to hold the front edge.

Maryland cushion questions

How thick should a Baltimore rowhouse banquette cushion be?

Usually 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) of firm foam, chosen so the cushion top sits 10 to 12 in below the tabletop. Save 4 in (10 cm) for a low bench platform, and remember back cushions take about 3 in of seat depth.

Can Chesapeake porch cushions stay out over winter?

Not on an open porch. Baltimore averages 93 days a year at or below 32°F (0°C) and about 19 in of snow. Water left in standard foam freezes and thaws, so store cushions indoors, clean, dry to the core and breathing.

What should Bay sailors know about boat cushion fabric?

Water-repellent outdoor fabric sheds spray and showers, but water still enters through needle holes and zippers, and standard foam takes 24 to 48 hours to dry. Keep cushions in a cabin or covered cockpit, and rinse salt off with fresh water.

Should a very long kitchen bench get one cushion or two?

Either can work. Single pieces well over 100 in have been made, but very long runs are sometimes split in two because two pieces are easier to handle and ship. Say which you want when you order, and give the total run.
