The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

Will I get to see my custom cushion before it's shipped?

Also asked as:Send me a picture before you ship.Take pics of the quality before you ship.

Usually, friend. Check the boat at the dock, not once she's out past the breakwater.

Blush pink and cream striped window seat cushion on honey oak with cream pillows, a fringed throw and pink peoniesSave
Soft blush stripes pick up the peonies on the sill, while honey oak paneling keeps the pink from turning sugary.

The quick answer

Usually yes: ask in messages and the workshop photographs your finished custom cushion before it goes to the courier. Custom shapes get final-check photos with measurements and wait for your approval, and shipping follows your final confirmation. On the busiest production days a photo can't be promised, so ask early.

Three photos you can ask for

  1. The fabric in hand, at the start. For a color-sensitive order, a real-life photo of the actual fabric, before anything is cut. Pair it with a fabric swatch if the color really matters.
  2. A color mock-up, after ordering. A picture of your choices together.
  3. The finished piece, before dispatch. On a custom shape such as a bay window cushion, the photos come with measurements and the order waits for your yes.

What a photo can't promise

  • A photo on every day: it depends on the production schedule. In one very busy week an order shipped without the promised picture.
  • A photo you never asked for: request it in messages, early.
  • A free pass on time: a change made after the photo adds days.
A real project

The bay cushion that went back on the table

A buyer ordered an angled bay cushion. The final-check photos came with measurements, the slanted sides at 26 3/8 in (67 cm), and the buyer approved them before it shipped.

The photo stage is also where changes still happen. One angled bay cushion in corduroy was remade so its stripes ran vertically on the edges, and that cost about 2 extra days. Better at the dock than at sea. Wale and nap direction explains why the stripes matter.

One angled bay cushion was remade after the final-check photos so its corduroy stripes ran vertically on the edges; the change cost about 2 days.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can I see my cushion before it ships?

    The workshop's answer

Sometimes. Photos of the finished piece have been shared for final approval, and color mock-ups after ordering, but a photo can't always be promised because it depends on the day's production schedule.

  2. A common question

Will you photograph my order before handing it to the courier?

    The workshop's answer

Usually, yes: a photo of the finished order is sent before it goes out. In one very busy week the photo was forgotten and the order shipped anyway.

  3. A common question

Can I see the fabric at the start and the cushions at the end?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop agreed to send a photo of the actual fabric at the start and photos of the finished pieces before dispatch.

Questions buyers ask next

How soon does a cover ship once I approve the photos?

Ask the workshop when yours will ship after the final confirmation, and keep the answer. A change asked for at the photo stage adds time; one remake took about 2 extra days.

Do the final-check photos show measurements?

For custom shapes, yes: the finished cushion is photographed with its measurements, so you can compare each edge with your drawing before approving. On one angled bay cushion the slanted sides read 26 3/8 in (67 cm).

Can I see my fabric color before the cushion is cut?

For a color-sensitive order, yes. A real-life photo of the actual fabric in hand can be sent at the start, and color mock-ups may follow after ordering.
