Outdoor cushions for New Jersey shore houses, decks and porches

Salt, sand, sun off the water and a summer of renters who never read the house notes. Build Shore cushions for the worst week in August and the rest of the season is easy.

The quick answer

Outdoor cushions in New Jersey need UV-resistant, water-repellent outdoor fabric, zip-off washable covers, no tufting, and ties or a non-slip base where the sea wind blows. At the Shore, hose off salt and sand and stand cushions on edge to drain. The foam is not quick-dry, so bring cushions in before storms and store them dry for nor'easter season.

Salt, sand and sun that bounces back

New Jersey's Atlantic coastline runs roughly 130 miles, and every mile of it is working on your outdoor cushions. Sun, salt and sand arrive together.

Start with the sun. July's noon UV index averages about 8.3 in New York City and 8.6 in Philadelphia, the two cities that bracket the state. The beach adds to it: the WHO puts sand's reflection at about 15% of UV and sea foam's at about 25%. A deck chaise gets sun from above and a little from below.

Then the water. Atlantic City averages 45.96 in of precipitation a year, with morning humidity around 80%. Rain doesn't negotiate. Neither does salt: FEMA coastal guidance finds salt spray falls off sharply within 300 to 3,000 ft of the breaking waves, but faster corrosion has been measured 5 to 10 miles inland.

Winter is real, too. Atlantic City averages about 104 nights at or below 32°F and 17.4 in of snow; Newark, 91 nights and 31.5 in. Jersey Shore cushions need a winter home as much as a summer one.

Wraparound porches, LBI decks and the summer rental

Cape May was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Its historic district covers 380 acres and more than 600 buildings, many put up after the 1878 fire destroyed about half the town. Those Victorians wear wraparound porches, and the porches wear swings and rockers. Cape May porch cushions start with porch swing cushions that tie on at the back.

Long Beach Island is about 18 miles long, home to roughly 10,000 people year-round and about 100,000 in summer. Most of those summer people sit on rental decks, on cushions they didn't buy. Design for them: plain tops, zip-off covers, colors that forgive sunscreen.

Inland the word changes. In the Middle Atlantic, 34% of new homes started in 2024 had decks, against 23% of 2025 starts with patios, so in New Jersey I say deck cushions and deck bench cushions. The state also sits in a five-way tie right behind Arizona, Delaware and Florida for chaise lounge cushion searches.

How many people sit on your deck in a July week, friend, and how many of them bring the cushions in?

No fabric is salt-proof. Rinse with fresh water after windy beach days, and prefer coated or plastic hardware on the furniture itself.

A real project

Ten covers for a tired outdoor sectional

A buyer in the US had an outdoor sectional with benches and wanted covers only, for inserts they already owned: seven at 25 x 15.5 x 4.25 in, two big ones at 76.5 x 30.5 x 5.5 in with rounded back corners, and one at 47 x 15 x 5.5 in. All piped, all zippered.

They had measured the boxed side panel seam to seam and wanted the same full, tailored look. The workshop took the 5.5 in panel as given; a full insert crowns the top, so there was no reason to enlarge the panel. Then it asked the questions that matter: how far from each corner the rounding begins, the bolster sizes, and whether the throws and bolsters needed inserts.

That's a Shore refresh done right. Covers come off and wash between guests, and foam lasts as long as you keep it dry. More on covers for foam you already have.

What it taught
Measure boxed side panels seam to seam and let a full insert crown the top; don't enlarge the panel.

Labor Day to nor'easter season: the Shore routine

  • After beach days: shake out sand, hose off salt with fresh water, stand cushions on edge to drain.
  • Before any storm: bring them in. Size pieces so one person can carry each one.
  • Between renters: unzip covers and wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle; air dry.
  • Labor Day week: rinse salt off furniture hardware and zipper teeth.
  • September on: the National Weather Service says nor'easters are most frequent and most violent from September to April. Wash, dry right through, store.
  • Storage: indoors, off concrete, where air moves. Never sealed damp in plastic.
  • Late spring: check for mildew spots before the first rental week.

Colors that survive a Shore summer

The swing in the photo wears a gray-and-white stripe, with a matching pad on the side bench. Stripes and mid-tones in gray, navy or sand hide sand and sunscreen between washes, which is why they last on a rental porch.

White is possible. All the white and off-white outdoor fabrics clean up, and a few are the workshop's picks when bleach is needed; ask before you order. Sand beige is the easy neutral for bayside decks.

On a Cape May Victorian the house already has gingerbread trim, gables and turrets. Let it talk. A plain or ticking-stripe cushion in outdoor acrylic looks right and takes the weather. For what the fabric can and can't promise, read water-repellent vs waterproof.

Build a Shore cushion for the worst week in August: salt on it, sand in it, and a renter who leaves it out in the rain.

Shore questions

  1. A common question

Can we have tufted cushions on the pool deck?

    The workshop's answer

Not outdoors. Tufting lets water into the cushion even when the fabric is outdoor-rated. A plain, foam-filled cushion in outdoor fabric is the right build outside.

  2. A common question

Which white outdoor fabrics can take bleach on a stubborn stain?

    The workshop's answer

All the white and off-white outdoor fabrics can be cleaned, but the workshop names a handful of whites as ideal for bleach cleaning. If white cushions for a rental are the plan, ask which ones before you choose.

  3. A common question

Can you use Velcro instead of ties so cushions stay put in the wind?

    The workshop's answer

Velcro isn't offered at the moment. Ties can go wherever you want them, and a non-slip bottom is the other way to stop cushions moving.

  4. A common question

Can you make cushions for a double chaise on the deck?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, both pieces to your sizes, for example a back of 51.5 x 35 in and a seat of 51.5 x 49 in. They are made in the workshop's own weather-resistant outdoor fabrics, ordered through the outdoor listing with its fabric charts.

  5. A common question

Can outdoor cushions have ties but no piping?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, in the water-resistant outdoor range. One set was a 48 x 24 x 5 in seat and a 48 x 18 x 3 in back, no piping, with ties at the two corners of the long sides. Say where you want ties and whether you want piping; both change the build.

Before you order for the Shore

When does nor'easter season start at the Jersey Shore?

The National Weather Service says nor'easters can come in any month but are most frequent and most violent between September and April, bringing heavy rain or snow, gale-force wind, rough seas and sometimes coastal flooding. Treat Labor Day as the start of cushion storage season.

How far inland does salt air reach New Jersey cushions?

Salt spray is heaviest by the breaking waves and drops sharply over the first 300 to 3,000 ft inland, but FEMA coastal guidance notes faster corrosion as far as 5 to 10 miles in. On Long Beach Island and the other barrier islands, assume every cushion needs a fresh-water rinse.

Should a New Jersey house get deck cushions or patio cushions?

Usually deck. In the Middle Atlantic census division, 34% of new homes started in 2024 had a deck, while only 23% of 2025 starts had a patio. The cushion is the same outdoor build either way; the word just helps you find it.

Do Cape May porch cushions need outdoor fabric under a deep roof?

Under a fully closed roof the workshop's regular fabrics are fine. Where wind drives rain onto the seat, choose outdoor fabric. On a wraparound porch the seats near the open ends see the most weather, so price those in outdoor cloth.

Can porch cushions stay out through a New Jersey winter?

Not if you want them next summer. Atlantic City averages about 104 nights at or below 32°F and Newark about 91. Water left in foam freezes and thaws, so bring cushions in, dry them right through and store them indoors.
