A Sage Striped Chaise Lounge Cushion on a Cape Cod Pool Deck
Striped where the house can see it, plain where people sit. The blue hydrangeas carry the loud color so the cushion does not have to.
The quick answer
On a two-fabric sunbed cushion, put the stripe on the upright backrest, where it is seen from the house, and a plain solid on the seat, which takes the wear. A sage and white awning stripe over plain sage suits a pool deck ringed with green hedges. The outdoor fabric is water resistant; store it indoors for the off-season.
Stripe up, solid down: reading the lounger
Sun low, bluestone warm underfoot, a white aluminum lounger by the pool. The sunbed cushion on it wears two fabrics: a sage and white awning stripe on the backrest, plain sage on the seat.
That split is the smartest thing in the picture. The backrest stands upright, so it is the part you see from the kitchen window. Give it the stripe. The seat is where wet swimsuits, sunscreen and sandy feet land. Give it the solid; it takes the wear.
The seat is a deep box cushion with self piping. Against a slim white frame, that crisp top edge reads like a sail folded square. No contrast cord. The stripe has plenty of white already.
Sage is the gray-green of the cedar shingles and the clipped boxwood, so the cushion settles into the yard instead of shouting over it. The blue hydrangeas in stone planters carry the strong color. The white picket fence and gate repeat the stripe's white. The pool's blue keeps the whole palette cool on a hot afternoon.
The cloth is a water-repellent outdoor membrane. It handles a summer squall and a knocked-over drink. It is not a boat hull. Rain doesn't negotiate, friend, so bring the cushions in when the season ends. Our chaise lounge cushion size Pattern covers the measuring, and water-repellent versus waterproof explains the difference in plain words.

Six camper cushions and one paper template
A buyer wrote in about a mini camper trailer with six bench cushions. The question was short: could the workshop make new custom covers for them? The workshop said yes.
Then the buyer did the thing I wish every boat and camper owner did first. They sent a template showing all six cushions, every shape and every size, and asked for a quote from that.
In a small camper, cushions are rarely the same shape twice. Measured by eye, one of six is always a little off. Traced on paper, the shapes speak for themselves, and the quote is built on what is really there. How many cushions ride in your camper, and are any two of them really alike?
Six camper cushion covers: question, choices, result
The question
Can a workshop make new covers for cushions that came with the trailer? Yes, and the quote starts from the real shapes, not from a size menu.
Choice one: template or tape measure
A traced template of each cushion beats a list of numbers, because it catches angles and cut corners a tape misses. Our Pattern on making a paper template shows how.
Choice two: covers only or the full set
Dropping the foam barely lowers the price, since the custom cover is most of the work. A full set keeps fit, texture and look matched.
Choice three: backrest sizes
A backrest can be shorter than the seat below it. Write each backrest size in the personalization notes.
The result
A quote built on six real shapes instead of six guesses. The same habit works on a pool lounger, a boat or RV cushion and a porch bench.
Buyer questions: rain, short backrests and reusing old foam
- A common question
Are your outdoor fabrics fully waterproof, or only water-repellent?
The workshop's answerWater resistant. They handle rain showers and spills well. For a long off-season, the workshop still recommends storing the cushions indoors, the same as any outdoor textile.
- A common question
For camper van bench cushions with backrests, can each backrest be shorter than its seat?
The workshop's answerYes. The bench-with-backrest option includes backrests in any size; write each one in the personalization notes. One buyer asked for a 36 1/2 in (93 cm) back on a 47 x 23 1/2 in (120 x 60 cm) seat, and a 23 in (58 cm) back on a 23 x 24 in (58 x 61 cm) seat.
- A common question
If I keep my old foam and buy only new covers, will it cost a lot less?
The workshop's answerNot much less. Most of the cost and the craft is in the custom cover, so leaving out the foam barely changes the price. The workshop recommends the full set so fit, texture and look all match.

On a two-fabric sunbed cushion, the stripe goes on the upright backrest where the house sees it, and the plain solid goes on the seat that takes the wear.

Questions buyers ask next
Which part of a two-fabric lounger cushion should get the pattern?
The upright backrest. It is the part seen from the house, and it takes less wear. Put a plain solid on the seat, where swimsuits, sunscreen and bare feet land.
Can a poolside sunbed cushion stay outside all summer long?
Through the season, yes: the fabric is water resistant and handles showers and spills. Stand it on edge after a hard rain so it drains, and store it indoors for the off-season.
How do I pick a lounger cushion color that suits my yard?
Match the solid to the foliage or siding around the pool, the way sage matches boxwood and cedar shingles here. Let flowers carry the strong color, so the cushion can stay soft and calm.
What do I send to get camper or boat cushion covers quoted?
A template of each cushion with its shape and size marked is the most reliable. Number the pieces, note the thickness, and say which backrest goes with which seat.
