Box edge, square corners: reading a teal velvet daybed cushion by the sea
A low teak platform, a deep velvet mattress, one long pillow against the wall. Hana starts with three common questions, then reads the edge.
SaveThe quick answer
A daybed cushion on a low platform reads best with a box edge and self piping, because the straight side band turns a thick mattress into one calm block of color. Knife edges suit thin pads and pillows; rounded corners suit curved frames. Inside, firm high-resilience foam wrapped in polyester wadding holds the shape and softens the surface.
Three questions, before the photograph
- A common question
What are the daybed cushions and pillows filled with?
The workshop's answerFirm high-resilience foam wrapped in polyester wadding. The foam supports and keeps its shape; the wadding gives a softer surface.
- A common question
Can I order only a simple slipcover for my IKEA Hemnes daybed?
The workshop's answerYes. Choose the Cover Only option, which gives the slipcover alone, without the backrest and armrest pieces. Write your exact dimensions and fabric code in the personalization box. IKEA Hemnes daybed covers has the details.
- A common question
Can you suggest a piping color that goes with my wallpaper?
The workshop's answerYes. Send a photo of the wallpaper. For a blue-gray paper, the workshop suggested a muted blue-gray body with warm ivory piping, or a quieter tone for a subtler edge. For a greener scheme with blue walls, it suggested green with light blue piping.
Now, the reading
Why a deep mattress wants a box edge
The mattress is deep. It sits on pale teak slats that barely rise off the terracotta tiles. Height is a feeling, and here it says: lie down.
A boxed edge gives the cushion straight sides of equal height. With self piping at top and bottom, the teal reads as one block. No bulge at the corners. No dome in the middle.
A knife edge would fail here. Two panels sewn at the rim make a pillow shape, full in the center, thin at the edge. On a mattress this deep it would look like a large pillow left on a bench. Box edge versus knife edge shows both side by side.
The color follows the view. Teal answers the sea past the olive trees. Rust and oatmeal linen pillows take the floor tiles and the limewashed plaster. Rough linen beside smooth velvet adds contrast in texture, not only in color. The long teal velvet pillow runs along the wall and does the work of a backrest.
The props keep to one side. A rattan tray gives the terracotta jug and the small glass a flat base on a soft surface. The open book says someone was here a moment ago. The brass planter with string-of-pearls hangs overhead, draws the eye up and repeats the warm metal of the tray handles. The rest of the mattress stays empty. That emptiness is the design.
On a covered loggia, velvet is fine for the warm season. In open sun or sea air, ask for the same teal in outdoor acrylic.
Box, knife, rounded, angled: four edges, four jobs
| Edge | What it looks like | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| Box edge | Straight side band, crisp corners, piping top and bottom | daybed mattresses, window seats, benches |
| Knife edge | Two panels sewn at the rim, full in the middle | throw pillows and thin chair pads |
| Rounded corners | Box edge with softened corners | curved frames and corners that legs brush past |
| Angled corners | Cut to a drawn angle | bay windows, trapezoid seats and alcoves |
Pinned by Hana: five marks in the loggia
Five pins, from the teal mattress on the slats to the brass planter hanging above it.

- Teal daybed mattress
A mattress this thick on a low platform gives proper lounging comfort, not just a seat pad.
- Tray with terracotta jug
A rattan tray gives mugs and jugs a flat base on a soft surface.
- Oatmeal linen pillow
Rough linen pillows next to smooth velvet add contrast in texture, not only color.
- Teal velvet long pillow
A long pillow in the same velvet works as a backrest along the wall.
- Hanging planter
A brass pot overhead draws the eye up and repeats the warm metal of the tray handles.

A seat that grew, and two bolsters that followed
A buyer wrote to the workshop for a daybed seat of 67 x 27 1/2 in (170 x 70 cm) with contrasting piping and two cylindrical cushions. Then the plan changed. The seat became 72 7/8 x 29 1/2 in (185 x 75 cm), with one bolster 29 1/2 in (75 cm) long for the end and one 72 7/8 in (185 cm) long for the full back.
The workshop quoted again. Bolsters are priced by length, so a longer bolster is a new number. The body was a dusty mauve velvet with cream velvet piping.
Change a size and ask for the quote again. Bolster pillows are cut to the side they support, and more mattresses like this one live under daybed cushions. Daybed mattress cover measurements lists what to send.
A size changes. A bolster follows. The quote follows the bolster.

A thick daybed cushion wants a box edge: straight side bands and self piping keep the mattress one calm block, where a knife edge would dome like a pillow.

Questions buyers ask next
When is a knife edge the better choice than a box edge?
On thin cushions and throw pillows. A knife edge joins two panels at the rim, so it is fullest in the middle and slim at the sides. That softness suits a pillow; on a thick mattress it looks unfinished and loses usable width.
Can a velvet daybed cushion live on a covered terrace?
Under a roof, for the warm season, yes. Velvet isn't made for open sun, rain or salt air. For an uncovered terrace, choose an outdoor acrylic in a similar color and keep velvet for the sheltered spots.
What length of bolster suits the end and the back of a daybed?
Match each one to the side it supports. An end bolster runs the depth of the seat and a back bolster runs the full length. In one order the seat was 72 7/8 x 29 1/2 in (185 x 75 cm), with bolsters of those two lengths.
Do rounded corners change what I send when ordering?
Yes. Give the overall length and depth as usual, then trace each corner on paper or note its radius. Rounded corners suit curved frames and spots where legs brush past; square corners suit platforms like this one.
