A mushroom velvet daybed cushion with burgundy piping, and a buyer's four-inch rim

Pale velvet, one dark line, low winter sun. And beside it, a real project in which one number, the height of a rim, changed the rest.

Burgundy piping gives a pale mushroom velvet daybed cushion a clear outline; rose and mustard pillows pick up the warmth.

The quick answer

A daybed cushion should be thicker than the frame's raised rim so it sits above the edge rather than flush with it. One buyer with a 4 in (10 cm) rim moved from a 4 in to an 8 in (20 cm) cushion, re-measured the length to 46 in (117 cm), and matched two bolsters to the 21 in (53 cm) seat depth.

Low sun, pale velvet, one dark line

Low winter sun comes through an arched window and a sheer linen curtain. It lands on an oak spindle-back daybed and a cushion the color of mushrooms.

Mushroom taupe is a practical velvet. It hides wear. It also carries a risk: in bright light, beside pale oak and pale floorboards, it can disappear. The burgundy piping answers that. One dark welt draws the outline of the box edge, and the daybed keeps its shape in the sun.

The two pillows are velvet as well, so the sheen matches across the seat. Dusty rose repeats the burgundy in a lighter voice. Mustard is the single warm spark against the taupe and oak. Both colors already live in the faded kilim below, so nothing on the daybed is a stranger to the room.

The oatmeal knit throw hangs over one end and softens the hard line where cushion meets arm. A wooden stool holds a ceramic vase of berry branches, the same red again, smaller. The abstract painting stays quiet.

The spindle back and arms stay bare. That keeps a daybed light enough for a small room. You can see through it.

If you want a neutral cushion that still looks designed, take the piping from your rug. What color runs through yours? More in the daybed cushion atlas, among living room cushions, in velvet and in brown and mushroom cushions.

Pale seat. Dark line. The rug decides.

  1. Burgundy piping

A dark welt on a pale cushion draws the outline, so the daybed doesn't look washed out in bright sun.

  2. Dusty rose pillow

Rose repeats the burgundy piping in a lighter shade.

  3. Mustard pillow

One warm yellow pillow adds sparkle against all the taupe and oak.

  4. Knit throw

The throw hangs over the end, softening the hard line where cushion meets arm.

  5. Kilim rug

The rug's rose and brick bring the piping color down to the floor.

A real project

One buyer's daybed: the question, the choices, the result

The question. A buyer in the US had a black metal daybed frame whose sides rose about 4 in (10 cm). She wanted a seat cushion and two bolsters, and asked what sizes to order.

The choices. The first quote was 52 x 21 x 4 in (132 x 53 x 10 cm). Then the rim came into it. A 4 in cushion inside a 4 in rim sits exactly flush. You sit in a tray, not on a seat. She moved to 8 in (20 cm).

Height is a feeling. Four more inches changed how the daybed would sit, and how it would look from the doorway.

She measured again and shortened the length to 46 in (117 cm). The bolsters were made 21 in (53 cm) long, the same as the seat depth. After paying, she corrected the burgundy velvet color number, and the order went ahead in the right shade.

The result. A 46 x 21 x 8 in (117 x 53 x 20 cm) seat that rises above the rim, and two bolsters that close the ends exactly. The measuring steps are in daybed mattress cover measurements.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can you make the daybed mattress cover and back cushions in queen size, or in linen?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send clear measurements of the actual mattress, ideally after the daybed has arrived and you know the mattress fits, and the workshop will make the set to them.

  2. A common question

Are the floor cushions comfortable enough to sleep on? Could two be joined into a double bed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The shop finds them very comfortable to sleep on, and they can be combined into a double or made in bed sizes. For regular sleeping it recommends the soft fabric rather than linen.

  3. A common question

Will your Hemnes daybed cover set fit an IKEA Brimnes, and how do I order the mattress cover with back cushions but no armrests?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, it fits: order and write the exact size of your mattress. For the cover plus back cushions without armrests, choose the full set option, or add the mattress cover and two backrest pillows to the cart one by one. They ship together.

If a daybed frame has a 4 in raised rim, a 4 in cushion sits flush inside it like a tray. Go thicker so the seat rises above the edge.

Questions buyers ask next

What piping color suits a mushroom or taupe velvet cushion?

A darker color already in the room. Here a burgundy welt, taken from the kilim, outlines a pale cushion so it doesn't fade into light oak and floorboards in bright sun.

How long should the bolsters on a daybed be?

Match them to the seat depth so they close the ends neatly. In one project, a 46 x 21 x 8 in (117 x 53 x 20 cm) seat got two bolsters 21 in (53 cm) long.

Why leave a spindle-back daybed without back cushions?

Bare spindles keep the daybed light and see-through, which helps in a small room. Two pillows and a throw give enough comfort for sitting without hiding the frame.

Should velvet pillows match a velvet daybed cushion?

Match the fabric, not the color. Velvet pillows share the cushion's sheen, so light moves evenly across the seat. Take their colors from the rug, like the dusty rose and mustard here.
