A stone velvet daybed cushion, taken apart layer by layer for everyday life

A low oak platform, a quiet mattress, a row of velvet pillows. Hana reads each layer for what happens to a daybed: children, animals, spills and light.

A stone-colored velvet daybed mattress is the calm base for a row of plum, rust, cream and sage velvet pillows.

The quick answer

A stone-colored velvet daybed cushion holds up in daily use because a mid-tone hides dust and light marks better than cream, and a linen throw on top meets spills first. Sheer curtains soften the sun from the window. Before ordering, measure the whole daybed deck: one request for two 18 x 32 in cushions became about 74 x 36 x 6 in.

The cushion, cut open

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 4 in (10 cm) on 17¾ in, to proportion.1. Cover fabric: A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.; 2. Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Cover fabric3Fiber wrap2Piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core2.0 lb HR foam4 in10 cm17¾ in deep · 45 cm

The anatomy, from the floor up

  1. Kilim rug. Rough and patterned, it forgives crumbs and paws at the foot of the daybed.
  2. Low oak platform with a slatted base. Height is a feeling, and this one says floor, not bed.
  3. Stone velvet mattress, box edge, self piping. It overhangs the slats slightly, so the edge you sit on is soft.
  4. Taupe velvet bolster at the open end, in the mattress color, finishing it like an arm.
  5. A row of pillows: plum in the corner, then rust, cream, oatmeal linen and one cool sage.
  6. Oatmeal linen throw. The top layer, and the first to meet a spill.

  1. Large plum pillow

The darkest pillow sits in the corner to anchor the arrangement.

  2. Rust velvet pillow

Rust sits between the plum and cream, so the colors flow along the row.

  3. Sage pillow

One cool green pillow keeps the warm row from feeling heavy.

  4. Taupe bolster

A bolster in the mattress color finishes the end like an arm.

  5. Mattress on oak platform

The mattress overhangs the slatted base slightly, which softens the edge you sit on.

The daily life test: children, animals, spills, sun

The mattress is stone greige. Quiet on purpose. The pillows do the talking, plum to rust to cream to a single sage, and because every velvet here shares a similar sheen, many colors still read as one set. Pampas grass on a wooden stool stands beside it, pale and still.

Now live on it for a year.

Children. They climb on from the front. The mattress overhangs the oak slightly, so there is no hard edge at knee height. Velvet has a pile, and it shows pressure and brushing marks before it shows wear. A hand brushes them back.

Animals. Hair shows on any velvet. A mid-tone like stone hides it better than cream, and the linen throw is where a pet will choose to lie anyway. The pet-friendly fabric Pattern compares the options.

Spills. The throw meets them first, and a throw is easy to wash. For the velvet underneath, blot rather than rub. The velvet care Pattern has the rest.

Sun. An arched window sits beside the daybed, and sheer linen curtains soften it. Fading shows most on saturated colors, so the plum and rust pillows are the ones to rotate along the row. The stone base hides change longest.

What sits on your daybed most: people, a dog, or the afternoon sun?

A quiet base. A loud row. A throw that takes the day.

A real project

Two small cushions that turned out to be a whole deck

A buyer in the US was replacing worn daybed cushions and wanted firm seating. The first request was two cushions of 18 x 32 in (46 x 81 cm). Then the buyer measured the whole daybed and found it needed about 74 x 36 x 6 in (188 x 91 x 15 cm) in total.

That is roughly four times the area. One large cushion was quoted. The order settled as two 36.5 x 36.5 x 6 in (93 x 93 x 15 cm) velvet cushions. After seeing a finished-product photo of color 12, the buyer switched to velvet 14 before production.

Measure the deck before you ask the price. The daybed mattress cover Pattern shows where to put the tape, and more sets are under daybed cushions.

Buyer questions: a toddler loveseat, a daybed without arms, a mattress question

  1. A common question

Can you make a seat, back cushions and side bolsters to turn a toddler floor bed into a little loveseat?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. For a 53.5 x 29.5 in (136 x 75 cm) platform, both a five-piece set (seat, two back cushions, two side bolsters) and a two-piece set (seat plus one long back bolster) fit comfortably. The five-piece set costs more but looks fuller. Only the cushion measurements are needed, not the frame height.

  2. A common question

My daybed has no arms. Can I order the slipcover with backrests only?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The slipcover can be ordered with backrests and without armrests; the shop switched that option on in the listing for the buyer.

  3. A common question

Does the daybed cover set include the mattress? How tall and firm is it?

    The workshop's answer

No. The set is the mattress cover, two backrests and two armrests. The shop can supply a mattress at extra cost, and points buyers to IKEA's mattresses for sizes and materials.

Measure the whole daybed deck before asking for a quote. Two 18 x 32 in cushions became about 74 x 36 x 6 in, four times the area.

Questions buyers ask next

How does a velvet daybed cushion hold up with young children?

Well, if you expect the pile to move. Velvet shows pressure and brushing marks before it shows wear, and a hand brushes them back. A mattress that overhangs its base a little gives small climbers a soft edge.

Will a velvet daybed fade beside a sunny window?

Any color changes after long direct sun. Sheer curtains slow it, and a mid-tone base like stone shows change less than saturated pillows. Rotate the plum and rust pillows along the row now and then.

Why match the bolster to the mattress instead of the pillows?

A bolster in the mattress color reads as part of the daybed, like an arm, rather than one more pillow. It finishes the open end without adding a new color to a row that already has five.
