A mustard bouclé daybed cushion that makes a small room feel wider
Hana reads a walnut mid-century daybed with an unpiped mustard mattress and three pillows, and finds the small-space decisions hiding in plain sight.
The quick answer
A daybed cushion for a small living room should be cut deep enough to lie on, left unpiped with soft edges, and backed by pillows that step from dark to light so the daybed reads as a sofa by day. Let the lamp arc in from one spot and keep the table on slim legs, and the floor stays open.
One loud color, then nothing loud
A daybed is two pieces of furniture in the footprint of one. In a small room, that is the whole point.
This one is walnut, mid-century, low. The mattress is mustard bouclé, cut deep enough to lie on. It has no piping. The edges round off softly, and that softness matters against a hard wooden frame. A piped edge would draw a line. Here the eye slides past.
Behind it, three pillows. Charcoal bouclé sits furthest back and anchors the row. A black-and-gray graphic weave in the middle links the two ends. A cream bouclé lumbar finishes it. Dark to light. The mustard glows because nothing else competes.
The black drum-shade arc lamp is the quiet small-space move. It reaches over the daybed from one point on the floor, so there is no side table and no second lamp. Its black shade and brass arm repeat the dark pillows and the brass-legged table.
The walnut coffee table stands on thin brass legs. You can see floor beneath it. The cream fringed wool rug grounds everything without adding weight. One white ceramic bowl. Nothing more.
Leave a hand's width of floor between the daybed and the table, and the gap reads as space rather than leftover. The daybed cushion atlas covers sizes, and the bouclé shelf shows the loops up close. How wide is the gap in front of your sofa now?
One color, spoken once. Everything else, quiet. The floor, left open.

The pins move from the mustard mattress to the three pillows, dark to light, and up to the arc lamp that frees the floor.

Four ways this corner gives floor back
- An arc lamp from one point on the floor replaces a side table and a table lamp.
- A coffee table on slim legs shows the floor beneath it, so the room reads larger.
- Pillows stand in for a sofa back, so the daybed seats guests by day and sleeps one at night.
- One mattress color and three neutral pillows give the eye one place to rest.
Two cushions of 18 x 32 in, and a deck of 74 x 36
A buyer in the US was replacing worn daybed cushions and wanted firm seating. The first request was two cushions of 18 x 32 in (46 x 81 cm). Then they measured the whole deck. It needed about 74 x 36 x 6 in (188 x 91 x 15 cm) in total.
One 18 x 32 in cushion covers 576 square inches. The deck covers 2,664. A small quote had been hiding a surface more than four times its size.
The shop quoted one large cushion first. The order settled as two velvet cushions of 36.5 x 36.5 x 6 in (93 x 93 x 15 cm), which came in lower. After seeing a photo of a finished cushion in color 12, the buyer switched to velvet 14 before production began.
Measure the deck first. Then decide how many pieces. The daybed measuring pattern shows where to put the tape.
Small-room questions
- A common question
Which size should I order for a cushion on top of a four-cube IKEA Kallax?
The workshop's answerThe top of a 4-cube Kallax is about 15 x 57 in (39 x 146.5 cm). Choose the 16 x 59 in option and the shop makes it to the exact Kallax size.
- A common question
How big are the back cushions in the daybed set, and could I have four backrests at 20 x 31.5 in (50 x 80 cm)?
The workshop's answerThe set's backrests are about 16 x 39 in (40 x 100 cm), but they are made to the measurements you send. Four backrests at 20 x 31.5 in were quoted together, below their list price.
- A common question
How long does a daybed set take to make and deliver, and is shipping extra?
The workshop's answerFor one buyer the whole thing took 1 to 2 weeks, production included, and shipping was free. Ask for your own quote to state shipping and timing in writing.

Questions buyers ask next
Should a daybed mattress cushion be piped or left plain?
Either works, but they read differently. On this walnut daybed the mustard bouclé is left unpiped, so the edges round off softly against the hard frame. Piping sharpens an edge and draws a line. In a small, calm room, a soft edge lets the eye pass over.
How do you make a daybed read as a sofa during the day?
Give it a back. Here three pillows step from charcoal to a graphic weave to a cream lumbar, which gives the daybed a back and a finished front. Separate back cushions sized to the frame do the same job more firmly.
What colors sit well with a mustard bouclé daybed?
Black, gray and cream. A charcoal pillow anchors the back, a black-and-gray weave links the row, and a cream lumbar lets the mustard glow. Walnut and brass repeat the warmth without adding a second strong color.
